    X is the best but you should probably save it for later or you won't be able to enjoy the others as much.
    IMO you should work your way up and play
    IV -> V -> VI -> IX -> X
    Ignore the rest

        NTA Tactics is a fantastic game and deserves its status as a legendary entry into the series. But come on man, that game is a lot for a brand new player. The most fun character builds require prior knowledge of classes and abilities and important plot points are in a data you can very easily miss. There's a reason why "Draw Your Sword Ramza" is a meme that's persisted to this day.

            How was Weigraf supposed to predict Ramza would scream at nothing for 5 minutes before punching him in the face at Mach 5?

    IV is a good entry point. It's simple, easy to learn, the story is good and introduces all mechanics in a comprehensible manner.

    These games are too linear. they're a product of their time, but honestly, not even good at that.
    I liked Radiant Historia more than I liked any FF.

      Linearity is exactly part of the reason they're good. The problem with modern games is that they're all open world and they feel aimless. Most Final Fantasy games tell a coherent story with a three-act structure that can't be replicated in an open world.
      As for Radiant Historia, it has a great Shimomura OST and style (the original at least, I hate what they did in the remake) but the characters are all incredibly forgettable

        Final Fantasy games are almost always hard carried by their characters. They're not super complicated but they're always incredibly endearing. It's probably why you don't really see discussion of games prior to 4 and why 7 blew the frick up.

          7 blew up because square spent an incredibly stupid amount of money marketing it
          you couldn't watch tv for 20 minutes without seeing a commercial for this game. if you weren't there you won't understand

            *sony
            they really wanted to push it to boost the PS1 sales, it also helps it was the first worldwide release for FF
