Probably. BL3's all-time peak on steam is about 25% less than BL2. The real failure was probably Wonderlands though. Pitchford did nothing but crow about how well it did, but its all-time peak on Steam is 88% less than BL2 and over twice as many people are currently paying BL2 than Wonderlands despite it being an 11 year old game. BL3 probably did OK, but even there it's clear they're spending more money and time to make things that do worse.
Bl3 sold a lot i think, it was a huge release with a good amount of hype behind it. Its season pass content and the actual game itself was subpar so less people kept playing and buying all the dlc unlike the first 2 games

Gearbox got too big for its britches after they accidentally struck it out of the ballpark with Borderlands 2 which even then was largely carried by Handsome Jack's memorable performance in the main story plus Randy Pitchford's general existence as a human being.
It's weird going back to Borderlands 1 and seeing how decent the writing was. Sometimes even got me to chuckle. It felt like it was trying to do what Fallout did where you can mellow out the really bleak shit with some black comedy. Not done nearly as well as Fallout of course, but decently. That degraded with every subsequent entry, and I think it's because the humor became a better focus and it wasn't funny 99% of the time post BL1. BL3 is the worst of them all, and that game has the best combat by far. Would it be impossible for them just just turn it down the humor ONCE? Even a spin-off or something, I just want something with BL1's quality of writing.
The biggest difference is that in BL1 the Vault Hunters were mercenaries chasing a dollar then all the sudden in BL2 they became rah rah freedom fighters for no good reason.

Borderlands 1 never forgets that it's a story about scrappy characters in a wasteland scavenging for a living. It has a sad, comfy vibe at times and then humor and cartoon aesthetic are meant to balance this out. It's why Tales worked so well: it focused on a core drama and peppered in jokes occasionally to keep it from getting too heavy.

Cringe out of touch writers, that's literally it, BL3, mechanically is a great game, the looting, shooting, leveling and skills are fun, the problem with it is every time a character opens their mouth you're instantly filled with odium and second hand embarrassment, sure you can mute the voices but then the whole experience becomes kinda meaningless
People really underestimate how much the setting, story and characters contribute to the enjoyment of a game, it's why you have mechanically barebones games with good humor and theming become successful and mechanically deep and engaging games fail because they lack a soul
I honestly feel really bad for the people working on Borderlands who just wanted to make a game that blended FPS and Diablo together in a space western/cyberpunk setting.

Gearbox got too big for its britches after they accidentally struck it out of the ballpark with Borderlands 2 which even then was largely carried by Handsome Jack's memorable performance in the main story plus Randy Pitchford's general existence as a human being.

It's weird going back to Borderlands 1 and seeing how decent the writing was. Sometimes even got me to chuckle. It felt like it was trying to do what Fallout did where you can mellow out the really bleak shit with some black comedy. Not done nearly as well as Fallout of course, but decently. That degraded with every subsequent entry, and I think it's because the humor became a better focus and it wasn't funny 99% of the time post BL1. BL3 is the worst of them all, and that game has the best combat by far. Would it be impossible for them just just turn it down the humor ONCE? Even a spin-off or something, I just want something with BL1's quality of writing.
The biggest difference is that in BL1 the Vault Hunters were mercenaries chasing a dollar then all the sudden in BL2 they became rah rah freedom fighters for no good reason.

Borderlands 1 never forgets that it's a story about scrappy characters in a wasteland scavenging for a living. It has a sad, comfy vibe at times and then humor and cartoon aesthetic are meant to balance this out. It's why Tales worked so well: it focused on a core drama and peppered in jokes occasionally to keep it from getting too heavy.

2 and 3 are the furthest thing from realistic gun play, more than half of the guns work on fucking magic logic then anything remotely realistic.
For all it's faults, BL3's gameplay is NOT one of them. The gunplay in 3 is some of the best RPG gunplay out there. 2's was floaty as fuck and 1's still holds up, but it's a very limited game in comparison to the sequels. (Also who the fuck designed iron sights in 1? Did they just hate the player?)

Borderlands 2 was a surprise hit, so the market for the "looter shooter" became oversaturated. And people got tired of that zany quirky but with a sprinkle of nihilistic 2000s humor.
If borderlands was a true sequel nobody wanted it or would have cared. To add insult to injury they replaced what they were know for in previous game by injecting current day politics wokeisms, and had a team diversity hires that couldn't write script or code if their life depended on it. Put out a game that was worse than the second game in every aspect. Writing offensively bad, broken and buggy at launch.
