That's definitely not true. I've never been all that great at Heroes (I still net consistent A ranks) but its literally no different than any other Sonic game just replay it enough and learn where enemies are, when to reserve your team blast, and where to take the quickest shortcuts.

SA2 was a good game that aged poorly.

Heroes was always a mediocre game with insane padding just to unlock the final scenario.

SA2 took the franchise to a point where most franchises would end, dark story with highest stakes and all the gameplay styles, and the results after have been desperately trying to scramble cohesion ever since

      Anonymous

My idea for SA3 was always a amalgamation of say 6/7 different game styles and maybe some overarching plot, etc. The problem with continuing SA2 is indeed the story (or continuing the Shadow game for that matter), but they could just make it another alternate timeline thingy and no one would care.

Another good (great) approach is just start treating Sonic properly as the many multiverse Sonics he is, and make a fun game out of them kinda mimicking some Spiderman humor or shenanigans in the way. The different playstyles/gameplays is a nice idea for someone like myself that has a pretty varied taste in games though. Imagine some self-contained 3D platformers Adventure levels for one Sonic, then Classic 2D for another Sonic or a random character, throw in bizarre shit like stealth gameplay as Chaotix or Scorpio and a Great Cave Offensive-like gem-hunt for Rouge. Maybe Space Harrier inspired shit for Tails/Tornado or Outrun for Metal.

Then we would finally have a Sonic game for NO ONE BUT ME!

Shadow the Hedgehog. It was aggresively stupid and aggresively mediocre. The low points are really bad, while the high points aren't anything above 7/10

Shadow the Hedgehog is such an interesting game because it SHOULD be the Sonic game that most people should enjoy. The gameplay is exclusively SA2 Sonic/Shadow style which were the only parts of SA2 people actually liked.

The gunplay isn't even that bad but it was unnecessary

The problem is Shadow's objectives being a bad retread of Team Chaotix missions in Sonic Heroes, so if you didn't want to be stuck basically going down the neutral 6 missions only you had to do some of that shit, it sucked, and all the backtracking to look for the needle in the haystack was extremely not fun.

        >The gameplay is exclusively SA2 Sonic/Shadow style which were the only parts of SA2 people actually liked.
Except the fact Heroes onward was the point physics was removed in favor of the binary movement style we are still plagued with today with Frontiers.

I actually made a epiphany and realized Lost WOrld and Shadow being my least favorite Sonic games in the entire series wasn't a coincidence, both have the near exact issues between them just from two extremely opposite sides of the spectrum in its presentations that would make people not see the comparisons so easily.

        >I hate the plot, both are ass moronic no matter how you look at them
        >The gameplay is literally inferior versions of better games
        >Both games are the only Sonic games ever I never completed
        >The presentation is basically the extreme of "not what I want" as it bastardizes the appeal of Sonic games between their tones.
        >The characters not only talk all the fricking time, but 99% of the characters I have to put up with I don't fricking like/unlikable by characterization alone
        >The only characters I do like (Maria/Zazz) are accompanied with the worse stages in the entire game)
        >The entire game "looks" the most polished out of any modern Sonic game but the entire concept is the most flawed out of any platformer ever conceived, even making Bubsy look more consistent and focused.

It's kinda amazing Sonic Team is so shit they can basically remake the same game just from two vastly looking extremes in tone but both be near identically flawed and moronic.

Gameplay-wise, StH had a lot of improvements over heroes: Rail switching, better lock-in, better homing attacks, less glitchy auto segments (loops, etc.). Of course it's not without its flaws (e.g. the blimp level that makes aiming a nightmare, beating levels like The Doom without the heal gun being a slog, the egregious amounts of padding forcing you to play the same levels at least 3 times (+1 for hard mode)).

        Anonymous

The slipperiness as a result of the increased acceleration from Heroes is retained, with none of the level design surrounding it that Heroes had. The guns are unsatisfying as hell to use when you manage to get them to hit, but they’re still your only viable method of attack. The homing attack barely works in comparison to the one in its predecessor, as it’s weak as hell, has sent me falling through the floor on numerous occasions, and has no way to make it stronger. The spin dash builds up barely any speed and doesn’t have much use throughout the game. Melee attacks aren't worth a mention.

          Anonymous

You're supposed to use the guns, duh. It does suck when you're dealing with big enemies, and you're reduced to jumping on them (1 hit while rising, 1 while falling).

            Anonymous

            >You're supposed to use the guns, duh.
No, they treat them like opional shit and if tey watned DMC, remove everything about Sonic from the game and force the games as 24/7 gameplay style. You can't get people invested in a forced gimmick if the gimmick alone was the very thing that made people that the game was a April Fools gun. THEN have the gall to show just how embaressed you are about the concept to make Shadow play like a different game entirely with guns and vechicles thrown in as extras

The game is shit, the focus is clearly all over the fricking place. Even fricking Frontiers is more focus than this trope, as they actively rewrote how Sonic moved from Forces into something more designed for the BotW open field.

