That's clearly not the same animation though, it's remade and inspired by. Also, the actual speeds and combos are different.

not that guy but I'm pretty sure they at least used the same rig because there are some animations on Omenkiller that still have bones for the Capra Demon's tail. I'm going to assume that they reused Capra's animations and touched them up/modified them to fit in with Elden Ring (like making them faster and such like you mentioned). No complaints from me though, I found it more fascinating than anything and also makes more sense to just clean up a preexisting animation rather than make them from scratch again.

Are you talking animations? homie there are Demon's Souls animations, and Dark Souls animations and Bloodborne animations in there, ER released using animations created 11 years prior. Rigging a jump animation must have been a feat and picture the result. Forget your 4 recycling examples, ER's down right carbon neutral.

      I'm Russian
That being said, the first playthrough was truly magical. I was playing it blind until the very later parts of the game, when I realized how many side quests I completely fricked up because of their terrible design.

One of the best gaming experiences in my whole life, period. That doesn't necessarily hold true on subsequent playthroughs, but every location was novel the first time around, so it's easier to excuse the copy-paste. I still remember coming directly from DS3, so I googled how to get Baemore as soon as possible. Sadly it isn't as good in ER, but still cool. I remember going to that elevator in the mistwood and wondering why it took so fricking long, then I witnessed Siofra River and was completely blown away. That entire area gave me fricking chills.

In terms of first playthroughs, I'd still say Elden Ring, because it's the only game I played on release. I started back in ~2014 right after DS2 came out, but my brother always backseated me on the older titles, so I never experienced them on my own. I also didn't have a PC that could run DS3 until ~2019

        Ooph....

        Demon's Souls > Dark Souls > Bloodborne > Elden Ring > Sekiro > Dark Souls 3 > Dark Souls 2

This his heavily influenced by the fact that I played them all on release, so Demon's Souls (for example) benefits tremendously from me having been new to the entire format, where as Elden Ring still impressed me despite my being so familiar with the formula.

I couldn't really say, I played all of them at release apart from Sekiro, because I prefer the Souls medieval European fantasy settings to the Japanese medieval fantasy settings.
I enjoyed all of them immensely when I played them, they all have a creepy ethereal quality to them without being outright horror, they all had moments where you're awestruck by the scale and design of the settings and the enemies.

It's completely unsurprising they reuse assets in games with this amount of content and weapons with unique movesets. For the same reason people complain because you can min/max gear and wear the most powerful items in the game combined with the most powerful buffs it becomes exponentially easier.
You can't balance a game with that much variety of gear, it's impossible, you also don't have to use the OP stuff if you don't want to.

Mostly bored. There's infinitely more 'filler time' before bosses that matter and none of it was interesting. The music was completely forgettable aside from Mohg's theme. Game is still pretty ugly and has no physics. The quests are all shit and most of them are virtually impossible to do without looking them up.

By the time I got to the snowy area I was forcing myself to finish the game, it got so repetitive.
It just isn't that good of a game. But your average moron just goes big=good. It is an unironic downgrade in almost every single regard. The fact that a game that fricking massive has one or two memorable encounters is fricking criminal.

Saw a bunch a random skulls lying around limgrave, that was some major DS2 shit, only DS2 would care so little about object placements so i dropped the game. Didn't play DS3 for a damn reason you know, wasn't about to play DS2-2 DS4 edition.
Honestly i realized the game was wrong during the intro slideshow which sounded like a wrestling hype speech telling me where the content of the game is going to be. Though i wasn't about to drop a game just because the intro raised a red flag.
But to be fair if Elden Ring had been correctly titled Dark Souls 4 then i wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

The story trailer or whatever on youtube should have been the intro but the shitty version got into the game and therefore who knew what other shitty things had ended up in the game, probably many so i quit it. A few days later the complaints from those who played further started rolling into the threads and i must admit it felt great because i fricking knew it and dodged a bullet like a pro.

