I wonder how many people actually play since blizzard usually just suckers people in with those one year and 6 month subs.

How much of this is classic carrying that weight?

It's really hard to say. Paying $15 a month and getting multiple versions of WoW is kindof like the Orange Box from Valve. But I would say based on Classic doubling the player counts, and then the subsequent die off in popularity, and tepid reception of the classic expansions, probably 1/4 or 1/8 of the playerbase pays for WoW because of Classic.

A lot less than you'd think. All the "era" servers are dead and Cataclysm is unlikely to bring anyone in. SoD had a really strong start but Phase 2 fizzled out really quickly. I kinda doubt they can keep momentum, especially as it gets more and more into dumb private server shit like the 2x rates and whatnot. Gnomeregan didn't fill me with confidence that they can keep making engaging encounters either, either it stays too easy or they go full moron like retail.

Numbers and graph come straight from blizzard.

          >graph is unlabeled from Blizzard
          >Legion's number are the actual number Blizzard provided
          >Blizzard said Classic doubled their player count, which extrapolating from the graph shows the Y axis starts at 0
          >last numbers are extrapolated based on the heights

The exact tipping point is probably when J Allen Brack took over. I don't remember the exact timelines but if it was during Legion, that would be absolutely dead on. Everything starting from the Argus patch of Legion is just downhill

Legion in general introduced everything that irreparably fricked up the game and it's mind-boggling to me how many people consider it a good expansion. WoD was just mismanaged, but Legion was actively malicious.

The only """people""" who say Legion was good, are the tourists who only played during the final patch when all of the moronicly broken shit was patched out
that and the entire expac was nothing but fanservice and "dude remember this character from vanilla / TBC ????"

The only people that thinks Legion sucked were the ones that never got their legendary to drop early and that is an absolute fact.

Legion was a top tier expansion up until Argus. The world quests were fine back then, there was a ton of content, it actually rewarded being good at the game with the mage tower, there was a frickton of reasons to make alts because there was so much unique content locked behind every class, the artifact appearances alone were a blast to collect, etc.

Tell me one bad thing about Legion that isn't about the legendary drops. I fricking dare you

    Endless AP grind.
Separate AP grinds for your other specs
World quests literally being recycled content from day 1
M+ turning the game into Diablo (same content over and over but with bigger numbers each time)

Every version of the game going back to vanilla had some stupid excessive grind so you could get 0.1% extra DPS.

        1. no
        2. legion is literally designed around encouraging you to do that grind
