What was the point of PLA?

Seriously. It sold over 12m units in 3 months, on par with some of the best sales for a Pokemon game despite a steeper price and the switch not being nearly as popular as the gameboy/DS/3DS/etc.

12m units sold on what was essentially a proof of concept tech demo. Why not implement some of the style and approach for the main games in the future? Why not build on what you've done? It feels like they just sold millions of people a tech demo, made bank, refused to elaborate or develop it further and then buried it away to go right back to the same stale formula that they've clearly run out of ideas for.

PLA was built using alpha SS assets and abandoned concepts. It's an asset flip.

Because usually Pokemon games are developed concurrently so by the time they understand how these things work they've already finished the other game, which leads to features being missing.

I liked it, but you can tell how fricking fast they moved on by the amount of mystery gifts and codes.

Also the Paywall of Swsh and BDSP for the Darkrai and Shaymin quests are EA-tier level.

Pokemon games have been EA and Nexon tier in terms of israeliteery, paywalls and microtransactions ever since U S/M. It's really sad to watch them stop giving a frick.

Back in my day we thought getting bonuses for having other game saves was cool.

The problem is that you cannot have all Pokémon without the paywall. I legit considered grabbing the gen 8 games just so I could have Darkrai and Shaymin, but I had to stop myself on that. Why buy shit games, just to have two extra contents? Nah man. I can do better.

You can, though. Complete dex doesn't include Shaymin or Darkrai, in the same way a complete Gen III National dex didn't include Mew, Ho-Oh, Lugia, Celebi, Jirachi or Deoxys. But you'd better fricking have Leaf Green because otherwise you ain't getting Slowpoke.

              >The problem is that you cannot have all Pokémon without the paywall.
You have this thing called the internet where you can ask people to do this thing called "Touch trading." It's when they trade a Pokemon to you and then you trade it back so you'll have all the data.

not exactly a new or rare thing, though a bit disappointing when the game required is completely different gameplay wise and there is no way to get the extra content without it

Nah. This was best distribution of mythicals.

I kind of hope they keep doing this with Mythicals, they did rare distributions that were "infinite" before like Jirachi/Celebi in the US/JP Colosseum bonus disc (and Jirachi being on Pokemon Channel in Europe), Mew technically being in Ranch (if you want to catch 999 Pokemon first) and Manaphy in Ranger if you know how to factory reset your cartridge and are fine with replaying the entire game again but both BDSP and PLA giving them to you just for having other games in the series is really, really cool for keeping them permanently available.

Fun. Just being a fun JRPG . That's all it was and all it had to be, a 70 hour romp through Hisui filled with some run references and the odd sprinkling of interesting lore.
Personally I'm not the hard-core fan I was 10 years ago. I don't want to grind and play online, don't care about competitive and couldn't give less of a shit about rankings or leaderboard. When I watched the anime back in the 90s and played Red for the first time all I cared about was just having a fun adventure with bros and filling my dex. And that's what PLA gave me. No gimmicks, no super saiyans, just story, battles, surprisingly challenging AI at points and expanded on some of my favourite lore in the series. Also height differences and Alphas are soulful as frick and should be standard going forward.
It was always going to be one of the nicher titles in the series from the moment it didn't have a focus on multiplayer or having the 8 gym structure but I've got more respect for it for pulling a Genius Sonority and doing something else.

      >I don't want to grind and play online, don't care about competitive and couldn't give less of a shit about rankings or leaderboard.
This is me. And I found PLA surprisingly fun. I'm getting close to 80hrs of gameplay and just completing the path of solitude quests before training for battle reverie. I really hope they pull something similar in the future, and I'm really hoping, regardless how unlikely it is, that SV will have a decent single player focus much like PLA. Otherwise it's going to be a shit game all over again.

This. I don't really give a shit about fighting hacked mons or getting positions in hacked leaderboards that mean nothing.

I really want more DLC for PLA! It was surprisingly good. I'll never forget when that rom of the game leaked before release. I waited an hour expecting to hear people screeching about how shit the game was and instead they were like "actually I'm legit having fun"

I'm kind of pissed they moved on from this game so fast, and that they didn't do more tie-ins with the anime. not to mention a tie-in with BDSP about the end-game boss would have been sick as frick. Not only did they seem to just move on, they fricked up the English release of their anime special and it's 8 months behind the game's release

I have no idea what their plan was because this game is fun, makes experimenting with new mons and teams awesome, and could really support another narrative chapter and a high-level postgame area. Kind of sad they seem to be skipping that in favor of ...terrastalization?

Why does there need to be a point? Is every game just a means to and end for you? A stepping stone to the next game? What the frick is up with some fans of this franchise thinking about the next game the second a new game comes out? It's always endless b***hing and whining about how a gimmick won't be in the next game or that the next game will remove a certain feature. Are you really that indoctrinated?

It only came out 8 months ago, what did you expect? It was fricking boring so I hope they don't go back to it but acting like they've completely abandoned it is silly.

    >Why not implement some of the style and approach for the main games in the future?
Why are you assuming they won't? Did you think that they were going to completely rebuild SV from the ground up in the last few months of development?

  14. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Because it's one of the beta tests for Gen 10, the other being Scarlet and Violet.
Once sales sort out with SV, they'll decide what to bring over from both projects into Gen 10, but at the same time also have another project concurrently developed with Gen 10 that invariably has mechanics, features or ideas that SHOULD be in Gen 10, but won't be as they wish to avoid homogenizing differing products.

As usual, Game Freak was doing a shit test to see how little effort they could get away with before you stop buying it anyway. So they made a game where pic related constitutes the "gameplay," there's only one town and 90% of the game consists of empty grass fields.
Also as usual, you all failed the shit test.

The only thing they "experimented" with is new levels of laziness and repetition.

Someone like you would get 60 hours out of staring at a black screen as long as Charizard was on the box.