      >Saw a bunch a random skulls lying around limgrave
      >care so little about object placements
Elden Ring is literally swimming in expressions of the notion that Death itself is broken and not working as it should be, with countless undead wandering around directionlessly, numerous crypts and catacombs having Deathroot come in contact with all of the bodies within and sending their undead stumbling around again, specific necromantic elements (Death Rite Birds, Ferrymen, etc.) literally just reviving corpses around them (which are ubiquitous because of the Shattering) and Limgrave itself is also full to the brim with wolves and bears and giant bats and other wildlife that could easily be carrying random bones and other body parts around (most especially because of the dug-up stone caskets everywhere being exposed to the surface being surrounded by animals could reasonably be expected to have carryouts).

I don't care about anything else in your post, but this part is specifically irritating my autism.

I became quickly disillusioned with the open world once I realized how it still tries to funnel you down certain paths with cliffs, how little of it actually matters, how pointless fighting enemies in the open world is, and how much of the side content is both repetitive, and worthless due to getting one item per dungeon, which has a high likelihood of doing nothing for you.
The comedic delayed attack animations were just another painful reminder how rollslop has ruined these games, and they made it really hard to get immersed, when every other enemy was very overtly the developer trying to compensate for foolishly handing out free iframes.
The game overstayed its welcome by quite a bit, Leyndell was still good, but the game should've ended there. The areas after it were barren and dull by comparison, and the scaling also went completely fricking wild. I remember feeling like my character got reset when I left Leyndell, because everything started doing shitloads of damage, and taking unreasonable punishment, even though I was running around with stats at softcaps, solid vigour, heavy armor, and a maxed out weapon. Balance in Leyndell felt alright, but after that it was a weird case of enemies continuing to scale, while I had hit the natural caps of everything. Very strange.
Boss design was hit & miss. Many were solid, but too many were the new normal of Fromsoft with these constant spammy flailing attacks, and overdesigned anime moves, which made some fights feel very uninteractive. Especially Maliketh with his "now I'm jumping along the walls while you can only watch, how cool is that?" phases.

It's a good game, but it shouldn't have been open world, and it made me realize that I just really hate the direction From has been going with these games since DS3.

I went in completely blind and tried to take it seriously. Chose the class that started with nothing and read all the descriptions as I found them, and tried to just soak in the world-building step by step.

It was super fun to carefully explore the world knowing nothing about what was around the next corner, so I'm really glad I decided to play it that way. The first dragon blew me away when it appeared. Had a great time even though I managed to miss the whole Ranni quest. The open world copypasta Ubisickness was a bit disappointing, but the design/layout/architecture of the open world was better than any other such game I've ever seen, so that made it a lot more tolerable.

I rushed Margit and banged my head against him until I beat him, then explored Limgrave.

I was in the mindset that it was a standard Souls game, not an open world. So I did it wrong. According to Steam stats though I think I was in the first 10% to beat him at least.

I really fricking enjoyed it and loved it. Just had a ton of fun. Everyone I knew was playing the game and we were sharing tips, secrets we found, and even summoning one another if we had to. I played an INT build just randomly, turns out it was OP as frick but it is what it is. Took me 90 hours to beat it, and I didn't even do everything or do much PVP. I did feel like it kind of dragged a bit as it went on and I certainly noticed the reused assets. It is not a perfect game, but it was still a great one and the flaws were outweighed by the positives.

I haven't played it since release, and I am looking forward to starting a new character for the DLC. Gonna probably do a STR+FAI build this time, because I still want access to some kind of magic but I don't just wanna throw rocks or spam a laser at 99% of bosses. I wanna buff up and melee some motherfrickers.

