I’m genuinely curious what you mean by player freedom and what are some examples. I’ve only gone off script and maybe abandoned an NPC, are you talking about not being able to run in guns blazing on a stealth mission or something
For the scenario, they had to play hard on the "Arthur been with this gang for a long time" part, because the player takes control in a place where a lot of dynamics are already solidified. The GTA games for example are not so big on this, you start with few solid contacts at the beginning, so the player state of mind is similar to the characters.
In RDR2, things are a lot more established and been like that for a long time, so they both had to :
- get the player in line with Arthur mind by being heavy on the camp aspects to make up for the off screen story
- get the player in line with Arthur so the end payoff of the game works
I got annoyed by how much the camp and interactions where present compared to other similar games, but the payoff made it worth.
For the inputs, it's the common complaints. Slowness, inertia, don't go 10 meters too far or the mission is lost, do this THIS WAY AND NO OTHER WAY.
I still find RDR2 to be an amazing game, but I kept a better memory of RDR1 and the GTA games as a game experience. RDR2 rather hit on a philosophical and "human" level.
Generally speaking, when you take a mission from beginning to end, you can already chose between a bike, a car, or an helicopter. 3 widely different physic vehicles to reach a point compared to less varied horses and wood carts. Also there's pedestrians everywhere, the police is a lot more active everywhere (too much in GTAV sometimes).
The cities being a lot more furnished with objects and geometry, it adds more variation on the shit that can happen during the mission.
I was not exactly speaking about "kill this guy with a knife and nothing" else, but how from beginning to end there's more tools and approaches.
I think RDR2 balances that by having all of the interactivity in side missions and wilderness. But the player has to go for it.
I don't know if I'm clear enough but to me that's more or less the reasons there's been a lot of backlash to RDR2. Myself for example I did not out of my way to go for the freedom, because I got frustrated by the main missions and it burned me before I could even open myself to the whole game.
You globally feel less free in RDR2 despite the game being so wide and detailed. They went just a tad overboard by wanting to immerse the player instead of letting him immerse himself. But it's Rockstar, they're not going to fail that bad that quick, so RDR2 is still a beast of a game.

From your comment about movie eaters you weren’t a fan but I think that’s what made RDR2 so great, going back and perfecting missions and making them cinematic. I’m not a fan of Guarma either
imo it shouldn't have even existed, the entire allure of it was that it was a pie-in-the-sky paradise that the gang knew in the back of their heads was never gonna exist. the plot would have been better off if the boat escape didn't actually happen and the crew was busted.

Guarma was a completely different island, which if anything represented the anti-Tahiti narratively, i.e, the gang thinks they're sailing off to an island paradise, land on a completely different island that's equally lush, and tropical in appearances but instead of being a vacation destination it's a hellish warzone. Rockstar made that stupid excuse, "Well, you see, the face rigging for Marsten's original face doesn't match the face of the person playing Morgan, so we had to reshape him to Morgan's facial proportions." It's a dumb fricking lazy-ass excuse used by a team that basically admits they don't want to manually tweak the animations to look right, they just want the software to do it all for them. It's the same stupid goddamn excuse Insomniac gave for swapping out Bubniak's face for the far-too-young face used in Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales.
Autistic attention to inane details like store catalogues or horse testicle shrinkage but mission structure is walky-talky into hordy-shooty like in every other rockstar open world game.