    >b-but rail gri-
Letting you spam the B button on rails to keep performing tricks infinitely with no speed cap or punishment attached is not a good thing. It's braindead. It's dumbed down from its predecessors. In the whole 2 out of 23 levels you can switch rails in, the scenarios in which this is possible are less interesting than any rail segment in Forces.

Heroes was the start of a trend to change the tone of the series from SEGA-brand weirdness to a more Nintendoified vision of what a children's game should be. It was the first Sonic game to have less soul than a prior game in order to seek a wider audience.

Heroes was more of a flat 5/10 but it showed signs of the franchise's identity crisis. Weird mix of classic and Adventure elements without fully embracing either. The tone is all over the place, it's got the happy-go-lucky basic story at first and then turns into SA's melodrama later on as they fight a giant anime monster.

Simplifying rail grinding also ruined it going forward. In SA2 it's a pretty risky move just like in real life. From Heroes onward it became far too automated with some parts just becoming Temple Run.

Oh I meant more getting on the rail itself, there would be rails on the edges of Metal Harbor and Green Forest for example. You can learn them with time but they didn't feel like automated sections of the levels, more like dangerous options for style points.

For rail switching, I finally figured out a good method this year, which is to quickly shunt the stick from neutral to left/right at the exact same time you jump.

Personally I'd say SA2 since for me that's the moment the series decided to get rid of any semblance of identity it once had. SA1 also did this but I think to a lesser extent. Heroes I'd argue was actually an attempt to return to form with a very classic feel to the whole thing but the game is poorly designed and they probably overextended with their first multiport title.
But I think Shadow and 06 was the one two punch the series never really recovered from.

Heroes is so frustrating, the foundation for a great Sonic game is there, all it needed is a few small tweaks but it's like they didn't even playtest it and pushed an alpha prototype with a thin coat of polish to make it look presentable.

I played the GC version recently and I still had plenty of bullshit deaths due to buggy physics and automatic sections glitching out or sending me toward bottomless pits. The bonus stages are completely broken too, the top part of the pipe doesn't work at all and even if you stay in the half pipe the game can randomly decide to spazz out and kill your momentum making the Emerald hunt a crapshoot. This should not have been a requirement for the final boss, not with the state it was released in.

Heroes is probably the closest the 3D games have been to the classic design. Art direction is 100% Sonic, music is funky, story is simple and straightforward, levels have the occasional lower level/easier/less rewards vs higher level/harder/more rewards. The gameplay sucks though and the 4 different campaigns just frick it further.

I know it still technically has gameplay variety in the forms of switching characters on the fly, but I don’t enjoy Heroes much because SA2 had much more variety with the types of levels, like treasure hunting and speed levels are way different, makes it more unique in that sense. plus I’ve always been put off by the heroes/shadow models, they’re way too shiny

I think the mech missions at least made more sense in SA1 since it was a twist with the timer counting down, although it's so easy to get more time that it never comes into play.

As a kid, Heroes was the first time I thought a Sonic game was just okay instead of thinking it was the best thing ever. And Shadow the Hedgehog was the first time I was actively pissed off at a Sonic game and hated it. Heroes at least didn't make me angry while playing it.

    Shadow
Heroes was mediocre but Shadow was the first truly awful game
people excused it because it was a spin off but what followed was 06….

06 was an improvement over Shadow. Better level design, bosses, controls, soundtrack, aesthetics, textures, gameplay variety, characterization and story (if only because it has a story, and because it has some heart)

Shadow the Hedgehog is what soured the franchise on the eyes of gaming journalists. It's an incredibly dislikeable and ugly looking game

There is only one good Sonic game, Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

The first Sonic had shit level design, it's unbelieavable how many levels had parts where you had to completely halt and partake in clunky platforming.

Sonic and knuckles had levels that were too big and a shit soundtrack.

Sonic CD suffered from an extremely shitty soundtrack and bizarre level design which mixed it up too much and couldn't find a consistent flow to enjoy.

The Sonic Adventure games are clunky 3d garbage that only low iq individuals enjoy, it is impossible to witness a playthrough of that game without it sperging out.

Sonic Heroes is boring as frick with shit action constantly interrupting the flow of the mediocre platforming

Shadow the Hedgehog is like Sonic Heroes but worse

Sonic 06 has nothing left to be said about it

Sonic Unleashed introduces the boost mechanic, which is dumb fun but doesn't really do much for fun platforming and is more reaction based, but even this mechanic isn't allowed to be enjoyed for what it is due to the were-hedgehog bullshit.

Sonic Colors is held back by pretty mediocre level design, cringey cutscenes, and an unfun power up gimmick

Sonic Generations is close to being a good Sonic game, but the boost mechanic is still just not enough to carry a game and the classic sections are for some reason inspired by the shit level design of the first sonic game rather than the second one

Sonic Lost World is a worse Mario Galaxy in every sense of the word

Sonic Boom is a boring, buggy, beat em up mess, debatably not even a real sonic game

Sonic Mania is inspired by Sonic and Knuckles and Sonic CD and winds up being shit for it

Sonic Forces is a worse Sonic Generations

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the only game which fines the perfect balance between Sonic's speed, level design, and music. It's a masterpiece of a game and it's a shame they somehow never once recaptured its magic.