I was hellbent on using dual daggers because "if it's in the trailer then it works", had so much trouble from the lack of range and my attacks straight up not hitting an enemy when I'm literally touching them. It was pretty amazing the first time around. But I'm still somewhat disappointed that there's only been a bit of iteration for the combat system in Fromsoft's previous entries. It's somewhat understandable, given how much people seem to rail against any combat system that has more complexity or depth than anything in the Souls series, but it'd be nice to be able to use certain abilities without having to equip a spell focus all the time. I just want to actually play like a Crucible Knight and not just a cosplayer who has to switch their offhand to do so. In addition, the sheer size of the game doesn't really make me want to do another playthrough.

Around november last year i finally decided to get to playing DS3 myself after buying it 2 years earlier. After platinuming it by the end of january i decided to get Elden Ring. Only thing i looked up was wether cool Dragon stuff existed in the game, and aimed for that (but by internet osmosis i learned a bunch of plot points and of Malenia's, Margit and Mohg's fame)
Since in DS3 i played an all-around spellcaster, i decided to go back to my DS2 start and went with Mercenary all-in on Dex (inb4 gayit) paired weapons. I quickly found the Flail and used it most times i had only one hand. After dying a bunch to Margit i went to explore elsewhere, finding the Naginata in Caelid and getting one shot by an axe skeleton in Liurnia. After leveling up a bunch i finally beat Margit and went through Stormveil, beat Godrick, then braved Liurnia and breat up a single mom. Incidentally around the same time, i had found the dragon cathedral and dragon seal, so i respecced to Dragon incantations, which stayed my build until i beat Malenia and respecced back to dexhomosexualry. Went through the rest of the game, found my swaifu the KingCragb, then after beating the final boss, i checked the wiki to see if there was something i missed (just Fortissax and a couple of undergrounds in Weeping Peninsula).
9/10, will probably put many more hours into it, already at fourth character.

Went in totally blind. First 40+ hours were the most engrossed Ive been in a game since OoT as a kid. Im 32.

By the end I was bored as frick. 100+hours finally getting to the final bosses just summoned to get it done already. God damn. Moreson than any other soulslike the bosses are more dependent on learning moveset than your skills.

Give me fun builds for NG+. I ended with a bleed twinblades build for aesthetics. Respecced to faith dragon for a bit, was OK. Doing a new run with a sorcerer and Im respeccing as soon as I beat Rannala frick this gay ass spammy OP build

      Anonymous

Not really a build but I'm doing a restricted run where I level all my offensive stats equally, and limit upgrades based on my progression (+0 until Godrick, then +5/+2 until Rennala etc...). It forces me to use many different weapons, and gave me a newfound appreciation for sleep, which is busted against wildlife

FRICK, WHEN SHOULD I START MY NEW PLAYTHROUGH FOR THE DLC? I don't want to start it too early and then just have to pause in the middle to wait, but I also am just really eager to play. Haven't touched it since release and I've been itching to replay for a while but held off for the DLC, now it is so close I just wanna play.

Also, what level are you all aiming for in regards to the DLC? I don't wanna be overleveled and do 95% of the game's content before the DLC. I want to be mostly on level with it and have a nice chunk of the game left to finish. However, I am not sure how feasible that is.

Just started playing a few days ago. Game is fun and looks "cool" but it has very weak art direction and design language.
    >wtf is design language?
Bloodborne had it. SOTC,MGS, Silent hill, Oblivion are good examples too. You can look at an environment, separate armor set, weapon or prop and know that it belongs to this specific world.

In Elden ring, everything seems kind of random and not particular to this one world.

i had a dogshit pc that couldn't render enemies properly so every single enemy in the game outside of bossfights was literally just invisible
it wasn't impossible because i could still lock on to them but it definitely made everything a lot harder because i couldn't see enemy attack animations so i was dodging purely on instinct and rhythm, which was pretty fun

