I think it's Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals.

The gameplay is great in and out of battle, most JRPGs of the era call it quits after they have a battle system. This one basically has a 2D Zelda for dungeons, with puzzles and tools, while also having encounters in dungeons be if you actually touch them (so not random).

Music's incredible, characters and story is really good, graphics are pretty good too. Just a game where it feels 8 to 9/10 in every single area, where other games that might also match up could at least be a 6 in one of the other areas (especially dungeon designs). It even has really great optional content with a fullblown 100 floor mystery dungeon challenge where your characters are deleveled and unequipped of everything going into it.

First time i actually describe why Lufia 2 is great. Always thought it was a throwaway overpraised snes jrpg like BoF2 but now that i read your post, i think i'll give it a try.

Cool to hear, hope you enjoy it. I think it way outdoes BoF2, I'd compare it more to DQ5 and Chrono Trigger but with those 2D Zelda dungeons. Funny enough, it even have a monster-raising system similar to DQ5, and their special move system is one of the better limit break systems I've seen.

Instead of just having character-based super attacks, you get moves from the gear you have equipped, and the gauge for it carries over between battles. Gives a fun incentive to use worse gear for better moves (like some party-wide buff or heal on a warrior), or a downside to better gear that doesn't even have a special move.

Very overrated game, the battle mechanics are extremely bland and the dungeons become monotonous very quickly. It really needed some kind of presentation or storytelling flair, because without it the constant cycle of town, dungeon, identical town, identical dungeon, etc. becomes very dull.

is lufia 1 worth playing? I hate jumping right into a sequel

Not really, but Lufia 2 is a prequel by 100 years so you're good to start there.

Lufia 1's best part far and away is the opening, and it's specifically because it opens with the end of Lufia 2 with zero context, fully playable with this cast of level 50+ characters you don't know in the middle of the climax, then it skips forward 100 years afterwards for the rest of the game to take place. Unfortunately, the rest of Lufia 1 feels like an RPG Maker template, 2 is an insane step up in quality.

Hell the start of 1 spoils the last hour of 2

As cliche'd as it is, FF6 and CT probably. Though i absolutely adore Illusion of Gaia.

I like Lufia 2 but i hate push block puzzles, and that's what 99% of that game is.

Quintet's worst ARPG. There's always one idiot in these threads that likes it for some reason.

FF6 or Chrono Trigger is the actual correct answer.

Weren't the first two BoF really unintuitive and padded to hell?

Can't say anything about the first one, but yeah, second one is kusoge tier save for a couple great moments.

1 has 2 major padding roadblocks: getting a goldbar, and getting another goldbar. Both of them happen around midpoint of the game and you're forced to grind shitty monsters hoping a gold slime during random encounters shows up to make the grind for the story locked money sink item to go by faster. The first time around isn't so bad as there's side quests you can do around town to meet you halfway to getting 65k, the second time around its just stupid. Aside from that, there's a cheap a item players can buy in bulk, mrbl3, that stops all random encounters while its in effect, so the only other downside to the game is how slow everything is compared to modern games

2 has one of the worst monster encounter rates in existence, and the devs, in their infinite wisdom, got rid of mrbl3. There's a lot of ideas that the devs were really throwing around, like building your own town or altering characters with the shaman system that ended up becoming the dragon gene system in 3, but the core experience is assloads of random encounters