I like Sonic 2 as well but your whole argument about how level designs in the other games are slow or too long gets completely shattered when this zone gets brought up.

      >No way to become super sonic at will it just automatic
      >Some of the most forgettable Zones ever like Hill top.
      >Started the half pipe special stage trend that would plague the series for years.
      >2 act zones
Sonic 2 is the worst of the Classic and this is a fact.

        >2 act zones
What's wrong with this? I'd rather get 9 2-Act Zones than 6 3-Act Zones. It leads to more level variety.

Why yes, I want flat fricking levels like it's Mario or some shit just so I can literally hold right 2 win. Frick yourself

The fact you even said you liked boostshit proves it. Sanic is not about speed, it's about exploration of momentum and getting good at it.

a lot of the negative reviews that 06 got back in the day were reviews of the PS3 version, which is garbage. I only take the reviews of the superior 360 version seriously, cause it's literally impossible to enjoy 06 on PS3

      Anonymous

PS3 version of 06 has loading times that are 12 seconds longer, downgraded visuals, worse draw distance and a horrible framerate. 360 version stays at 60fps most of the time, with only a few brief chugs, but PS3 version chugs constantly and for lengthy periods of time.

Neither. It started with Shadow the Hedgehog, and fully went down the shitter with Sonic 06.

I know /sthg/gays and 19-year olds on Youtube love their chuuni shit, but SA2 really is where Sonic jumped the shark in terms of its tone/writing. Heroes dialed that back to a more simplistic cartoon plot, but the gameplay was so mediocre that it was the first mainline title to get a really mixed reception. Then Ow the Edge was a combination of a laughable story with awful gameplay, and the series never really recovered, with 06 doubling down on the self-aggrandizing plot and shit gameplay, though imo 06 still isn't as bad as ShTH.

Sega merged with Sammy in october 2004, but the announcement was done in may. Shadow the Hedgehog probably started production after this announcement. Clearly a game that reeks of executive meddling

SA2 and Heroes didn't have Akinori Nishiyama, Takao Miyoshi and Naoto Oshima like SA2 did, but there was still some quality left thanks to Shiro Maekawa. Once he left, it was over. Shadow was a disaster due to Maekawa's absence

Yep that one. SA2 had enemies with healthbars, but this game boy oh boy, did it fricking exaggerate. Also the level design was flat and linear as frick and it has no chaos garden (even the Advance games had them but this game didn't in any shape and form)

Cool music though. That's the one nice thing I can say about it.

      >SA2 had enemies with healthbars

No it didn't. It stuck to the classic Sonic formula where everything dies in one hit

Maybe I'm remembering it wrong but didn't the Robotnik/Tails levels had enemies that took more than one hit to be destroyed?

Nah they just had multiple lock-on points. They all had a sweet spot or main body that you could one-shot them with.

You think people that actively say they are fans of something, wouldn't keep miscalling them "Chaos" when it's Chao (it's singular and plural) and Rogue when it's Rouge

I never get this with any other era but this one. Only this era has ironic hipster "fans".

    >SA2
No, SA2 was a great game, and even though it lacked the open-world exploration, the "adventure" stages didn't really offer much in the grand scheme of things. I liked both Adventure games a lot, but to say that SA2 was a bad Sonic game is just wrong.

Heroes was really where you could start to see the writing on the wall, as the engine was pretty buggy, but the first nearly-unplayable Sonic game was Shadow the Hedgehog.

Well, after the sacrifice scene in the ending of SA2, everyone thinks he's dead. At the start of Sonic Heroes, dark team story, the crew in that mode find a Shadow the Hedgehog "android" in a bacta tank and free him. Shadow's identity is constantly called into question throughout Shadow the Hedgehog and the only way to find the truth is in a super secret location: the final boss, during the last minute before you auto lose.

If you mean "when SoJ lost their competence making video games" around Heroes since

If you mean "when SoJ lost their """soul""" " but categorized into "Classic era, Adventure era and Boost era", the lack of any game by them during the Saturn, the failure of Sonic 06, and the making of Lost World and Forces respectively.

If you mean when the fanbase felt betrayed, again within eras, SA1 for classicgays, Heroes/06 for Adventuregays, and Lost World/Forces for Boostgays)

So arguably, because of nostalgiagays, there is no "precise moment" no matter how hard you try to meme it, as every Sonicgay got assblasted by SEGA's output and other fans bullying them for liking shit Sonic games to truly pinpoint a unanimous "kill point"

3D Sonic was never good. The camera from SA1 was horrible and never got any better in subsequent games and boost, boost, boost gameplay is boring.
