game is total ass. My college has a Nintendo club and no one bought it.

Soccer is for Europeans with taste and Americans never loved it. Nintendo fans never really bought soccer games. Next level has always been a great studio.

What did Camelot do to deserve the fate of making half-baked Mario Sports games to fill holes in Nintendo's release schedule?

      >What did Camelot do to deserve the fate of making half-baked Mario Sports games to fill holes in Nintendo's release schedule?
Wel, besides losing employees over time and a tight budget? Takahashi brothers became so creatively bankrupt they came up with the latest golden sun game that pissed off japanese and American fans alike so they went back to shovel ware.

There's always going to be games that get overrated, but there is zero evidence that Nintendo games get unfairly treated compared to any other company.

If you look at first party Nintendo Switch games with 90 or above you have
            BotW
            Mario Odyssey
            Smash Ultimate
            MK8D
            ACNH

These were all massive games loved by tens of millions of people, also with an absolute frickload of content for $60. So which games are you suggesting were hugely overrated by criticis? Because I'm not seeing it.

This would only be a problem if non-nintendo games don't get high ratings they don't deserve, but plenty of such games do.

Mario sells better than actually good games, unfortunately.
Name recognition and branding are about all that matter for sales, so we're stuck with them making uninspired rehashed Mario minigame shlock forever, maybe for the best if you look at dark dawn.

It does and it's about 50/50 between review bombers and genuine complains. Main one being that the game feels incomplete due to Nintendo's new love for that update schedule of their sports games. There's been more characters and stadiums added since then and it does have the same amount of modes as other Strikers games, but whether it's finished is up to you.

Ignore any of the reviews complaining about the game play though, those people are absolute shutters that don't know what they're talking about. It's the best game lay in the series by far.

Strikers felt like the straw that broke the camel's back for Nintendo's "finish it later" games for most people. Not sure why it took the masses 4 years to realize this model sucks ass but better late than never I guess.

        >Strikers felt like the straw that broke the camel's back for Nintendo's "finish it later" games for most people.
They only do this for the Mario Sports games. They have not done this for a single other game on the switch, it's just the sports games. And since sports games are shitty it's pretty easy to avoid.

The only gameplay features added by AC in updates were diving and letting villagers visit your house, the latter being pretty much nothing. So you've got diving. That was "finishing the game"? Aside from that all the updates added was content. It sure did add a lot of content, but the game already had an absurd amount of content. In that sense the updates felt almost meaningless because the player was never going to see all the games content anyway. But I'm sure the reason they did that is because it saves them work for the next game when they can just port all that shit over.

So what you're arguing is that animal crossing is an example of an unfinished game that they later finished with updates but also they didn't finish it.

It's a tactic for all of their online multiplayer games, not just the sports ones.
          >Arms
          >New Horizons
          >every Splatoon game
          >Smash Ultimate
          >both Mario Makers
Not saying every game here has it as bad as the Mario sports games, and I don't mind as much when they do it with a new IP like Splatoon or Arms where there isn't a prior reference point. But New Horizons was missing so much compared to New Leaf, and it was just baffling how Smash launched without home run contest or stage builder. I think Nintendo wants to reap the PR benefits of a live service game without actually supporting a game for an entire generation and/or dipping into MTX, so instead they just cut out a chunk of a game's content and drip feed it over the course of a year. It's happening so frequently and in the same exact way across different devs that I'm inclined to believe it's a mandate now. They saw Splatoon 1's success and decided to slap that model onto anything they could while ignoring the reasons why it worked.

Updating a game doesn't automatically mean it was intentionally released unfinished. Sometimes updating a game is just improving an already finished product.
ARMS, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, Smash and Mario Maker were all complete games at launch. They weren't ridiculously low on content, that's only the sports games. The fact you are listing Splatoon in this category is frankly embarrassing. Splatoon 3 has more content on launch than the vast majority of the switch library.

MPS is fricking fantastic, easily the best game in the series. While yes it is sort of a remake, it's not really because it's "remaking" content from the entire series of games. This makes it stand ahead of even the old games, because it has the best minigames and boards from several games combined together, cutting out a lot of fat.

When I play MPS I am just blown away with every single minigame being a hit. There's so few mediocre ones, and I don't think a single outright bad game at all. And then you have the boards, Space land, Horror Land and Peach's Birthday Cake are all great. I just hope to god they eventually port over Western Land as DLC or a free update or whatever.

Nintendo clearly regards the Mario Sports games as low budget shovelware for children and families and I think they're right to see it that way. How many people are there out there who really want to play a Mario themed golf game?

    >tfw fun arcady style golf, soccer, and other sports games are now dead
I honestly feel like these types of games (genre/type in general) aren’t marketed well enough. I remember a time where shit like this sold like hot cakes because the marketing was solid. Now, barely anyone knows there’s a Mario soccer or golf game.

The genre died off because the officially licensed sports games became much bigger.
This happens with a lot of industries, where eventually the big dog gets so big he pushes all the competition out. There just isn't room for a soccer game to compete with Fifa in the market, and it's hard to even succeed at all.

THATS THE THING THOUGH. Licensed realistic games serve a purpose and a niche, realistic sports games. We have long had “arcade” sports games (hate using that term but I don’t want to use the word “cartoony”). They exist for people to take a break from the realism shit and to have genuine fun. Most of the games that sold mad were these types of games. It wasn’t until the end of the PS2 era/beginning of the PS3 that they started to die off. EA’s best made games that were fun as hell were the arcade stuff like blitz and jam. I mean hell, even hot shots golf/everyone’s golf was amazing too. I feel like companies don’t want to take the risk anymore despite it making financial sense. Do you know how much real sports licenses and cars cost? Astronomically fricking high. We had a ex-developer here a few years back for some game/publisher that talked how bitter he was for the arcade racing genre dying off. I can’t blame the guy, why buy a license and be at the mercy of some dipshit who can pull the plug on your contract at any time?

          Anonymous

What you're wrongly assuming is that people buying sports games are mostly doing it for the gameplay. In reality, most people buying a soccer game are buying it because they like watching soccer. So the branding is what sells the game, meaning that most customers wont go out and buy both Fifa and an arcade soccer game because the difference in genre doesn't matter to them.

Why do people care so much about the Mario Sports games?
Sports videogames fundamentally make no sense. The entire appeal of a sport is the physical aspect. Sports are all really simple and basic in how they're designed, the challenge comes from running faster, jumping higher and generally pushing your body to its limits. But you cant do that in a video game. Youre just left with simplistic basic gameplay.

I will never not be mad that they hyped up Tennis Aces' story mode as a return to form to the RPG style. Then it came out and it was just a generic world map/level based campaign with a tacked on levelling mechanic for the rackets that felt like it made no difference at all.

The idea that New Horizons is unfinished because it doesn't have some of the features of New Leaf has to be the most moronic and uninformed opinion I see on gaming forums.

Is Mario Odyssey unfinished because it doesn't have FLUDD? Is Pikmin 3 unfinished because it doesn't have caves? Was Mario Kart 8 unfinished because it doesn't have a single player mode?

Sequels are not mandated to carry over every single feature from their predecessors. New Horizons replaced some of the content collection based features from New Leaf with customization features. This is what sequels do, they take the previous game and change it.
