so I'll need to get a better GPU otherwise everything will run bad? Can't I run my games at 1080p or something?
I want a 4k monitor for media and stuff mostly
I was thinking about 1440p but I want to go all the way

Post CPU and GPU
I have a 5600x, GPU is shit so I'm gonna buy the last nvidia
4k will run fine. Looks great for desktop use, I have a 27 inch 4k and i Love it. Just use DLSS for games
>Looks great for desktop use
Yeah I've heard it looks amazing and super sharp
Is it better on 27 or 32 4K?
>Just use DLSS for games
What does that mean
last time a dumb gen-z customer and his parent ordered 27 inch 4k monitor from my store, he returned it because its too big for his head and desk
do you truly need 4k monitor? maybe just buy a 4K TV exclusively plays your media not gaming
Stop wasting money
if you want 4k go big and get a TV. I have both a 32" 4k monitor and a 55" 4k LG OLED, 4k is a meme on the 32" but is amazing on the TV
what about ppi on bigger screens
4K is a waste on less than 40 inch display
I have a 27" 2k monitor and it's really more than I need. I don't know how people make use of 4k.
You can use integer scaling, so 1080p looks exactly like on a 1080p monitor without any upscaling blur.
I'm using 4K TV as PC monitor and yeah, I can't run more recent games at native 4K, but at resolution that high those upscaling methods like DLSS, FSR or even a simple resolution slider, really shine.
You can also add 1800p and 1620p resolutions via control panel, they still look pretty good despite not being native resolutions and should work with every game.
>You can use integer scaling, so 1080p looks exactly like on a 1080p monitor without any upscaling blur.
let's see a screenshot of a game
What does this mean?
I was asking the poster for a vidya screenshot a 1080p image that's integer upscaled to 4K
I'll have to post these one at a time because of compression
Base 1080p (game has no AA)
Keep in mind the HUD also has assets that are already upscaled from 720p (basically anything not text)
And here's a simple upscale
Every single pixel is turned into 4 pixels of the same color. Posting it here would be pointless, on 1080p monitor you would only see zoomed in picture.
So is 4k still a meme?
unless you want to play 30fps it absolutely is
wait until the 4090 and buy it, then maybe it isnt
4K 24 inch
Simple as.
Does that even exist?
Yes, there is like 10 monitors that were mostly produced in 2017
Recent ones(2020-2022) are produced only for Macs, so it's x5 more expensive than the older ones
Most games can't fully utilize 4k.
Don't buy a small 4k screen. Would you use a 14" 1080p screen? Of course not. So why the frick would you use a 28" 4k one?
You'll probably have to turn down the graphics on newer games, but that doesn't matter because new games suck ass and retro stuff looks great at 4k and will run on a toaster. The best part is all the extra fricking space for shit, 4k is the first time I've thought "yeah, LCDs actually have a reason to exist now".
>28"
Bloat, you don't need that much screen to game
, you don't need that much screen to game
You can game on a fricking 14" screen, but shit looks nicer on a bigger screen. I've got fond memories of sitting in front of my 28" widescreen CRT back in the day, and now I've finally got a screen that's bigger that doesn't look like shit.
>So then? What size?
43" is the minimum, in my opinion. I use that at 2.5 feet, and I wouldn't want to sit any closer to a screen for 16 hours a day.
>Higher ppi sounds great though
It isn't. High DPI ruins content, your eye can only see so much detail per degree. Yes, text will look nicer. But everything else will look worse, because now it's shrunk down.
People who use high DPI use scaling. At 200% scaling, you've converted your shiny new 28" 4k screen into a 28" 1080p one with nicer looking text and a whole host of issues with programs that don't care about scaling.
>43" is the minimum
That's too much, I don't really get why would 4k look bad on a 27', a lot of people get that and seem to love it. What else then?
I want high dpi and IPS because I do a lot of media related stuff
>I don't really get why would 4k look bad on a 27',
What's your current resolution, screen size, and how far away do you sit? (Get a tape measure).
I'll explain to you how shit 4k will look.
I have a 24' 1080p I sit like one arm away
I'll probably just get a 27', what resolution then, 1440p?
I told you to get a tape measure for a reason, moron.
But fine, we'll assume your arm is about 2.5 feet long. At this distance, your screen will have a PPD of 50. A 28" 4k screen at the same distance will have a PPD of 87, so to back convert that onto your current setup, you should move back to about 4.5 feet, or roughly double the distance you're currently sitting away from your screen.
That'll give you an idea of what text will look like on a tiny 4k monitor at 2.5 feet.
so what will you recommend then? I probably don't want to go over 27 or 32.
I do little gaming, I don't really care about it. It's mostly editing media/visualizing pictures that I want. I know I should get an IPS panel at least
>I probably don't want to go over 27 or 32.
