I was a digimon kid so I was never glued to the hip with the franchise to begin with. My interest had been waning and became pretty touch-and-go by gen 4 but I think Sun and Moon is the one that made me finally give up entirely. Legit didn't even get halfway through it. Only one I've played since is Arceus and while I enjoyed it for the tech demo/proof of concept it was I couldn't imagine going back to a more traditional RPG even with those changes.

No they weren’t. Gen 1 and 2 mainly had this air of mystery to what the frick Pokemon even were while still having regular animals. Then the autism kicked in somewhere and there was this massive push to it being only Pokemon. Before the retcon it was like Pokemon had only just appeared like fifty to a hundred years ago. Enough time that gyms and balls and what not had been integrated into societal norms but still recent enough that scientists were baffled and trying to do shit like clone mew and then performing horrible experiments on its baby.

Aight, city pokemon, cool. What about shit like luvdisc, sigilyph, cogayrigus, etc? All these homies had to do was shit out a creature that's either cute or cool, but instead they're just using the first unused ideas that come to mind.

Gen 5+ all have way too much text. Started with Heart gold.
I'm literally one of those guys who loved their first game and didn't like anything after it.
Gen 4 DP/P is still heavily flawed, and everyone knows what's wrong with Johto. Gen 3 maybe the best one but I don't have my heart in it.
I kept buying the games up to Sun and Moon 2. I considered buying every game that's come out since then but I know they all have so many meaningless text and piss easy gameplay.

Voltorb and Electrode as based as frick. If I were the pokemon designers and had to replace RPG Chests with Pokeballs with items inside, I would not be clever enough to think of Exploding Mimics in Gen 1. Pokeballs are already a familiar aspect of the game when you first see one, so twisting them around into a fun gimmick worked even then. They're smart as frick and the Amongus Mushrooms can't beat their style
The real cancer in pokemon design are all the cutesy shills and furry humanoids. Goofy, ugly, and monstrous mons work great.

You don't think ancient golems that lay dormant for millennia and use a dead language (ignore that it's just Braille) get a pass for not being "natural"?

voltorb and magnemite do not occur in nature

gen 1 was very neo-tokyo dystopia like, the world was very strange and these robot pokemon fit right in

only the later games tried to make completely natural creatures look man-made

pic related is akira, gen 1 mirrors it in many ways, to the weird industrial future world to psychic pokemon running rampant

mewtwo is also an obvious rip-off of tetsuo

You are seeing it from the wrong angle, japanese people used (?) to think that everything had soul, including old items. It's similar to european fairy tales where trees were sapien

    Gen VIII.

    >Gen VII leaving a bad taste with hardcore railroading and some b***h overtaking the player's story
    >SwSh bumped up the price for less features, less Pokemon, and little real improvements to compensate
    >half-assed DLCs killed the prospect of ever getting an improvised revision
    >outsourced 'remakes' of DP ultimately just replaced DS hardware-specific features and added nothing of note; at least ORAS tried something new
    >Gen IX is making it especially apparent that the three-year cycles are not giving the devs enough time to make good games, even by accident

Designs are hit or miss as usual.

Major spinoffs never stopped being good, although sadly they've funneled more into mobile games in recent years so even that's slowed down. Been looking into trying the TCG though, I saw that it's really cheap to get into and Standard's meta is in a good place; the art is also really excellent on them these days.

Pocketpair is gonna mess this game up in many ways. First being the game abandoned before becoming a finished product just like they did with Craftopia (and now with Craftopia 2), also the world design is inconsistent by being made from already existing assets blended together which include CS:S maps and actual Pokémon assets reassembled and reskinned into a Frankenstein of their own. And speaking of which, I don't know how will they get away from a Nintendo lawsuit once they find out.

    >skipped BDSP for it seeming to not be that much of an improvement over Platinum

    >skipped ScVi due looking like a hot mess

A new Legends game is all I want from mainline pokemon. Tie it into the more traditional pokemon shit we've come to know and love and you've got peak pokemon. Arceus has fricking QoL features SV doesn't have and it's so frustrating that they crank these fricking games out and clearly develop them in tandem such that one team makes a breakthrough and the new hype game doesn't even fricking get it

Even though I played, finished and enjoyed them, I hated Gamefreak for making them DS games when the 3DS was following the WiiU's path. I thought it was a waste that they didn't use the power of the 3DS to make a much nicer looking game, but then X and Y happened and understood the power of the console had nothing to do with it. It was just sheer incompetence, greed and laziness.
