Haven't checked in on that in since the early access started but gotta say I was pretty impressed with the bard implementation. I just hope BG3 is decent - I hated the D:OS games.
>I hated the D:OS games.
I find them sort of similar though? You can tell its a Larian game still, still turn-based as per D&D, only difference is limited to action/bonus/move instead of tons of AP.
I just hated every fight in DOS ends up with me throwing a barrel of oil to start a fire or some looney toons shit. I think environmental effects are neat but with DOS it's saturated throughout the game. I haven't played through all of the EA for Baldurs Gate but I haven't had the same experience.
It actually feels like a tabletop game >"role playing" cantrips/spells that are totally useless or unavailable in every other crpg are actually selectable and integrated with dialogue choices and world interactions >proper use of verticality and positioning so you have a lot more tactical elements to think of >stealth reasonably integrated and based on lighting, which is interactable e.g. bonfires, candles, torches, etc. >using the environment to your advantage and combining spells creatively e.g. "create or destroy water" + ray of frost to create an ice surface but not as overboard with it like in the Divinity games >dialogue choices vary heavily not just on race and class but also your information, lots of skill checks and ways to alter whether you have advantage or not >can select different party members to take over the conversation instead of your own character just being the universal leader constantly as in 99% of other RPGs >combat is actually fun and Larian is working on making it not bog-down with waiting for enemy moves (I think they're working on a way to make large mobs take their turn simultaneously as an option)
It's only act 1 so far but what they have is genuinely good. Most of the hate towards it is either people who have a stick up their butt that it's not rtwp or they're just trying to flex about how cool they are for hating 5e.
its absolutely abysmal and looks and plays like dragon quest inquisition, play Pathfinder instead when the Enhanced edition comes out next month, Pirate the dlc
Wait for Colony Ship RPG. It'll be a while yet.
Best overall is BG1+2 and the Big World mod. You've gotta use the old gog forums and wayback machine to get the full modlist together, though.
there's pathfinder games but i can only recommend them if you have serious case of autism
game gives you so many options that you will likely reroll you character for like 7 times, play with that character for 7 hours and then reroll again
>but 1 was really boring
Eternity 1 suffered from cramming all the kino shit in the last act of the game. the reveal, defining your history, previous lives, meeting the Gods, killing Kyros or whatever the villain's name was, all kino shit. the rest is a slog though. and I feel like the game only really gets interesting when you meet the Grieving Mother and get an understanding of the Hollowborn situation.
In a response to a critique of PoE1 he made on tumblr here: https://jesawyer.tumblr.com/post/161883319926/destroy-that-douchebag-jeff-vogel-now
>We didn’t really have time to do serious editing passes on anything outside of a few major dialogues. Both at Black Isle and Obsidian, the designers have had a tendency to overwrite. Overwriting in itself is not bad, but only if editing is a normal part of the development process that follows the overwriting. Not enough time was allocated to editing on Pillars of Eternity.
I think it's pretty clear that it was made to capture new audiences. All the 2A nerds are dead or are doing OSR. All the 3.5 nerds moved to PF. 4 was a wash. 5 was palatable 4e. This era of Roll20, Foundry, Critical Role - it's all developed the current demo and it shows. Less focus on the mechanics of adventure, more focus on "big moments" and roleplay.
Not sure about the best, but in terms of newer crpgs
Pillars of Eternity 1-2
Divinity Original Sin 2
Expeditions Rome
Tyranny
Shadowrun Dragonfall
Baldur's Gate 3
Underrail
Black Geyser is also pretty decent and it got a ton of post-launch support, with some major patches coming up that will allow you to create a custom party Icewind Dale style, more extensive romances and companion quests, and some other quality of life improvements.
Pathfinder as a setting is a pale imitation of DnD, and as games they're just discount Baldur's Gate but with some of the most terrible writing in a video game and more autism.
Let's not pretend Baldur's Gate ever had good writing. It was 90% dad jokes and the only reason anyone ever thought otherwise is because of BG2's incredible voice actors carrying the otherwise forgettable script.
>and the only reason anyone ever thought otherwise is because of BG2's incredible voice actors carrying the otherwise forgettable script.
I consider BG2 to be a huge mess of a game with one of the most overrated villains of all time, so yeah, I generally agree. But BG1 had pretty good writing. Granted, it's not perfect, and it had its fair share of cringe, but I'd take that over Pathfinder any day.
Playing ttrpgs in one-shots or short campaigns (3-5 sessions) with normies is the best way to experience the hobby. Playing with smelly nerds trying to be relevant suck. Also: >D&D
eeewww
Playing B/X with normies is the best. They don't know anything so I can just tell them it's the same D&D everyone else is playing and they're all for it.
>They don't know anything so I can just tell them it's the same D&D everyone else is playing and they're all for it
This is a big one, I've run unpopular systems with many normie groups, it's always great fun.
you need to have friends or at least be able to deal with people to do that though
Lift weights, improve your hygiene, get rid of graphic t-shirts, have you clothing tailored for a good fit. Won't solve all your problems but the Halo Effect is real anon, take advantage of it.
>new
None of them are good but probably pathfinder >overall
It's still baldurs gate 2, fallout 1 or temple of Elemental Evil depending on what you're after.
Some older crpgs with mods are awesome. Icewind dale's Improved Heart of Fury mod (by Olvynchuru) really stands out. Not quite like Sword Coast Stratagems for Baldurs Gate 2, but its got lots of charm (and difficulty, especially trying to solo it). For newer games, I had a lot of fun trying to solo the endless dungeon dlc in Pathfinder Kingmaker too.
Witcher: EE
Baldur's Gate 3 and it isn't even finished.
Haven't checked in on that in since the early access started but gotta say I was pretty impressed with the bard implementation. I just hope BG3 is decent - I hated the D:OS games.

