the Gordon on the right is exclusively meant for a brief sequence in HL: Alyx where he is in heavy shadow
the Gordon on the left is a pre-render used for marketing and box art

glad someone brought this up HL:A has a bunch of stuff that you're not suppose to fully see like pic related. it's the valve guy.
If you mean the model in HL:A then that is also only seen in shadows from a distance at the end of the game. The Alyx models in HL2 and all the Episodes are the same Alyx models they have always been, tho they probably have minor difference due to Source engine changes.
That Alyx is only seen from behind and from a distance.
No one is gonna spend time and resources correctly modeling something that no one's gonna see, especially in the current age.
Yeah the promo renders of HL2 Gordon look great. Pic related is Gordon's actual face model from HL2, plus the faces used to create him. Not quite as chad-like as the promo, but still, the modeling is superior to the HL:A face.
photorealism and stylization are mutually exclusive, with better hardware it's natural that AAA developers lean away from stylized graphics, which were often used as a crutch
HL2 is a pretty bad example of this shift though, as the facial scan/animation technology was cutting edge for the time
when PBR became widespread
You're saying Gordon and other game characters have lost their looks to alcoholism?
PBR is pretty bad but l doubt this troony has any idea what you meant.
Do I have face blindness, or does he look like Hugh Laurie?
Just a little bit, yeah.
Kinda yeah
If we're going by like Blackadder-era Laurie but just happens to have a beard, then yes
soul/soulless
SHARPER
The easier something is to do, the less effort that goes into it.

pic related is my favorite HL2 promotional image
2 had this prerender that looked weird for me even back then as well

#NotMyValveGuy
Gordon doesn't need to hear all this he's a highly trained professional
Died? Half life 2 looks ugly as hell
Right is a model that was only meant to be seen as a silhouette.
Left is from a prerendered promo art.
Stupid fricking homosexual.
No they fricked up Alyx's face, which is prominently featured in HL2, so that's no excuse.

I don't understand how a guy who did something like dishonored also did something as ugly as HL2, the only decent thing was lost coast
Even lost coast had better character models, I always thought they were overrated in the normal campaign.
The characters look great in HL2. The faces are particularly impressive.
holy shit that barney is insane
Nothing beats great art direction. All those faces look more lively than even modern shit like Witcher or RDR
>HL2
>pretty
COD 2 looks better than this game, HL2 has aged like shit
Cool opinion, bro.
>COD 2 looks better than this game
Sure
>HL2 has aged like shit
No

That's the point.

>Greg Coomer
fricking kek what the frick
Mate cmon
Greg coomer has been a known HL meme for years
Never played Half-Life I see.
Could have just taken kelly bailey's face and be done with it.

realistic lighting/shadows killed a need for art direction
>When did art direction die?
games died with seven gen, so probably art direction did too
Do people here know what art direction is?
Sure is retro in here
when vertex paint stopped being a mainstream way of shading models
It died when you mentally ill, talentless millennials got into the business
