What's the best rain effect in videogames?

What's the best rain effect in videogames? Is there such a thing as good rain and bad rain, especially these days or is it just a "nice to have"?

    No hint of irony, WoW

In my experience TES rain is terribly underwhelming without mods to make dramatically increase the effects.
Otherwise, it gets super comfy, especially with additional mods to see outdoors.

I need to look into what mods to use with Skyrim VR. I imagine the porn ones don't really work, so I should find out which gameplay/immersive/rain ones there are. At the very least, one where you can see your body. The last one I tried was super fricked...

If your game doesn't have wet surfaces it's automatically shit tier rain. Just fricking with the way the specular map is rendered is such a simple thing but makes such a huge difference.

Playing the gears of war rain level was next level shit. Probably looks like crap today but back then it looked so wet!

      This
Unironically BOTW is the only 'recent' game to get the visuals right when it comes to surfaces
      >animated ripples/splashes on horizontal surfaces, pours down vertical surfaces
      >properly occluded by anything obstructing it
      >even has a small visible 'halo' of splashes coming off the surfaces of objects being hit by raindrops
Basically no other game bothers with such simple but satisfying visual touches.

The one I remember as being really impressive when it came out was Stalker Clear Sky. There were individual rain drop splashes and only uncovered surfaces would be wet, and water would stream down the sides of objects.
Another game with really great rain effects (and terrible everything else) was Homefront: The Revolution, which I think was like a CryEngine showcase.
I also think Zelda BotW/TotK deserve recognition for having the wet surface effects, but also having flood plains that fill up while it's raining, and also for having a really impressive rolling sheets of rain in the distance effect. There's a ton of attention to detail there.
There's also lots of bad rain effects in video games. Skyrim's rain drove me insane because they were too lazy to figure out occlusion so rain just fell through buildings and bridges and it looked terrible.

Yeah, TOTK really surprised me there. They were quite thoughtful.

Nintendo's attention to detail here is wild
Run through patches of leaves while it's dry. Leaf particles dance as you expect. While it rains however, not so much. They went above and beyond to make the player's interaction with the world was pervasive.

Same. One of few games I have refunded, and negatively reviewed.
I often take the dive on steeply discounted games. Every single time they at least have something novel or interesting (if ultimately flawed) to have justified the handful of dollars and couple hours.
But never have I encountered a game that seemed so actively intent on prevent and discourage me from actually playing it. And it did it all so aggressively within the first 2 hours sufficiently enough to drive me to claim a refund.

Homefront feels like the utter definition of a failed franchise, THQ made it out of desperation to attempt to save their company by appealing to the cowadoody dude bros and it failed so hard that people only remember it for having that spinoff game with cool rain effects. Its kinda sad.

Definitely modded; Oblivion never had any backpacks, and those robes are much too fancy for vanilla Oblivion.

I quite liked the stormy vibes of the Stoneship Age in Realmyst Masterpiece edition. Unfortunately they changed it in the 2021 remake to a calm sunset, which is still nice, but when I think of Stoneship I think of this storm.

Watch_Dogs had some pretty kino rain. Especially when you could see weather forecasts in the game world on LED screens, and then watch the rain move in from the distance.
