That one ngl, the genre peaked at CTR for that generation at least. Not really a fair fight since it came out a couple year after the main competition and it's a barefaced knockoff, but it's still a remarkable game.

      this exactly
The courses are densely packed with detail, obstacles and curvature, the racers are the best-balanced, the items are fair, the driving is bouncy, vertical and high-skill, and it's a graphically impressive game for a PSX title.

Crash Team Racing is not only the greatest Kart Racer ever, but the greatest racing game ever.

Pretty much this, even when playing alone the game had a lot of content something that many retro kart games lacked.

The way they handled the single player campaign was fricking brilliant for a kart racer.
Too many kart racing games focus on the multiplayer, which is surprisingly one of CTR's biggest weaknesses because the PSX required an additional prehipheral for more than 2 players.

I played the frick out of the single player mode but still just a fraction of the time I managed to sink into the multiplayer stuff; at the time you just couldn't beat it as the perfect hangout game. I got my multitap with the CTR bundle but I'm not sure I got more mileage on it from another game. Blaze and Blade of all things maybe kek

Well they're certainly better on a technical level, but the track design is also a couple notches above imo.

    CTR being "wacky":
    >hit any medium-sized bump in the road, press jump and bounce high into the air over obstacles and scenery, then land and get a boost just for doing it
    Mariokart being "wacky":
    >something miserable and show-stopping happens to you at random outside of your control

I couldn't handle this one's remake, the characters feel heavier, they changed the levels' collision way too much and you can't go apeshit in tracks like sewer speedway anymore because of that. I'm just waiting for the decomp and the online mod to be finished (both being made by the same team)

The difficulty curve is fricked to all hell too, going straight from easy mode that a kid could beat blindfolded to a medium mode that requires you to be an autistic speedrunner keeping the shitty new blue flare mechanic going for the entire race. In the original, all you needed even for hard mode was to get regular boosts from slide turbos and jumping off ramps. The unlock methods are far worse too, and you can't even bypass them with codes like in the original.

        >to a medium mode that requires you to be an autistic speedrunner keeping the shitty new blue flare mechanic going for the entire race.

You don't need to keep blue fire like that unless you're doing the harder Time Trial ghosts. Also the blue fire mechanic technically isn't new, super turbo speed existed in PS1 CTR, though the next boost you did cancelled super turbo speed in PS1 CTR.

Awful voices (why the frick does Crash sound like Mickey Mouse?) and uninspired new characters (looking at you, Papu Papu but monkey, generic shark, toilet humor Shrek and dog Shrek. Velo, the Norms and the robot were good, though, to be fair).

The physics in this game are so stiff and unrewarding. Also a lot of the tracks are shameless clones from CTR. A shame, it had potential.

it's okay. doesn't have the "GOTTA GO FAST" feel of ctr, but it's alright. i like the aesthetics of this game. still felt like classic crash (thanks to VV getting some help from charles zembillas, no doubt) before twinsanity came out and made everything all moronic and vulgar.

CTR is the original, CNK is a sequel by different devs that follows the same formula and mostly plays the same as CTR, they didn't quite get everything perfect but it's not that bad.

I'm not that familiar with CTTR because it sucks and I didn't enjoy it but it's more of its own style of kart racing game with its own gimmicks, it doesn't really follow the CTR formula.

They tried to copy CTR but they fricked up the physics and the turbo mechanics. It just isn't as smooth. You'll understand if you play it.

No, CTR has one of the best and most unique boost mechanics in a kart racer.

I like Diddy Kong Racing's system of having the drift itself speed you up though. It's weird at first when you're used to shit like CTR or Mario Kart but it's fun trying to position yourself for the longest drifts and avoiding spinning out.

      Good and good

I'm a total boomer about this shit but I'm sick of every online game letting every player parade around as obnoxious rainbow homosexuals, I wish everyone just looked the normal the same and played the game because it was fun not because they want to unlock the next neon go-kart wheel.
