What's your favorite retro Kart Racer? Posted on May 19, 2023 by Anonymous What's your favorite retro Kart Racer?
That one ngl, the genre peaked at CTR for that generation at least. Not really a fair fight since it came out a couple year after the main competition and it's a barefaced knockoff, but it's still a remarkable game.
The courses are densely packed with detail, obstacles and curvature, the racers are the best-balanced, the items are fair, the driving is bouncy, vertical and high-skill, and it's a graphically impressive game for a PSX title.
Pretty much this, even when playing alone the game had a lot of content something that many retro kart games lacked.
The way they handled the single player campaign was fucking brilliant for a kart racer.
Too many kart racing games focus on the multiplayer, which is surprisingly one of CTR's biggest weaknesses because the PSX required an additional prehipheral for more than 2 players.
I played the fuck out of the single player mode but still just a fraction of the time I managed to sink into the multiplayer stuff; at the time you just couldn't beat it as the perfect hangout game. I got my multitap with the CTR bundle but I'm not sure I got more mileage on it from another game. Blaze and Blade of all things maybe kek
Diddy Kong Racing.
mk64 just for all the fun I had in college playing it
but I'm sure there's an argument for why diddy kong racings and ctr are technically better or what not
Well they're certainly better on a technical level, but the track design is also a couple notches above imo.
The japanese version specifically, since it has more content and less grinding.
like what? I'm googling and I see it's definitely less grindy, but i cant find anything about more content
You can acess Highway Star Road after clearing all the mirror races, Atlus removed it for some reason when localizing.
>Atlus removed it for some reason
What are you smoking? It's there for me at least.
Many western players probably didn't make it there because of the insane requirements for the last level
I loved South Park Rally as a kid, but I haven't played it in almost 20 years
had n64 one and always played as terrance and phillip
Probably Crash Team Racing or Mario Kart Double Dash.
Crash Team Racing is not only the greatest Kart Racer ever, but the greatest racing game ever.
Is it also the greatest Crash Bandicoot game ever? The answer for me is unironically yes.
For me, it's Ripper Roo.
Content: DKR > CTR > MK64
Music: DKR >MK64 > CTR
Gameplay: CTR > MK64 > DKR
SOVL: MK64 > DKR > CTR
CTR being "wacky":
>hit any medium-sized bump in the road, press jump and bounce high into the air over obstacles and scenery, then land and get a boost just for doing it
Mariokart being "wacky":
>something miserable and show-stopping happens to you at random outside of your control
i don't know how anyone can compare another kart racer with CTR
I couldn't handle this one's remake, the characters feel heavier, they changed the levels' collision way too much and you can't go apeshit in tracks like sewer speedway anymore because of that. I'm just waiting for the decomp and the online mod to be finished (both being made by the same team)
The difficulty curve is fucked to all hell too, going straight from easy mode that a kid could beat blindfolded to a medium mode that requires you to be an autistic speedrunner keeping the shitty new blue flare mechanic going for the entire race. In the original, all you needed even for hard mode was to get regular boosts from slide turbos and jumping off ramps. The unlock methods are far worse too, and you can't even bypass them with codes like in the original.
>to a medium mode that requires you to be an autistic speedrunner keeping the shitty new blue flare mechanic going for the entire race.
You don't need to keep blue fire like that unless you're doing the harder Time Trial ghosts. Also the blue fire mechanic technically isn't new, super turbo speed existed in PS1 CTR, though the next boost you did cancelled super turbo speed in PS1 CTR.
Idk if Re-Volt counts but I'm going with that
Crash Nitro Kart
I don't get the hate for CNK at all, every time I play the game (often times back to back with CTR) it just feels like an as good but too short CTR sequel
>I don't get the hate
It's pretty much the controls.
The GBA version is unironically a better game
Awful voices (why the fuck does Crash sound like Mickey Mouse?) and uninspired new characters (looking at you, Papu Papu but monkey, generic shark, toilet humor Shrek and dog Shrek. Velo, the Norms and the robot were good, though, to be fair).
