The openess of gameplay and seeing numbers go up.
By your pick, the only real RPGs are FF7 remake/rebirth, Pokemon and KIngdom hearts.
DQ and persona games are stupidly easy and have almost no real customization.

Pokemon is also stupidly easy though.

      >The openess of gameplay
huh? JRPGs are typically linear as frick and don't allow much choice

He means with stuff like job classes, party members, movesets, equipment, item choices, etc. You can often choose to approach a fight in a variety of ways.

        >reading comprehension is hard!
openess of gameplay = depth of the GAMEPLAY. Not the map design. And yes, there are exceptions to the linearity aspect as well within JRPGs.

What "type" of games exactly? Which ones have you played?

There's roughly as much variation within JRPGs as there's between Doom and Call Of Duty when it comes to FPS games.
FF7 demake is utmost trash. Literal modern AAA goyslop ubishit with a cosplay mask put on.

For most other games out there, the main appeal are often the cast and story, whereas many people do honestly enjoy the grinding and the chill turn-based combat.

      Is the yakuza series jrpg?

Formerly they were 3D beat'em up games with various RPG-like elements (upgrade trees, equipment, side quests...) and small but jam-packed mini-open world (often a specific Tokyo city block).

Then the Y7 (now "Like A Dragon", closer to the franchise's OG Jap name) changed the formula into a full-blown 4-homies-inna-row JRPG, with turn-based combat, job systems and whatnot.

Don't bother playing Final Fantasy. All of these games except VII OG, VIII, IX and X are utter garbage. Play Shin Megami Tensei or something like Parasite Eve. Oh and btw, don't get memed by the idea of a "real time action JRPG" because those don't exist, either it's a full blown action game like Kingdom Hearts or NieR, or a dogshit Ubisoft-tier game like the FF7 remake.

It's one of the absolutely worst FF games ever made. Story and gameplay are wet diarrhea.

They were the big open world games of their day. No other genre gave the sense of adventure you'd get running around the world map finding secret areas. And that first time you launch your airship/dragon/whatever flying mechanic was such a high. The freedom to go anywhere you want.

Also one of the few early genres to have a big story. It's normal now to the point we have movie games where the game part is forgotten, but there was a time having a story beyond a few cutscenes or even just what was in the manual was unusual. At least on consoles. PC had adventures games afterall and their own RPGs.

Like RPGs, they use gameplay elements to convey the story (rather than building a story to fit gameplay elements).
Unlike Classic RPGs, they tend to be more linear and thus the game mechanics can get much more specialized for telling a specific story whereas CRPGs tend to have a single set of general mechanics that apply to everything, such as 5e for DnD in BG3

No matter if not every JRPG story is a masterpiece, almost all of them manage to capture the feeling of going on an adventure with your bros. Sure, some open world action games also offer the same adventure feeling, but you spend 90% of the time alone.

    Escapism + power fantasy
    >See: Star Ocean 2, Final Fantasy 5, Chrono Trigger
Most modern JRPGs take away the power fantasy part and they're just chores with story
    >Persona 5, Octopath 2, Yakuza: Like A Dragon
If it requires multiple playthroughs or doesn't let you powerlevel, it's garbage basically.

    >What if you want to feel like you're gaining an anime power fantasy, but you're bad at pressing buttons at the correct time?
That's the appeal of jrpg. But a true weeb without motoric nerve dysfunction prefer something like action games, FG, rhytm, shmup, etc
