          1. This explains why some of the portraits have such a donut steal vibe to them. Particularly Bald "Stone Cold" Fighter dude and Keldorn whom always felt overly precious and trying to be cool.

          2. Good thing Mike Sass and Programmer Melax are so aesthetic. In fact the Sass couple are too attractive and chadlike.

          3. Wtf Imoen is way more attractive in person. tfw no finnish sister-wife.

          4. There's no way Nalia being Drew Barrymore is a "possible." It was obvious from a 5 second glance.

You'll never understand. It's yet another example of timeless SOUL. Think about it.
    >Game is based on old school, tough as nails, unapologetic thac0 D&D.
    >All the recruitable characters throw around 90s era basement nerd catch phrases and movie references. (If you played D&D at all in the 90s this was coon PC behavior)
    >The campaign is fricking insane. Random encounters easily capable of TPK. Dishonest and hostile NPCs. Your weapons break without warning when you need them most. Even the map is useless as you have to explore every corner yourself, risking life and limb just to find out where to go. (Something an butthole killer DM would do.)
    >And of course, the portraits are all middle aged LARPers in questionably anachronistic styles of dress... just like the players themselves.

In reality, it's Bless, Chant, Haste, every spell that increase thac0 and ac and then you press on enemy to throw a dozen of attackss in hopes 1 of them will actually be a hit.
Not a problem in BG2 where you are capable of designate everything you see by spamming summons, aura effects with inviz/sanctuary, cheetah and kill them out of existence and every possible exploit you can come up with

You're reminding me of why BG is so good. So many options to get around almost EVERY opponent or problem in the game, nothing like the creative laziness devs have today.

What are you taking about, none of that is needed at all. You cast sleep. That's it, for 95% of the game. Then you beat in skulls with a sling. Bg1 is entirely sleep and ranged attacks, with some summon monster or animate dead spam for flavor and to set off traps.

        Anonymous

No, you could buy more expensive non-breakable weapons from one smith afterwards. But you wouldn't because magic weapons were unbreakable and by then you probably had enough for your party by then.

        Anonymous

Normal weapons made of metal still have a chance to break on critical failure, if you fail the following death save
Then there's the iron crisis chance to break, which is a low % on every hit, on top of that, which disappears after you bring the samples to the blacksmith

Well, that what happens when you are literally supposed to be dead by the end of 4th chapter. Making her bhaalspawn was such a dumb move, just as dumb was to make your go to thief be a traitor

          Anonymous

Originally she wasn't part of the plot at all, and her voiceover lines were recorded for a female extra. She was only added when playtesters complained that the early chapters of the game were too difficult to complete if the PC didn't recruit unstable nutjob Montaron into the party (this is the reason she never interacts with other NPCs, incidentally — there was no time to record additional dialog).

Imoen was also originally supposed to die in Spellhold. The developers changed their minds upon seeing fan poll results, leading to the aforementioned RetCon.

Not gonna lie, that would have pissed me off. I really like Imoen, and definitely losing her would have been sort of a dick move, especially if you used her in the first game.

in 1 you want a cleric a thief and a mage. you can fill up with a druid or two archer types. bards are really bad for most of the game unless you are playing the original version with moral failure. multi class casters are pretty bad but thief/fighters are great

in 2 I recommend getting a cleric a mage and a thief aswell but you can mix and match more easily. archery is way less powerful but all classes are strong

Take the ranger sub class Archer and you’ll destroy everything. Just have to buy the arrows. Pc +2 Archers = cakewalk. The entire game is a cakewalk, no matter what, really.

I'm surprised that everyone discusses Saerilith when the Gigastacy Sandrah exists, who can do everything, is related to everyone, fricks everyone, is adored by everyone and so thoroughly corrupts the game that you become a lowly sidekick in your own story.

You’re all buffle headed. Sure she’s got the stats, but not sure how people stand listening to her. I’d probably like her better in 2 if they left her a straight thief. As it is she always feels like a fifth wheel. If you want a thief mage dual class you’ll already have that rich girl with the stronghold.

One thing that really irked me in BG2 was that the game gave you a canon party of goody-two-shoes with Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Dynaheir and that way too overrated bald moron Minsc even if you played an evil party or with totally different good or neutral characters.
I know they had to, in a way, but still, I think they could have done it another way.

I think its nice how easy they let you roleplay it away though. never even push you that Minsc and Jaheira are in the cages. could just escape with Imoen and then pretend she died in Spellhold and play with your own head canon party

Everything is good (except monks), although casters have the most interesting progression since every level brings something new.

I'd recommend playing the original and getting the bugfix pack with the HD resolution mod first. I know the Enhanced Edition exists, but it breaks the balancing and trivialises so many fights that would otherwise be at least a mild bump on your journey.

I've never played Dark Alliance but i'm pretty sure it has no relation to the main BG story. The proper order is BG1 + Sword Coast -> BG2 -> BG2 Throne of Bhaal. Ideally with the extra EE content disabled via mod since that adds non-canon NPCs and items.

Being fair to EE, you can do more with modding for it than with OG because of advances in the engine and coding. For as much as Beamdog screwed up, it is the superior modding platform. Ascension in particular does more and works better than it ever could in OG, and both games can now be unified.

