        They trusted microsoft.

What are you braindead morons talking about? They were literally stealing funds away from MS to develop their own game and surprise surprise it completely came back to b***h them in the ass when it ruined their reputation with publishers. morons

It's not fair. Maybe they can turn around. I haven't completely given up. Astral Chain was only a few years ago.

The idea was that they could balance doing commissioned/contract work for other people's IPs so they would have the financial freedom to work on their dream projects. Like how actors will get a superhero role to get a Hollywood paycheck and increase their marketability, so they can do serous dramas or stage plays that they actually give a shit about, that don't have much of an explosive box office presence.
When that never panned out, i.e. they never really got the clout to work on whatever they wanted which is why Mikami and later Kamiya left, they really entered kind of a bad spot.
I don't think as long as Nintendo will eventually want an Astral Chain 2 that they'll ever really shut down, but after the generally subdued and shrugging response to the recent Bayonetta games and the complete failure of Babylon's Fall and losing the Granblue Fantasy project, I think their future state is that of a journeyman studio rather than idea guys making whatever they want and getting Sega or Nintendo to pay for it.

The Korra game seemed to be the point where they started to dip, which is weird because that was their B team. I still get kickstarter news from the Wonderful 101 Switch port.

Platinum was already in a bad state when Nier Automata (made by a bunch of studio newbies) gave them some extra air.
After that the only games they made that werent blatant publisher scams were their Switch exclusives

At this point I doubt any publisher other thsn Nintendo is dumb enough to work with them

Yeah, when they signed that deal for cheap games with Activision they got unmasked as greedy hacks. Only the Transformers game got a pass (even the PS2 visuals could be forgiven)

Platinum needs to make a separate brand for their shovelware titles so its easier to identify the real games that they release

Hard to say, they clearly have some issues but i cant say what they need to fix and its not lack of talent since Astral Chain, which was recent, was good, flawed, but good.

When problems are this vague the best thing to blame is lack of direction from higher ups, they dont know where they are going, nor what they should be doing.

The luster was already peeling away by then, but the interviews coming out that it was Platinum themselves that pushed for a live service model with Babylons Fall instead of just doing another character action lite like NieR:A for square is when I completely gave up
Square just wanted to fund another hit with a partner they'd built a lot of trust with and they got stuck in the middle of the studio's weird obsession with needing to get a long term service title out.