Give me a quick rundown why is it good. I just can't imagine 5th edition being any fun in vidya.
It'a got a qt twink to frick
Solasta is pretty fun. The multiplayer aspects of Solasta/DOS2/BG3 is what makes them more digestible to me, though
They homebrew alot of stuff to keep up the pace and give you more tools.
It actually feels like a tabletop game

Did you actually play EITHER game you Black person?
How does a beholder have sex?
they're content to watch
they touch pupils
They literally imagine offspring and it happens/
I like Divinity 2
PoE is boring
Wait for Colony Ship RPG. It'll be a while yet.

Really like it so far. The amount of builds you can make is a lot of fun.
POE, Pathfinder, the iso Shadowrun games have all been p good anon
there's pathfinder games but i can only recommend them if you have serious case of autism
game gives you so many options that you will likely reroll you character for like 7 times, play with that character for 7 hours and then reroll again
Pathfinder: Kingmaker is enjoyable if you have a lot of patience...and save often.
Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2 are also nice
This. I've been playing original BD DE and I have to save scum so much.
> Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2 are also nice
idk about 2
but 1 was really boring
>but 1 was really boring

>killing Kyros
Kyros is in Tyranny. The guy you're thinking of is Thaos.
same shit different pile tbh
Whatever you say
No, it suffered from Obsidian not managing their dev time properly enough to allow for an editing pass. Sawyer said as much.
>Sawyer said as much.
Where?

PoE1 has the worst writing I've ever encountered in a video game.
You haven't played many games then, or crpgs for that matter.
PoE 1 and 2, Pathfinder (both), NWN2 because MotB is pretty cool and SoZ was kinda fun, some modules like Live Forever were really interesting.
don't know what else to tell you. I haven't tried BG3 yet but I will.
5e was a mistake
it was made to cater to the aging DnD demographic that doesn't have time for the autism of the old editions anymore.
pretty sure that the aging demographic, aka grognards, hate 5th edition, and it's the zoomers who play it
grognards dont buy books they pirate them from the trove
not always true, i like have physical books for in person sessions
not necessarily. Plus the trove is kill, no?
trove dead but /tg/ still maintains the archives, it's just not all consolidated anymore

CRPG are bad.
Just play an actual ttrpg.
>beholder
>that fricking big
moronic artist
any crpgs that let you play a beast race? pathfinder wotr lets you play as a kitsune, but i don't know of any other recent ones.
>new
age of decadence or underrail
>overall
fallout 1 or bg2 I'd reckon
solasta
completely shits all over baby's gate 3
Not sure about the best, but in terms of newer crpgs

whats the difference between 3.5e and pathfinder
also any crpgs that are like them
Like 3% of the rules, that's it. They are interchangeable.
Disco Elysium.
it's a VN with "rpg elements" so it doesn't count
More like "point&click adventure game with RPG elements".
