Their ability to make polished games where every aspect felt like they had put 10/10 effort into everything was unmatched anywhere else in the vidya industry. We're not 20 years later and still no company has come close to the golden age of Blizzard.

WoW Vanilla through WotLK was "paywalled and more than Runescape". It wasn't full normie-tier until Cata, and then after that it turned to a normie game that sold itself for hardcore gamers. There's a reason the WoW population peaked at WotLK.

They made games which were enjoyable. That is literally all what matters. The cherry on the top was you could interact with others in a fantasy world, as it was a super roided chatroom essentially. It didn't matter if you were hardcoar or not, you played WoW because it was good. It didn't matter what kind of games you were into you either, could find joy in these titles. They never felt like casual shit either it was the "go to" game, also . The priority was you being immersed in the world and having fun. No one gave a fuck about warrior BiS and cloth paladins or 1 button warlocks. This was all player mental illness who were under-achievers IRL and never could move on.

Then came this weird 2007-ish era where the game took a full turn. Most people will blame activision but the roots were far deeper than that. See

And guess who also came from Everquest

. In many dev talk stuff you can notice that the things what people cherish so much are all connected towards the people who somehow "disappeared" during TBC, or were gradually pushed back. Coincidentally by a small hat. There is a very noticeable tone shift between TBC and Vanilla, with completely different mindsets, as even Metzen's stuff took a nosedive. Then came this hardcore wikifag era and from asking some other player "how do I do this XY quest" the game became a "look it up on wiki" shit. This ofc was topped with group finder, bad raids, story, classes being indistinguishable from each other. Cataclysm came out and it was clear: the magic is gone. The only impressive shit was the first fully underwater zone, but even that exhausted itself quickly.

Now the playerbase is filled with minmax autists and the devs are LGTVHDMIs. Everythign what could go wrong did go wrong.

Runescape was the baby MMO, if you were coming off EverQuest. WoW was the game all the EverQuest fags were gushing about while they waited on it to drop. Before WoW, there were only games like Anarchy Online, and Star Wars Galaxies. WoW was very much an anticipated game after it was announced.

I bought like 5 of their games in the late 90s. The level of compatibility and polish was unheard of. "Buy this mmo now and it's free for life with no microtransactions" has been done by like 4 games in history, and none of the others are very good.

blizzard made one good game which was warcraft 2
then they bought (condor? concord?) renaming it blizzard north, and they made one good game which was diablo 1
millennials watched their older brother play these games, and then got into the sequels (which outsold the previous games, meaning most of them were newfags). and they just kept eating the slop because they didn't know any better. case in point:

lan, direct tcp/ip, free central server, and player-owned servers were standard features of the time. most didn't even require an account, just a cd-key (which were trivial to share, or pirate). you could also make a one-time payment for third-party lan emulators which let you treat any game as one with a centralized online community. blizzard was probably the first big dev to start taking options away with battle.net.

The games were extremely polished, only Nintendo and Square could compete. After they were bought by Activision, though, it started to lose its shine, with D3 and SC2, for example. SC2 was still good, but had a lot of problems, specially because it forced the e-sports meme, which made the game worse.

Their games were extremely high quality, Blizzard was considered THE best vidya company by many. Their reputation was what From Software is now I'd say.
They were also one of very few developers who cared about their games lasting a very very time. Always putting effort into end game and multiplayer. The value you'd get with a blizzard game compared to anything was insane.

WoW was a crazy successful game on release. I would walk through corporate banks in Sydney and you'd have countless girls and guys talking about their adventures when I had my first job.
Before that the competitive RTS scene was very likely thanks to Warcraft 3, and Starcraft was so popular from korea we'd be watching international games for the first time just getting absorbed in the hype of a genuine competitive scene. Early Blizzard did so much good even though they butchered the lore straight out of 40k, they made their story original enough and more importantly implemented it very well into a digital form.
I loved gaming from 1995 to 2010s, tonnes of innovation with the transition from 2D to 3D. Powerful modding scenes, Blizzard really were the good guys back then, tonnes of different custom maps, earliest iterations of DOTA and Tides of Blood. It's funny how the RTS genre completely died, partly westwoods fault, partly the entire focus of developers copying WoW and trying to make MMOs a successful cash machine.

Warcraft II was good, it was easy to get into and had a lot of replayability, especially with the level editor.
Diablo I and II were both good, and had great atmosphere and feel.
Starcraft Brood War is one of the best RTS games ever made, trying to figure out how to beat each level with friends was great fun, even before we dared try Battle.net.
These were the games people were talking about at the time. Everyone was playing them. There were others of course, but no other developer was as consistently excellent at the time.
As for "hardcore gamers", that didn't really exist at the time in the way we think of it today. There wasn't much more hardcore than "plays a multiplayer game on PC".