It was my first Fromsoft game, my first Soulslike, and the best time I've had playing a video game since i played OOT as a little kid. Fricking beautiful. My first moments in the game? I opened the door, and clicked on a blood stain. It didn't seem to do anything, but then some red guy walked up to an edge, and jumped off. Naturally, i figured this was part of the tutorial, so i followed suit. It was not part of the tutorial.
My cousin had given me a challenge, i was to walk straight to the tree sentinel without grinding, or looking anything up, fight him, and win within the attempts. If i was successful, he promised to pay me the price of the game. I set my screen recording up, left the tutorial area, and was on my way. I saw a great gold guy mounted atop a golden steed, but i went around him, obviously, in looking for the tree guy, not the gold guy. Eventually i made my way to the spot where you meet Melina, and what did i see, through the archway, perched atop a bridge of some sort? Giant. Fricking. Tree guy. I set out to climb the hill and fight him, only to see my opponent was no coward! He lept from the cliff to meet me. I kited him back past the arch way to avoid the archers, and got stomped to frick. I tried again, made it through about half his health, and again, dead. On my last attempt, i nearly killed him, but alas, again i was stomped. I reported my failure to my cousin, and to my confusion, he laughed, and told me this was not the tree guy i was looking for, nay, this was a RANDOM. FRICKING. MOB. From that moment i was hooked, but set on the right path, i went back for the tree sentinel, i set upon him, and proceeded to get absolutely hate crimed into the ground twice, before managing to actually dodge him a bit, and still dying anyway.
My cousin actually did a fricking great job of introducing me to the series, but he let that unfold naturally first. Over the coming months, i did, infact, git gud, scrub.

Replaying Dark Souls 1 has made me realize how uninspired Elden Ring is. ER feels like a twisted fairy tale setting which I think appeals to a lot of people but for me it just comes across as lazy. Even though you only explore a little bit of Lordran in Dark Souls 1 it feels a lot more fleshed out than any part of the Lands Between, I think because everything looks the same minus a few standout areas.

Combat was an improvement but holy christ the world sucked to explore outside of the legacy dungeons. They should have just taken all that dev time and energy that went toward the open world, and put it toward the player being able to sheathe their weapon. And improved animations.

Then I started with the rotten area and after 3 or 4 mini dungeons I got bored. Everything was easy already and it started to feel like a slog. I had fomo trying to hit every dungeon but they were boring as frick and the big ones were not good enough.
I can't handle open world games these days anymore with tonse of boring and non challenging sidequests
Also, everyone has their first walll with some souls boss, after they beat that and it made click, souls games become just too easy. For me it was dying 1 week straight to O&S, after that every souls game was a joke.
I liked the weapon arts but its not enough, when games become to easy I like crazy combat systems that allow me to dunk on enemies, sadly parry just isnt enough anymore. Funnily enough, thats one of the reasons DD2 is one of my fav games this year. As little side quetst as possible, most focus is on combat with big enemies and dunking on them.

When these games have linear levels and corridors, rooms then to me it makes sense that some monstrous guards get in my way to stop me because they were ordered to guard what's behind them which is the only place for me to go next.
If they're sprinkled over an open map then i find the context of the situation has changed and these monsters appear like roaming psychos who attack anyone they see and i'm also a roaming psycho attacking everyone for no reason.
I may become overwhelmed by the goofy nature of a confrontation. It's like the monster and i are having a homie moment.

not really, i found it surprisingly tedious.

i vastly prefer sekiro and bloodborne, really all of the more linear games. it does have the best implementation of a mount ive ever seen in a game, thats the real lesson other devs need to take from this. torrent was great.

it had the absolutle bottom-tier, trash-tier armor sets. worst of any from game, and its not even fricking close.

The whole scenery - for me, you homosexuals - was by far one of the most beautiful in the whole souls games. It hit the nostalgia of Dark Souls 2, the colors, the whole freedom. I really liked it. But dear god this game drops the ball once you kill Morgott.