Why, did some zoomer tell you that was "too big for a desk"? 43" is smaller than a dual monitor setup.
because I would have to sit from like 4 meters dude, I don't like it
I would have to sit from like 4 meters dude,
No, you wouldn't. I already explained this, moron. You would sit just as far away as you sit right now, only your screen would be much bigger.
At 43" and 2.5 feet away, my screen takes up about 68 degrees of vision horizontally. Your average human has a horizontal vision range of well over double that. Vertically? My monitor is a mere 36 degrees. A vertical 24" monitor takes up 41 degrees of vertical FOV, while a dual 24" setup takes up 80 degrees of horizontal view.
I wouldn't have to move my head at all if I had an 80" monitor at this distance.
what about the color accuracy and stuff?
Are these IPS? Recommend a model and I'll check it out
Color accuracy is a meme. Just calibrate it to your eye.
I sit about 1.5-1.8 meter away from my 43 inch TV and using PC is now more comfier than ever.
So then? What size?
Higher ppi sounds great though
A 3090 can barely run Spiderman at 4k/60fps, and unlike Tv's, monitors look like shit with non-native resolutions.
Might as well set your games to run at 1080p or 1440p then use FSR to scale it up to 4k, it's a simple launch option to set in Steam.
Perfect for movies obviously, probably works with more console port vidya then ultrawide shits. Fractional desktop scaling is kinda shit unless you use 200% scaling, if it's a 27" 4K screen running at virtual 1080p it ain't so bad, on bigger screens it will seem like a waste.
>then use FSR to scale it up to 4k, it's a simple launch option to set in Steam
I need you to tell me about it right now.
Actually that's only on Linux Proton, where you add "WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 %command%" to launch options
There's separate software that can do it on Windows.
>There's separate software that can do it on Windows.
yeah, but it's based on a hack that makes your game run at not-native borderless fullscreen, which not only adds input lag, but also actually lowers performance in some games, which negates the benefit of FSR
as of right now, I'm doing poorman's FSR if I need to run game at resolutions between 4K and 1080p, by running games at lower resolution and injecting CAS through reshade
on AMD you can use FSR on driver level for every game
>on AMD you can use FSR on driver level for every game
how?
It's called Radeon Super Resolution
https://www.amd.com/en/technologies/radeon-super-resolution
It's like FSR, except it works with every game and upscales the whole image, including UI, instead of just 3D environment.
Upgraded from 24 in 1080p to 27 in 1440p, and it's perfect. Everything is just a bit smaller and you have more space. On 4K UIs would be too small and most programs won't scale it for you, top and bottom bar would be too far away, requiring to increase mouse sensitivity which would reduce your precision to click on things that are same amount of pixels. Also, 1440p looks great in games and easily eats all your GPU juice, 4K is only for 60 fps cinematic shit or if you have dual 3090 TIs or something. And 4K won't look better in most games where textures and geometry detail is the limiting factor, I'd rather increase the graphics quality than resolution. N4jxd
Cute captcha, anon.
1080p is ancient technology. Unless you are living in an active war zone you have no valid reason to still be using 1080p
Why aren't you more specific with what you are looking for? If it's just media, why don't you buy a TV? Also, buying a 4k monitor just to play games in 1080p would be just a waste of money.
>Also, buying a 4K monitor just to play games in 1080p would be just a waste of money.
it's called future proofing
I used my 2070S for 2 years on 1080p monitor and only few months ago switched to 4K TV.
But really it's only more recent games that really benefit from 4K. There's really little difference when playing TF2 at 1080p and 4K, other than UI elements getting messed up from lack of good scaling at 4K.
whats the difference with a tv
I don’t play many games really just cs go
or some random stuff. I work with 3D though and photography so I just want it for that.
I don’t want to sit that away either
So you want a 4K monitor just because you have a whim
not really, if it’s better for my use yes if not no
Then why are you asking then
If you're using TV solely for gaming, there's really no much difference nowadays, other than regular difference between monitors, in fact TVs have better quality control.
The main difference is that TVs are bigger (but big monitors still exist), TVs have standardized refresh rates (60Hz or 120Hz), almost always no DisplayPort, and use HDMI's Variable Refresh Rate instead of FreeSync or G-Sync.
Just few years ago, TVs had too much input lag even in game mode (which often also fricked up image quality by using compressed signal), nowadays they're on par with good monitors.
4K is for morons you'll lose 50 percent of your performance while going from 1080p to 1440p you lose at worst 20 fps while looking way better and if you go to 4k over 1440p it looks almost the exact same
Don't be fooled into the lie of moar pixels always better
but 1440p is good then? for what size
27'
Won't be able to go above 60 fps on newer games or do other heavy hitter settings like downsampling.
144hz 1440 p might be better than 4k
LG C2 42”, simple as. Blacked porn has never been so color accurate
I use 1024x768 85hz on my 17" Syncmaster and I literally, truly, unironically need nothing more for gaming. I bought a 144hz 1440p monitor but now I only use it for widescreen shows and porn.
It's huge as frick so you need a big desk.