That said, they also fixed bugs and exploits in the infinity engine that were funny or fun to use. That's way more unforgivable than anything else.

BG1 Coran, Alora and Montaron are fantastic dmg dealers and good thieves. you can also dual class Shar-Teel to a thief. Coran is the single best archer in the game aswell. doing shit tons of damage
BG2 Yoshimo cant really do much dmg but he has traps which are insanely powerful. Jan, Nalia and Imoen are mages which is better than dealing physical dmg. if you want to play a backstabber you need to make your own thief in BG 2 though

        Anonymous

Problem with Coran is that you're likely to get him at a later level due to his location and you probably won't be able to get his find traps up enough for some areas, besides that he seems very strong.

is Imoen not good? I used her for all of 1 and 2 (Jan subbed for her while she was in story prison) and she did fine both in 1 as an archer mostly and in 2 as one of my mages. had little issue with traps, though combat wise I did play on core rules so she could be worse on the autimso modes

Imoen is good, I used her in a previous playthrough though and trying a more evil group and didn't like her personality, so trying to figure out a decent replacement for another playthrough.

I used Nalia and Imoen in BGII focusing on their mage side and just had them chug a potion of thievery whenever I needed them to deal with traps. I usually had them used ranged weapons when not spellslinging.

Not that anon but what about sorcerers? They can gain spells as they level but can't memorize from scrolls though.

Sorcerer is a strong pick, and it continues to be in the 3E games from where it originates. It's nice having your entire repertoire on hand if it's your first time playing and don't know what to expect. Much of the utility in that comes from being a wizard is lost in the translation from tabletop, so specialising and having more spells per day really comes into it's own in video game format.

      Anonymous

you want both but in BG 1 cleric spells are more impactful if you have to pick. mage dps spells you could just use wands and arrows for

there's a ring hidden in a like one pixel wide crack in a rock just below the friendly arm in that doubles your lvl 1 mage spells

this will improve your low level mage experience dramatically

personally i prefer mage since cleric tends to be healbot/less good fighter for quite a few levels compared to mages' "useful once per day" shtick but either one is fun to use

I honestly liked him. He had that same "frick you, I'm better" sort of mentality that I was initially roleplaying my character as.
I almost literally made the same character as an NPC. I had to restart and make a new sorcerer, but with more of an emphasis on crowd control and with the guy in the purple robes with his hands up as my portrait, and RP'd him as a manipulative chaotic neutral sort of puppeteer kinda guy. Like those old-ass wojak memes, "this is all just a game to me. Dance little roaches".

My hotel's as clean as an Elven arse.

I can still, after all these years, remember that perfectly. I wish I kept my old disc set, I really love how it folded out, and on the "insert disk X" screens showed What's-His-Face: the evil brother guy.
Oh, what I'd give to go back in time to play this for the first time again on my ancient e-machines PC in my childhood room again, sitting on my shitty wood chair in front of my old wooden office desk with a plate of wheat thins and grapes by my side with a bat man glass of soda, surrounded by CD cases, game boxes, and notes/maps from other games written on graph paper.
      Those were the good days.

If you talk about medication being shit during middle ages then this has nothing to do with Fantasy magical realm where only the most stupid of mages require Lichification to achieve immortality.

No, priests actually pray to and serve their gods, which cannot be said of the israelites since their own mythos is based almost entirely on God punishing them constantly for their disobedience and hubris.

What is it with RPGs and schizos projecting their cuck fetish onto everything? They're literally everywhere.

      Anonymous

The cuck fetish is entirely based around being forced on someone else against their consent. Of course the people into it can't leave others alone, the more it irritates you the harder those homosexuals get.
They're like furries, only worse. A furry is capable of segmenting himself off from society by choice, but NTRoids must constantly violate new ground and find new, wholesome couples to ruin if they're to maintain their erection.

Yeah it didn't really feel like all the big a deal to me. The whole bhaal thing was kind of irrelevant in the first game. Even in SoA the plot is more about Irenicus being a bad dude than it is about you being the son of Bhaal.

It doesn't really become a critical plot point until ToB.

Worthless. I never use that ability on any playthrough. If they wanted you to use bhaal's power they shouldn't have added such an annoying drawback to it.

Besides, you can't cast while in slayer form which means you can't use timestop, breach, and protection from magic weapons.

I wish there was good art of it, but there's none that I've found.

It's so bad it can't really be described with words. Just play either Original Sin game, you will understand. It's art, in a way.

        Anonymous

I played the first and it felt like the writers didn't have confidence so they had to inject a little comedy into almost every interaction. Which can work if done properly (like the Discworld books) but it wouldn't make sense for a Baldur's Gate game.

          Anonymous

I don't know, I can't really see how the story would have worked. The plot is about "saving the world" but it just doesn't feel that way. The cultist subplot, which goes on for the good half of the game, ends up being nothing, the villain is atrocious and the devs' attempts flesh her out through sibling rivalry and love triangle were pathetic. Hell, Zandalor didn't even react when both of them died near the end.
I believe there isn't a single part in the writing of OS1 that was done well.