I know what you mean. A lot of balance patches and QoL features have made the game way more fun to play, so if there was a playstyle you didn't like the first time around at launch it's probably better now

its a behemoth of a game i dont blame people doing 1 playthrough thats typically over 100 hours long after you finished it, it feels like you been through war, its a good thing you are probably itching to play the DLC more than the people who play the game 24/7.

my advice is wait for the DLC then do a second whole play through from the start thats what im doing

i mean there's A LOT of stuff that you'll have to dig into and read on the internet about, but on the surface level it's not hard to understand what the story in the game is about, which was nice, because when i played DS games for the first time i had no fricking idea at all what the story was

The thing that's crazy to me, is even if objectively it's probably the game with the most enemy variety (compare to other open world games and it's crazy), it still ends up feeling like you're fighting the same recycled enemies all the time, barely any new enemies in the last part of the game, etc.

That's where it even gets mogged by lower budget titles like Lies of P, which is a just a blatant clone, but even they understood how meaningful it is to still offer new enemies on the last level. Or how they managed to recycle some enemies by mixing them together as familiar but unique variants. That was one of the coolest things in P.

If they were going to recycle enemies from their past games, I wish they had gone all in, and simply put every. single. enemy from previous souls titles in there. Make it into the ultimate compilation. If the logic is that all the assets are already available, and players eventually don't mind refighting the same ds3 knights or ds1 capra demons or ds3 imps or ds3 crabs anyway in a new game, then there's zero excuse for recycling big dogs and big crows into the mountaintops, no excuse for recycling godrick.... when they could have thrown in different flavors of past games recycled enemies instead.

I don't mind some recycling if it's thoughtful and adequately recontextualized, and if it's spread around the map carefully in terms of pacing/variety. I recently enjoyed Archthrones mod and even though it's heavy recycling, it felt very fresh to me. But with ER, there are enemies in their collection that are over exploited while some are under exploited.

Started as a prisoner, went full int build, became a stealth Black person towards the later parts of the game after I found the staff and spells in the hidden tower, because I never found that infinite FP crystal tear thing

One of the best games, maybe the best game I've ever played, the wizards journey in the game is amazing.
Only negative I had was I played it through with my friend who had never touched a souls game before and he was a complete whiny bastard the entire time but also wouldn't just give up and stop playing, supposedly he ""loved"" it, but didn't shut the frick up and it kinda bummed me out .

Loved it. I did not expect to fall in love with it as much I have. I had zero interest and expectations going into it. As many anons on this board, I’m not too interested in video games. I really only play a few set of games a year; fromsoft though has always been my favorite developers. Coming into Elden Ring I was just not into playing video games at all that time in my life, though I would occasionally glance at little bits of news from this game here and there.

When Elden Ring came out I bought it on a whim. I don’t remember exactly why I bought it, boredom and perhaps in a weird way out a respect for Fromsoft. I really did think I was just mostly over video games in general even from my favorite series.

Fell in love with the game within a few hours, perhaps 6-10. Couldn’t stop talking about it. I remembered that I actually still enjoy video games. This was as good as it can get for anyone. No hype, no expectations, never stared at the calendar waiting for release, then just being completely surprised by how enthralling it is.

Now I have the complete opposite for shadow of the erdtree, too hyped, high expectations, and literally counting the days.

I asked this question in a thread yesterday, but it died before I could answer the feedback. It's my first time playing Elden Ring and I haven't really played these games since Demon's in 2009. Killing Tree Sentinel was the first thing I did upon stepping outside the church instead of sneaking past him like I'm assuming you're meant to and got his halberd which I wanted to wield so I dumped most of my points into strength until I could. So with that in mind, how fricked did I make myself? I recently found some area with a bunch of crawling hands that kick my shit in fast and easy.

Elden ring was the my first soulslike and I spent the first third of the game with the turtle shield doing doing the block and spin attack thing. It was great until I ran into the Crucible knight and he informed me that my Stamina was shit and I do no damage. So I started using bloodhound because the weapon art looked cool and I didn't even know it could teleport until ashen capital. I thought omens were really cool. I summoned the jellyfish a lot and missed 90% of the caves. I got the frenzy flame end. It was great.

    >Man these bosses are getting obnoxious, it feels like the animators are just wanking their boss designs to the detriment of the player now.
