    artificial difficulty != good
a boss where you only have 1 frame to dodge would be the hardest. it wouldn't be good.

    It's not, just tedious.
I played SOTFS last year (my 2nd playthrough ever, first one was back on release) and I was surprised by how simple the attacks and combos of the bosses are. I think every boss has like 2-3 attacks/combos, maybe 4 for DLC bosses.
People felt it was difficult because of the enemy spam.

Nah, I'd say he's right. Dark Souls 1 is very easy if you don't play like a moron and I'd say 3 is overall easier than 2 as well, even though 3 is still harder than 1 of course.

DS3s difficulty is all in the boss encounters. They are faster and they got a bigger moveset generally speaking.

DS2 difficulty meanwhile is the exact opposite. The bosses there only have a fraction of the movesets and the attacks are a lot slower. But while Dark Souls 3 is all about your reflexes - DS2 is more about the knowledge you as a player have about those encounters.
In DS3 you can beat every boss just by having decent enough reflexes. But in DS2 this doesn't really matter as the game is slow - instead you have to consider each step you take cause one blind attack can easily result into you getting hit in return.
You thought you could get a few hits on that Smelter Demon in? Too bad - he is now wiping your ass and there is nothing you can do about it - should have known that he is about to frick you up.

This is one reason why DS2 and DS3 are so controversial and some consider one title definitively worse than the other. It's all personal preference as far as combat design goes.

DS3 you can literally just dodge around the entire world and avoid every attack.

Yeah, In DS2 meanwhile you can't constantly roll cause it will drain your stamina completely and get you killed.

If you compare DS3 and DS2 bosses directly - nah the DS3 bosses are definitely harder

It's just that you the player are way stronger in DS3 compared to DS2. So "technically" DS3 is the easier game for most.
If the DS3 player with all his endless rolls would get put into DS2 with its slowass bosses the game would turn into a cakewalk.

I realized that most of my own hatred for DS2 was because it was objectively the most difficult in the franchise back in 2014. I initially liked a lot of the changes they made to combat to make it more difficult, but over time realized that they mostly just made the game less fun for me. A majority of enemies have something going on to dissuade proactive play. Whether it be extremely fast attacks, lots of poise, guard point, etc., attacking an enemy first is usually a mistake. Many enemies have at least a few attacks with really good tracking and/or range, which makes it hard to use movement to evade enemy attacks when you're in the middle of a group of enemies. Stubby hitboxes on most weapons makes it harder to hit multiple enemies at once, which means you can't crowd control groups as easily. All this together makes fighting groups of enemies rather tedious. You run around, trying to get several enemies to whiff an attack all at once, then take pot shots at whatever guy is standing near the fringes of the group. Or you just use a bow to pull enemies apart before engaging. Enemy groups are numerous in DS2, and by far the hardest parts of the game, thus the parts you will be replaying the most.

Making the combat harder is fine, but when everything you do to make it difficult also disincentivizes fun gameplay, then you've got a problem. Demon's Souls had better combat before DS2. Bloodborne, DS3, and Elden Ring have since had better combat. There's more to the games than difficulty.

This is one good thing DS2 has going for it. It's the last Souls game where the difficulty lay primarily in the areas, rather than the bosses, and it represents the pinnacle of devilish level design evolution. Bloodborne is in this sort-of inbetween area, but by the time you get to DS3, most of the effort is going into making these lavish boss movesets.

      >DS2 is more about the knowledge you as a player have about those encounters.
I'm just here to remind you that most people here play (any Souls game) once and never again, remember that one boss that filtered them and call the design bullshit, but they still shitpost about it even though their last playthrough was 6, maybe 7 years ago.

Never farmed souls lol, the only bosses i didn't firsted where those 3/4 at the endgame.

            Anonymous

            >never farmed souls
you are still overleveled. cave bosses are leveled appropriately when you enter a new area by the time you did half of them you have like 5-10 higher level, better equipment etc.

If you don't level adaptability you have like 0 invincibility frames on your roll

        Anonymous

yes, but you have the choice to level adaptability. someone playing with 0 levels in adp is not playing dark souls 2, they are playing dark souls 2 with a self-imposed challenge. practically speaking we can only appraise the difficulty of these games from the perspective that we are doing everything short of hacking, cheating or exploiting in order to beat them. from that perspective, an overleveled magic user with multiplayer phantoms can clear the entire game with absolutely no difficulty.
my verdict: fromsoft games are extremely easy, maybe even easier than children's jrpgs

            Anonymous

i disagree with this point. accessing information from outside the game itself is cheating in the same way that running code from outside the game itself is cheating. but a player with no outside information can blast everything with magic from out of range, behind multiple multiplayer phantoms with zero outside knowledge, so it's a moot point whether the player has cheated by looking at gamefaqs or whatever
