This. 1 is perfectly crafted, endlessly replayable and doesn't waste time.

4 has a really slow start but it has the most to do and still provides plenty of room to optimize.

3 is just like a less focused more linear version of 1.

and 2 is a fine game but most of your playtime is spent slowly scouting dungeons for random dropping bombs instead of time management.

the dungeons were my favorite part though because you had to go through them meticulously. you were very rarely given the opportunity to get more pikmin in them, so you had to be extra careful. if you frick up once you might have to start all over (this tense feeling is why roguelites are popular)
unless you savescum which eliminates all the tension, but where's the fun in that

          >unless you savescum which eliminates all the tension, but where's the fun in that
where's the fun in re-doing the easy part of the first 7 floors to get to teh hard last couple floors?

I can't say I'm a fan of the dungeons because of the gameplay change it imposes. It's something I'm all for as a special mode, but not something that is a significant chunk of the main game, especially with the purple farming cancer for a single treasure at the end of the game. I think I had 14 reds at the end of the game because I did not have the time to farm them since I was doing an 8 day run, and they all practically got thrown into candypop buds.

I'm one of those weirdos who prefer caves and treasure hunting.
Also I think seeing real brands reinforced the whole "abandoned planet" aesthetic which is the most interesting part of the setting.

is that a mod for 2? I don't remember that treasure.

I don't mind the caves in theory but the fact that in 2 they are randomized and time freezes when you're in them goes against the core gameplay of Pikmin. Plus because you can take all the time you want there is no risk or squad management involved, you just scout the whole floor with your captain to bait the Volatile Dweevils and then you take your entire squad to pick off enemies who die instantly because you are throwing 50 Purples at them.

      >Also I think seeing real brands reinforced the whole "abandoned planet" aesthetic which is the most

1 was the only good game aesthetically because it was kind of spooky and ambiguous. Like yes it's obviously supposed to be Earth and there are paper bags and rusted cans around, but there's also this kind of alien geometry to the landscape not to mention to bizarre enemies, so it makes you think what happened? Is this a far-future extinct Earth that has has other visitors/mutations since the humans left?

In every sequel they just go way too hard on the Earth stuff, they make the planet look recently or even currently populated which just makes it feel weird that you never actually see signs of a human presence. 4 is the worst in this regard, what am I supposed to think about a spotless modern house full of pristine, working appliances but with guinea pig sized creatures roaming around everywhere? Like who lives here? They are obviously keeping the place clean but then why is it full of animals? Why do we never see them during the day or at night? There is just no more thought to the world any more beyond "hehehe isn't it fun being a tiny guy in a big human world"

havent played 4. 1 was pretty good but it was the pilot of the series, 2 is where they nailed it. 3 they reached too hard, the best part of 2 was that only the overworld exploration was timed, so when you did find a cave and you got set up for it there was no added stress of speed running it. the difficulty was perfectly reasonable for a nintendo game and it was also reasonable to go through the entire game without losing a single pikmin, because i could not handle having even a single one die for any reason. 3 also reached too hard in adding a third captain and making it more micro focused between 3 different captains. i also just didnt like the worlds as much, while they were prettier, the layout was just not as good as 2

There is no "best" game. All of them have play differently with accompanying strengths and weaknesses.
    That being said 3 > 1 > 4 > 2

4 has a lot of quality of life updates that make it easy to get into.

I would not call the auto lock-on or capped pikmin throws "quality of life" in most circumstances.

3 Deluxe had a perfect lock on system and I have no idea why they overtuned it in 4 by making it automatic. It hurts way more than it helps

I'm actually fine with the changes and I would keep them if Nintendo updated the game to have more regular Pikmin control options.
The problem is that Nintendo never fricking added any of the old schemes back, especially when Pikmin 3 had a plethora of options.

It is an extradimensional entity projecting itself into our world from another plane. It is a manifestation of fear, or manifests itself in the presence of fear. Purple Pikmin are notably immune to panic (fear). This is why they are able to kill it.

        > It is a manifestation of fear, or manifests itself in the presence of fear. Purple Pikmin are notably immune to panic (fear)
This isn't accurate but it is better than the canonical explanation that Purple Pikmin are so fat they emit gravitational waves
