The result? It doesn't appeal to anyone. DMC players don't want it because it doesn't have the skill ceiling required to make it cuhrayzee. jRPG fans don't want it, because it has no true growth systems or RPG mechanics. Final Fantasy fans don't want it, because it's ashamed of its roots and is drab and gritty.
TL;DR; FF16 is a game made by a coward. Someone who is scared of being labelled as cringe, so he's afraid to truly express himself with the game. He WANTED it to blend in with Western games, rather than wearing it's japanese-ness that we love on its sleeve. He made a game for everyone, but no one.

Exactly dumbass, that's what separates a normal RPG and a jRPG too. Jokes aside though: there are definitely major differences between W-Action and J-Action. Compare the Onions of War reboot games to DMC5 for example. Japanese action games tend to have a focus on aerial combat and combo'ing for the sake of style, whereas western ones are almost always limited to boring as ground-only combat and having no interesting combos or style.
The reality is mediocre action sells better than "great" turn based jrpgs and japs like money just like everyone else.

Anon, Itsuno wasn't making 3D action games until Devil May Cry 2, and he was brought on at the end of development. Devil May Cry 1 by Kamiya came out only months before Kingdom Hearts 1 and wasn't an RPG. I'm specifically discussing the influences on Action JRPGs. I don't think you're quite following me here. And on top of that, DMC1 unironically has shallower combat than KH1 and is a much simpler game.
KH1 not only was one of the first 3D Action jRPGs ever made due to the big jump between PS1 and PS2, but it actually had different growth paths as well depending on the choices you made at the beginning of the game. Along with different weapons, attributes, magic, and so on - that were all reflected in the combat gameplay that required actual player skill as well on harder difficulties. It was novel for the time and that's part of why it was so successful.
Nomura has a pretty fine eye for innovating gameplay. FF7Remake will probably be echoed for years after, considering he was able to full million of normies into playing a turn-based ATB game without them realizing it.

In X, from the perspective of Tidus, Fate isn't just bound to happen, it basically already happened. Tidus is dead from the start, or shortly after the intro.
From the perspective on Yuna, she did her pilgrimage and defeated Sin. She didn't die herself, but she lost her lover, which is meant to be a parallel to dying yourself.
The string of fate is left unharmed by the end of X, the characters have to learn how to live with it.
Of course, if you got X-2 which Toriyama DID write, that's completely done away with and everything that happened in X is uncerimoniously shat on and desecrated. Just like VII:R.
It was undisputably Toriyama, and I honestly think he put in a fucking heartless at the end just to shift blame on Nomura, who doesn't write stories like this and never has.

The FF games also come heavily from D&D, and western titles like Ultima. They could like, return to those roots. Instead they took the third path, which doesn't appeal to anyone. They're trying hard to be not rpgs, but action titles like Genshin Impact or Devil May Cry, and trying to emulate Game of Thrones. Something like Demon's Souls and Dark Souls actually harkens back to D&D style fantasy.
They also poached a lot of Platinum devs during Nier: Automata's development, and this may have actually bit them in the ass instead of being a blessing. They kept chasing "mature" action development, rather than RPG. RPG can be real time, it just needs to play out differently.
So in the end, it ends up not really appealing to anyone.

Half of the sidequests could and should have been cut, personally I feel as if Martha and the desert rose guy add very little and I don't mind their character's very much. Mid's entire quest chain was Mid and should have been cut. The game could have had 10 more hours of of backstory or extra mainquest stuff and it would be fine. I agree it feels short, especially the Eikon confrontations feel like they have very little build up. They each get two levels, except Dion lol, and very few screen time of you actively seeking them down. Arguably Garuda only has one and Barnie has 3. Barnie's also not in the story enough for a dragon character

Their captors are known for killing the men and taking the women. Jill was capure, raped and subsequently turned into a Dominant. To keep her under control, her captors threatened to kill her countrymen if she tried to fight back. It's implied in the codex and the conversations when Jill goes to kill the high priest. When she arrives, they're in the middle of an orgy. However, rather than showing an orgy, the devs opt to show a sacrifice, which contradics the reason of Jill not resorting to prime into Shiva and killing everyone. So, the sacrifice is just shown to hide what the story implies, rape. Ofcourse, the devs are not going to show a full out rape scene.

My main problem with 15 is how "floaty" all the combat felt. It didn't feel reactive to what you were pressing at all, you just sort of vaguely hold the button down and things happen. It felt bad.

