Also wanted to add, video games were also targeted towards children back then and not adults/manchildren like now. So being goofy in this sense wasn't really weird.

Woolsey didn't work on the translation of this game.

      >be kid and read this
      >"what an odd thing to say"
      >find out later it was a translation error
      >"haha that's funny"
      (several autism cycles later)
      >"grrr too many people keep mentioning it! therefore it was N E V E R F U N N Y"

It's not a translation error really; just a very peculiar choice and actually inappropriate to the situation since the character at that point fully believes the Bard in question held no real feelings for the girl.

Ah my bad, could have sworn he did. But I looked it up and you're right, weird. Not sure why I thought he did I specifically remember him being the reason for this line for years for some reason.

Me too. I think it just gets mixed up with all the other retro FF talk and translation autism over the years.

I think he did great with the time constraints and material he had.

I kind of like how they worked in senility as an actual gameplay element. That said, the character is like only 60, which kind of reflects Square's warped notions of biological age.

      I liked it too
He wasn't really senile, his memory sucked a bit but I got the impression it was mostly because he hadn't been actively maging for a some time
Plus 60 might be quite old in the setting, they have cure spells and stuff but we don't know how advanced their medicine is

I can't play old jrpgs because every character is 15 and 30 year olds are ineffective townspeople. even the big bad villain is like 21 at most. i want to play as old fricks and ancient wizards and fat middle aged people and monsters (not a furry), because their stories are more interesting by far. youth saves world is a great story, but after the hundredth time and after having already chosen my personal favorite telling of it, i'm craving something different.

The humor came from it being the final big "expletive" that Tellah could muster. It's like the equivalent of going on an emotional abusive rant and then ending with "poopy-head" or "puppy-kicker" or something. Every single rerelease missed the point by moving the line to the beginning of the scene so it's out of sequence.

Basically this and it being a goofy sounding word that nobody uses. The meaning fits though.

fits perfect with that archaic noun definition for sure.

When I was a kid I laughed at this line for one additional reason: I didn't know the word "spoony", so it seemed like a silly-looking nonsense-word and its absurdity really tickled me. It may have fallen into the "fascinatingly crazy Japanese stuff" category in my mind. I doubt that I'm the only player who laughed for that reason.

Nothing. The entire game is a bad translation, so this wasn't anything special.