After that? Warcraft III was too high fantasy for my liking. WoW was interesting but I found it too time consuming. I won't speak of what came after that.

The main appeal was that it was basically a imchat surrounded by a fantasy game. All the nostalgia is because if that fact, you were made to be social in most situations if you wanted to clear dungeons or raids you had to talk and communicate.
You won't find something that van give you that feeling again because there's ways to get around being social if you choose to. The games dead and blizzard will just keep milking the player base until they can't do it anymore.

1996 to 2004 had one of the best streaks of any dev.
Diablo 1 and 2. Warcraft 3, Starcraft and World of Warcraft are legendary titles.

They had a big talent drain late during WoW's development and shortly after, on top of losing Blizzard North in 2003. WoW's profits also made them become more corporate and caught the eyes of Kotick who pushed Vivendi for a merger so he could get his hands on Blizzard.

Way to show off your underage. You have 1000s of games now to compare to what games were back then. Blizzard basically help pave the way to what games are now with the games they made up to WoW Vanilla. There weren't many games to compare to or were inspired from during that generation, so any game that was really good, literally left a footprint in history.

Ever wonder why there's loot itemisation and level grinding in games? All Diablo.
Why every MMO tries to capture WoW Vanilla? All WoW.
Why RTSes tried to incorporate hero type units? All Warcraft.
Why e-sports gets pushed so hard? All Starcraft.

    Blizzard was always slop.

World of Warcraft took the MMO genre and dumbed it down so everyone could feel like a hero, while also removing the social focus of games like Everquest. Blizzard literally hired EQ guild members and told them to make EQ for toddlers.

Starcraft revolves around the autistic management of limited unit groups and Blizzards awful pathfinding because it has no gameplay. Compare that slop to Total Annihilation, which had bullet simulation and real pathfinding and came out in 1997.

Diablo was always a slot machine. It's a game for gambling addicts wrapped in a very basic RPG façade. They're still chasing that high to this day.

Warcraft 3 even at release was accused of being a simplified Starcraft and the artstyle was hated on right out the gate. Can't deny the story was very good for its time.

Honestly? They were just okay back in the day, but the market wasn't as saturated as it is today with okay developers so by virtue of scarcity they became gods of the nerds. Add to that that, again, in this only just developing industry, everybody was just experimenting and trying shit out to see what worked, they were sneaky bitches and took *other* people's ideas and added that "Blizzard Polish" - Which means that they made use of hindsight and trimmed all the unnecessary fat and fixed the big and small logical fallacies and shipped an overall enjoyable experience. When other RTS games sent you to go and collect 6 different resources, in Warcraft 2 you collected 3 and one was optional depending on the map and your build order. When other RPGs made you jump through hoops, Diablo told you to go "CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK" and watch the pretty lights go off. When MMOs made you want to have a nice day because your chara just got murked by a bandit and you lost EXP and equipment, Worlo just said "pull yourself up, champ!" and gave you a playful nudge to the chin and let you run back to your corpse. They were the ones taking the unfathomably complex and unfair development ideas and casualised them, which in that perspective made them actually playable.
Their recipe for success is now their downfall because other companies have longsince copied *their* recipe for success and have focused on trim, sleek and "polished" experiences so that they are almost incestuous. They are copying already very simple formulas and try to simplify them, which doesn't work, so they end up trying to experiment which they were never good at and thusly are now in that uncomfortable space where they twist and turn knobs to justify their job but nothing really comes from it. Also, previously they were incredibly lenient with money.

    >games had decent art style
    >game was simple enough to just hop in and play
    >game had enough depth that nerds could dig their teeth into it and really kick ass
that last point is important. Blizzard games were seen as simple to play and hard to master. Starcraft still has people playing today and pro gamers are playing a tournament tonight even, despite it being a 20+ year old game. Dragging in all the normies with smooth and simple gameplay then making the games have enough depth that tryhard gamers could push things to the limits was apowerful combo.

    Sincere answer?

They were cutting edge and fun. While not perfect, each of their products came with a near guarantee of a certain quality. And it was like that for a long time. Just consistent.

It was rare they made a misstep. WoW for example had 2 expansions that seemed to only grow and grow. StarCraft 2 only had minor gripes. They tried new games like hearthstone and hots that were at least competitive and didn’t feel phoned in with their competition.

It went totally down hill. People left/got me top’s and those that stayed were just lower quality staff. garden gnomeey kotick wanted more schekels at any cost to the consumer. Each new product just lost more of the quality. They stopped trying so hard on each and cut more and more off each new release. They added more industry practices(cosmetics spam over quality gameplay additions) like real money auction house.

They went from “we make good games” to “we make EA games”