Also I played 15 on release so... obviously it was MUCH worse then, and only having control of a single character was absolutely horrible. Surprising as hell that they repeated that mistake for 16.
You don't hold anything in XV, you tap and you are better off tapping, and you have way more animation cancels in XV than anything 16 offers and way more combo variety too

I like the game but its not a Final Fantasy game I think anyone but a select few wanted. Enix trying to cater to normies, nerds and westaboos all at once didn't work and they're finding that out the hard way. There was nothing wrong with turn based FF games, they were cheaper to make and the genre is still very profitable. Look at Baldur's Gate 3. If Enix could get over their action-RPG fetish and take the series back to its roots maybe they won't end up having to sell the company when Rebirth completely bombs.
They made an harder difficulty for a game that's mostly cutscenes and corridors so stupid. Also why would anyone want to redo the eikon fights? It's just mashing square and triangle or whatever it makes no difference for 10 minutes. Playing as ifrit feels weaker than playing as clive, that's how badly they fucked up.

The good games distract you from it with interesting stuff happening in the hallways, but it's largely the same shit.
What's even worse is that it has the pull all mobs and AoE them with ultimates. Just like ff14 dungeon pulls. There is hardly any reason to pull of combos, aside from chaining ultimates during boss fights.

FF7R has the level with the sliding platforms, pretty good on that front, but given that most of their games are just corridor games its to be expected, I don't think level design has ever been final fantasy's strong suit, even if occasionally there are good ones like Ultimecia's castle

Compare the Onions of War reboot games to DMC5 for example. Japanese action games tend to have a focus on aerial combat and combo'ing for the sake of style, whereas western ones are almost always limited to boring as ground-only combat and having no interesting combos or style.

Devil May Cry 1 by Kamiya came out only months before Kingdom Hearts 1 and wasn't an RPG. I'm specifically discussing the influences on Action JRPGs. I don't think you're quite following me here. And on top of that, DMC1 unironically has shallower combat than KH1 and is a much simpler game.
KH1 not only was one of the first 3D Action jRPGs ever made due to the big jump between PS1 and PS2, but it actually had different growth paths as well depending on the choices you made at the beginning of the game. Along with different weapons, attributes, magic, and so on - that were all reflected in the combat gameplay that required actual player skill as well on harder difficulties. It was novel for the time and that's part of why it was so successful.
Nomura has a pretty fine eye for innovating gameplay. FF7Remake will probably be echoed for years after, considering he was able to full million of normies into playing a turn-based ATB game without them realizing it.

The FF games also come heavily from D&D, and western titles like Ultima. They could like, return to those roots. Instead they took the third path, which doesn't appeal to anyone. They're trying hard to be not rpgs, but action titles like Genshin Impact or Devil May Cry, and trying to emulate Game of Thrones. Something like Demon's Souls and Dark Souls actually harkens back to D&D style fantasy.
They also poached a lot of Platinum devs during Nier: Automata's development, and this may have actually bit them in the ass instead of being a blessing. They kept chasing "mature" action development, rather than RPG. RPG can be real time, it just needs to play out differently.
So in the end, it ends up not really appealing to anyone.

This isn't a plothole, we don't know what the deal is with Leviathan. It could be that Leviathan truly is lost, no descendants of the Motes of Water left to produce a Leviathan Dominant, and obviously it's better to try to brute force it with Clive than let this chance pass him by. Even if Leviathan were in the game, it wouldn't matter because part of the point is that Ultima is just as self-serving and full of hubris as humans.

Half of the sidequests could and should have been cut, personally I feel as if Martha and the desert rose guy add very little and I don't mind their character's very much. Mid's entire quest chain was Mid and should have been cut. The game could have had 10 more hours of of backstory or extra mainquest stuff and it would be fine. I agree it feels short, especially the Eikon confrontations feel like they have very little build up. They each get two levels, except Dion lol, and very few screen time of you actively seeking them down. Arguably Garuda only has one and Barnie has 3. Barnie's also not in the story enough for a dragon character

However, rather than showing an orgy, the devs opt to show a sacrifice, which contradics the reason of Jill not resorting to prime into Shiva and killing everyone. So, the sacrifice is just shown to hide what the story implies, rape. Ofcourse, the devs are not going to show a full out rape scene.

I like the game but its not a Final Fantasy game I think anyone but a select few wanted. Enix trying to cater to normies, nerds and westaboos all at once didn't work and they're finding that out the hard way. There was nothing wrong with turn based FF games, they were cheaper to make and the genre is still very profitable. Look at Baldur's Gate 3.
