I think it's fun. I was put off by the artstyle as well, but I eventually got over it. Mecha and Sand are basically broken. Obtaining the gears are easier, and being able to bring items into levels makes it far easier.
It's RTDL but with more content so it's great by default, outlines would have been more appreciated in Star Allies though since some bosses make it hard to keep track of yourself with all the shit happening at once

Helpers. Star Allies didn’t do it right.
FL's Upgrades, except there isn't meant to be an outright superior upgrade and you can toggle on the classic hat even when upgraded. More upgrades that use more inputs to fit in more moves like Morpho Sword of course, but only some.
Combo abilities would either necessitate a return to the "one button" format of movelists or a significant cut in the number of abilities, and I'm not really happy with either (the latter point in particular was my least favorite aspect of Forgotten Land even if it as understandable).
I'd have to go with Upgraded abilities, but largely on the caveat that they come with a general moveset complexity bump from Forgotten Lands' set.

I'd assume that this will happen. Most of that dev time for FL was getting 3D just right and getting those dozen abilities working properly within it. The next mainline game (I'd assume 2025) will probably expand on them and throw in a handful more since they don't need to reinvent the core gameplay this time.

honestly? I didn't mind FL's small selection of abilities because while they tended to be shallower than the typical 2D abilities, the few moves they had had a good amount of depth (Needle was insane for example), and the game really tested your mastery of them, particularly in the treasure roads
and you get this sense that your abilities get STRONGER throughout the game, as if you're leveling them up, it's a very satisfying progression

I would also like to see Magolor Epilogue's combo system in the main game, rewarding the player for chaining between enemies and avoiding damage. how it would reward you I wouldn't know (more damage, perhaps?), but it would help Hispanice up the combat a ton

Discitese. A scholarly imp that converts Dreamland into a giant library. He captured the creatures of dreamland into his living encyclopedia to further his studies and learning. The game would task Kirby with climbing a giant bookcase, with each shelf being a different world, and each book being a different level. The overall style of the game would be a pop up book. You fight with pure physical force because that's the antithesis of brains
Blowout Blast is entirely combo-based, but it also doesn’t have abilities.
It's funny to see how much DNA of a really quality hardcore action game is hidden away in the past 15 years of Kirby games, mostly in boss rushes. I have joked in the past that Kumazaki (or whoever is doing the game design in all of mainline under him) really wants to let loose on a new IP, and Magolor Epilogue is basically that being confirmed to me. It's so easy to get long combo strings once you're upgraded, and you don't even have his full movelist from Star Allies at that point.
If Hal wanted to do a new IP they just would, like with BoxBoy or Part Time UFO.
They have the creative freedom to do whatever.
Upgrading abilities has a lot of potential and seems reasonable to achieve. Squeak Squad already did it at a smaller scale, and it was really neat to have copy abilities all have unlockable new powers or damage buffs later on.
Combo abilities are easily the coolest idea there, but it's kind of improbable to make each ability have a fleshed out moveset.
Would be neat to see how some of the weapon/class abilities mix together, like sword/ninja = samurai , beam/fighter = dbz laser shit, sword/spear = Naginata

Call me basic as fuck but sword. It's simple and effective. Conceptually I like ESP but they gave it the most boring and barebones moveset possible. There's so much they could have did with psychic powers.

I've been enjoying the Ice ability in Nightmare in Dreamland, when hit with it enemies freeze into a block and can be sent flying to hit other enemies with.

Very odd choice frankly but whatever, both sword andhammer have running attacks, burning could have been that for fire and freeze for ice.
It's a weird timeline thing. In early games, Ice/Freeze, Burning/Fire, and Beam/Laser were separate. But then in SSU they got paired up.
The GBA games were based on pre-SSU mechanics, so we had modern games where the powers were separate. But then the more recent Kirby games seem to based on SSU mechanics rather than the old Dreamland mechanics.

Plus NiDL was just KA remade so it made sense to be that way. Amazing Mirror though was more Super Star based I think.