The physics in this game are so stiff and unrewarding. Also a lot of the tracks are shameless clones from CTR. A shame, it had potential.
it's okay. doesn't have the "GOTTA GO FAST" feel of ctr, but it's alright. i like the aesthetics of this game. still felt like classic crash (thanks to VV getting some help from charles zembillas, no doubt) before twinsanity came out and made everything all retarded and vulgar.
Nitro Kart is good and I don't get the hate 🙁
I agree, every teenage liked that game.
How are these 3 games different? Are they all ports or did crash really get 3 separate racers?
CTR is the original, CNK is a sequel by different devs that follows the same formula and mostly plays the same as CTR, they didn't quite get everything perfect but it's not that bad.
I'm not that familiar with CTTR because it sucks and I didn't enjoy it but it's more of its own style of kart racing game with its own gimmicks, it doesn't really follow the CTR formula.
why the fuck were N. Brio's beakers in CTR, but he wasn't
That's always been weird to me as well, especially when almost everyone else from the original trilogy made it in, apart from Komodo Moe and Koloa Kong.
>CNK is a sequel by different devs that follows the same formula and mostly plays the same as CTR
>mostly plays the same as CTR
They tried to copy CTR but they fucked up the physics and the turbo mechanics. It just isn't as smooth. You'll understand if you play it.
>You'll understand if you play it.
I try not to. How can they fuck up so badly when there's literally the blueprint in front of you of how to do it properly?
>transparent Platinum case
I only remember silver cases for those, what country is that CNK from ?
Double Dash ez win
i just hate the physics, the drifting is so fucked in this game
>A lot of mid tracks
>Locking special items behind character selection creating an automatic tier list
Trash, outclassed by Mario Kart on the Wii in every way.
Lego Racers, mainly because of the hypnotic title music.
I still need to play most of them from that era. Diddy Kong Racing looks super fun.
Good and good
Mario Kart 64
Best on the GBA at least.
You posted it
I like CTR because of that drift boost mechanic. It feels pretty badass once you get going.
Any other games which does this well?
Not a kart racer but chaining burnouts in burnout 2 maybe?
I've only really played CTR extensively but I assumed every kart racer did that sort of drift -> boost thingy in some form
A lot of them do, but CTR just feels buttery smooth in execution
No, CTR has one of the best and most unique boost mechanics in a kart racer.
I like Diddy Kong Racing's system of having the drift itself speed you up though. It's weird at first when you're used to shit like CTR or Mario Kart but it's fun trying to position yourself for the longest drifts and avoiding spinning out.
>Crash gets a kart racer
>Jak gets a kart racer
Honestly if Naughty Dog came out with Unkarted today I'd probably forgive them for everything.
The remake had some good ideas but they went too far with the visuals. most courses look polluted from so much detail.
That's the issue with remakes
I hate all the cosmetic shit in CTRNF honestly
I'm a total boomer about this shit but I'm sick of every online game letting every player parade around as obnoxious rainbow gays, I wish everyone just looked the normal the same and played the game because it was fun not because they want to unlock the next neon go-kart wheel.
I'm OK with bragging rights cosmetics like the rainbow wheels but everything else is annoying.
Mickey Mouse highway USA for the GBC. Not N64, no. The GBC. This game will make you rage so badly that whatever device you’re using to play it, i guarantee you that you will chuck it across the room from frustration
surprised to see so much praise for ctr itt. i love it, but most of you guys are so desperate to be contrarians and hate things that the praise comes as a bit of a shock
>OP asks for kart racers
>people post battle racers that don't involve karts
Every single time
so michael schumacher kart racing 2002 is the best one?
mario kart wii
CTR > Mariokart DS > the rest
I remember my brother crying and shouting "WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY" because he kept losing to some monkey dude
I don't think there was any "monkey dudes" in CTR. There was one in Crash Bash, though.
That must be it. I just remember a crash racing game with a bunch of literal whos but you are right, i looked it up and crt was not the game i was thinking of.
You might be thinking of Crash Nitro Kart, I just remembered that the first boss in that game is a monkey.
