I did a no SOL reset no fairy no traps run, if anything, everyone else in the world needs to apply themselves, the level of minmaxing and wiping/reloading the game at bosses to save 0.x% dragon meter was fricking ridiculous, I probably game overed over a thousand times. it's still not a very good game to replay in current year, as I recently tried. hard doesn't equal good, and I say that as a person who used to play games on made up difficulty levels that make that run you are so proud of look like a fricking joke, because I hated myself.

The only reason I didn't 1CC my first blind run was because I forgot to equip kick before facing the boss where you meet Nina. That was the one and only game over I incurred, and realized how I was supposed to be playing the game.
I was missing all sorts of shit that I didn't even know about until after the fact and still managed to beat the game with a healthy 10% of D-Counter remaining. That includes me never getting Lin's shotgun-like skill, OR the fricking cleaner. I also never got Nina's teleport OR her TP gift skills.
Dragon Quarter isn't difficult. In fact, it's incredibly fair. What it does so well is present you with situations where there is a clear right answer - but tempts you to make moronic choices that SEEM like they're the smart plays. It even does the Mega Man thing where it warns you in advance what you should expect soon, then hits you with the "real" version of it.
Everything about it is anti-JRPG. You're expected to play well. The game rewards you for ending battles before they ever have a chance to start. The game punishes you for allowing battles to drag on. You are punished for hoarding items. You're expected to spend any money you get as you earn it. The game makes you THINK you're being punished for exploring, causing you to push yourself too far and too hard, when you really have all the time in the world. The game makes you think D-Counter is worth far more than it actually is, causing you not to use it until you've already run yourself ragged, when the play was always to use it as early as you know you'll need it.
Dragon Quarter is THE single strongest moron filter out of all JRPGs. And it's the most satisfying one to beat for the first time. And the most satisfying one to beat again at gigachad power with great gear and knowledge when you can give the game the middle finger that IT was giving you during your first playthrough.

recently finally got real speakers, listening to 4's lossless OST is a brand new experience, the bass in raging emperor's banquet and men of war was something I never heard before now, it's like a cross between some sort of pseudo-drum and those giant wind instruments from africa. it truly is the most solid best game ever made contender of any game I have ever played, the only other game that comes close is radiant historia.

        >How is it?
NTA, but I've been playing it after getting it from myabandonware.
There is a bit of jank here and there, like randomly crashing when certain characters try to do their attack animations (Ershin caused me to crash like 6 times) and battle music doesn't loop properly and just starts with beginning notes again.
Resolution is a bit streched on modern screen and some things look smeared or jagged.
Overall is plays like how it played on my PS1, but with keyboard.

So many IDIOTS act as if 2001 and 2003 had essentially the same culture
when the culture at large went to absolute shit during 2002,
and then 2003 had a completely different culture than 2001, one that sucked total ass.

2001 had classics like BoF4 oozing out its pores whereas 2003 had rubbish like Simpsons H&R.

Man, I love Breath of Fire. I so wish for a Breath of Fire 3 and 4 collection to release soon, with like a nice soundtrack that you can loop and shuffle, and scrolling artwork. And like, stuff like speedup n stuff. It sucks cuz BoF3 has like, naked baby Ryu, and naked Faeries, and a naked Deis, so I doubt they'll ever re-release it today untouched. It just doesn't feel right playing that game on my PC, where I do my taxes. I want it Capcom, I'll keep asking.

The shittiest parts about Dragon Quarter were the D-Meter, stopping you from using your Dragon stuffs (which of course makes the very end that much better, when you blast that shit up), and the random dungeon crawling shit. Actually playing the game was pretty shitty, though I do like the story at the very least. Not a huge fan of the design of Nina and Ryu though, to be honest, though I can appreciate that they'd tried something with it. Nice when Nina got her wings back. Basically, I want the dragon transformations and faerie system and fishing of BoF3, with maybe a story that's a cross between DQ and BoF4. I'm not sure what I'm asking for, but it'd be sweet to get another cool Ryu design.

I swear, too, Ryu, Rei, Nina, Garr, Momo, Peco, that's one of the best JRPG parties of all time. Garr is badass.

Friendly reminder that modern audiences HATE turn-based combat so there is no business reason to revive a turn-based franchise.
