Tried to tell someone that the underlying battle mechanics of a game were good but were hampered by the game not giving you suitable enemies. He said that if the enemies aren't good it means the underlying mechanics can't be good.
Another time I tried to explain that GBA soundtracks have good composition but they are stuck on a bad instrument (soundchip.) Guy argued with me that I wasn't making sense and music was either good or bad.

The GBA soundchip is definitely unorthodox, but it could be used extremely well. The problem is few composers actually bothered to write for it specifically and either expected it to handle their normal style just fine or didn't care enough to adapt since it was only a handheld. The Phoenix Wright soundtracks are some of the best chiptunes ever created and they used the GBA soundchip.
Oh absolutely. If anybody knew how to make the GBA sing it was Capcom. But on the whole the vast majority of developers did not use it correctly
