Gee, I wish. Im a huge BW fan, but only millennials and boomers still play. Zoomers dont particulary enjoy it, and lots of old players have busted wrists from asiatic clicking all the time. Probably in the future, ai players will probably play broodwar and we will be watching

Chess got to be where it is because game design was garbage for literally millennia. Chess' position is grandfathered in, but it's already not that big compared to other online games even if you consider that it probably has staying power.
It's staying power is probably due to cheating being difficult. While cheating plagues the online sphere, the true competition variant is still tabletop and that narrows cheating options down significantly.

chess is where it is because anyone can craft the game themselves out of some bits of wood and a flat surface

Chess has two major flaws. Excessive opening memorization can be fixed by upgrading to Chess960, and excessive draws in high level play can be partly mitigated by banning castling. En passant is ugly but not a major flaw.

Go has objectively better design than Chess and avoids both these problems by default, but it's not as elegantly designed as people who don't play it like to think. Komi is an ugly hack to reduce first player advantage, counting is less fun than checkmating, and the anti-repetition rules are not standardized globally and are worse than chess (either superko, which is annoying to track, or the total clusterfuck of Japanese rules).
