There are a lot of games where you have to be in the right "mood" to play it.
I can't really elaborate on this. If you've been there, you just know.
I personally despise survival and base building mechanics but something about Subnautica makes me tolerate and even enjoy them. I bought an ultrawide monitor and this was the first game I played on it and I was totally floored by the sense of immersion. I didn't use any guides or anything, just fumbled through the dark the whole way through. Ok retrospect, a lot of the gameplay mechanics are janky or rough around the edges but the aesthetic of being stranded on an ocean planet carries this game HARD.
I hope you find some enjoyment in it.

This was how I did it. A friend suggested it to me and it was on a good sale, so I picked it up. Underwater games always creep me out, and I hated survival type games and didn't care much for base-building. But something about Subnautica just clicked with me.

While diving around in the dark was still terrifying (my friend watched me play and laughed at one point because he could hear the Reaper near the Aurora that I somehow never ran into,) it was that good kind of tension horror. And the first time I played I turned off the hunger/thirst meters (I went back and played again with them on for another playthrough,) I thoroughly enjoyed the base building.

Despite me normally not liking pretty much any aspect of the game on its own, for some reason it came together really well and got me really interested. I didn't care for the sequel as much (it felt much too cramped, and the Sea Truck isn't as fun as either the Sea Moth or the Cyclops,) so Subnautica really kind of felt like a flash in the pan. I still don't like survival games, but I've at least enjoyed base-building more since I played it.

the game requires you to have some sort of interest with it ahead of time. IT's really sloppy just a bunch of assets crammed in you're supposed to build the game yourself with the assets they provided there's no explanation or tutorial just assets and chore like gameplay

This is a comfy game where you need to like it before opening it, you won't find fun or whatever you want by playing it. It has to be fun before you even play it.

Building bases sucks ass, the best way to play is to get the Cyclops as soon as you can and make it your mobile base of operation.

Power cells are cheap, especially when you can park your base next to a kelp forest and get the rubber quickly. You can also carry all the ingredients needed for a base + nuclear reactor + charging station in a single locker.

i played subnautica on hardcore, it took 3 attempts to beat (once i died to an endgame mob, and once i drowned), it was genuinely the most terrifying gaming experience i've ever had, i had a consistently high heartrate the entire time playing, sometimes i actually felt like i was going to be sick, it was so great. hardcore definitely added to the experience

  20. 1 week ago

its great from the start but blows its load early and drops off about 2/3rd the way through.
the game's early game is extremely well tested and designed, but once you get the Cyclops submarine it kind of just ends because you only really explore 1 long dungeon with it, get a few upgrades and that's it, game's done apart from a few cutscenes.
doesnt help that like 2/3rds of the map is frickin empty with no reason to really go to it

The entire game is good tbh. Subnautica is more like a horror than a survival game for me. Think of it as of a horror

Then it stops being good after meeting mommy for the first time because it's just tedious backtracking for the rest of the game after that.

If you're not enjoying it from the moment you step into the water, it's probably not the game for you. Not saying that in a condescending or combative way, it's just a matter of fact. For the people who loved Subnautica (myself included) we never had to wait for it to get good, it just was good with a mild drop in quality towards the end.

I'm kinda hopeful for Subnautica 2.
Yes, Subnautica 2. Which the devs have referred to it as. Even they seem to be trying to memoryhole Below Zero, and rightfully so.

It's crazy to think that Below Zero was originally planned as just a map expansion DLC and it would have been 10x better like that.
Just the extra biomes without the annoying story and constant talking. Probably no terrible snowmobile sections either. No nerfed prawn suit. You'd still have the cyclops too.
      >Less effort, better product
      Crazy.

The end game was kinda dissapointing and I always wish there was more to do at my bases.

Am I the only one who things the game also got carried hard by the soundtrack? Letting that guy go for the sequel seemed really dumb to me.

I used that drill arm thing on the mech with the grappling hook to kill it. Took a while and it respawned not too much later, but it was cool bc it seemed like the other fish in that graveyard area started showing up more which made me think I fricked up the ecosystem. I built a base right before I got to the bottom, near a giant glowing tree I think, and was disappointed that I never really used it.

stranded deep would be ok if the bosses had any balance whatsoever and the required endgame items didnt fricking despawn so having played it to that point ill give it a 1/10 (also because leaving the map via raft isn't actually possible which was somewhat implied to be possible in the description)
can't farm on rafts either iirc so can't brute force it, can only death stranding as many boxes as you can fit on your bote. and they will all fall off if you tip once.

I enjoyed some part of it at first which is why its not a zero.
throwing spears is the solution to not dying at first.

When you get the cyclops, absolute ludokino experience, i squeezed that motherfricker up to the lava lab with the talking kaiju, i was baffled to find out that the Cyclops was replaced by a garbage sea truck in the sequel, the only flaw of the Cyclops is that you can't put a nuclear reactor in it
