Definitely Volo in Legends Arceus. I have a policy of never using items, and it came down to my Sneasler against his full health Origin Giratina. I knew I couldn't OHKO it, so I needed a Dire Claw status. Sure enough, I made Giratina drowsy, and it couldn't attack, which let me use Agile->Strong Shadow Claw to finish it off.
It was especially cool because Sneasler was a random encounter shiny.

Fighting Red for the first time in HGSS will always stick out in my brain. I thought it was a cool idea to fight a past player character as a kid. Plus just the climb through Mt. Silver after conquering both Johto and Kanto really hyped me up for what was to come.

Genuinely my favorite fight in the series

Red in Gold. As a kid, there wasn't a lot of easily accessed info about the games, so no one was expecting it. And I got there before the rest of my friends. The build up to finding him and all the reverence they give it was crazy. It's not even that challenging a fight, but everything else about it is so fricking cool you couldn't help but be totally into it.

/vp/ will be mad about it but I like seeing people find joy in clutching and beating their final boss in newer games.

I enjoy clutch beating the newer games if only because I intentionally under level myself for the fights. I have no fricking idea why people complain that these games are too easy while simultaneously leveling themselves above the trainers they're fighting. Seriously, if you want the fight to be harder, just don't over level idiot. It's a lot more fun that way. I guarantee a lot of those people would complain that a game was somehow too hard if a champion were actually given level 100 Pokemon. Because once you're on an even playing field, those other trainers CAN stomp a lot of the people who complain.

This is why I judge people who b***h about the games being too easy but their HoF time is like 40+ hours.

Self imposed challenges might make for a more difficult experience, but it doesn't say anything to the quality of the game. Even if you "can" make it more difficult for yourself, the fact remains that the intended vanilla experience is going to be one where you're guided towards being a more appropriate level, and that's what people are going to judge the game on

The intended vanilla experience is using all the X and healing items to brute force yourself against any obstacle you encounter.

            Kids don't use X items.

it's not a self imposed challenge, it's just less grinding

I hadn't played Pokemon in years, nearly a decade, then someday I decided to play USUM via an emulator, went through most of the game blind and after hours of what felt like a big nothing burger I stumble into Ultra Space after the altar cutscene, "a city that's just a corridor, wow real good job gamefreak", then it appears in all it's majestic glory and that infamous theme starts playing, the most kino fight I've seen in a Pokemon game in a very long time commences.

Wtf. This is so hard for me to imagine. By the time BW2 is out, people have much better games to care about than pokemon. Pokemania was only a thing because there weren't many better games to care about at the time.
