Probably FFX, its strikes the right balance between modern and classic FF.

If you just want the "hightlights" of the series, then start with FF VII. If you like VII then play VI, and IX, and if you like those then add VIII and X.

If you want to actually dive deeper into it and see how FF has evolved, I think the series is best experiences starting with SNES games, so start with IV, then play them until XII

You can start anywhere between 4-10 really. They're all stand alone and have their advantages and disadvantages. Just take a quick look at all the characters and decide which one you like the best and start there.

Spinoffs: FFT, FFTA, FFTA2, Crystal Chronicles, Chocobo's Dungeon
    Maybe: X-2, VII
    Shit: The rest

The second maybe should be VIII. I avoided XI and XIV because they are MMOs

        >Avoided ffxiv becaise it's an mmo
Unironically it has the best story and characters in the entire franchise. I thought of not playing it because it's an mmo but it pulled me in, it's worth it if for the story alone and then stop.

Start at 6 and go through the series to 10, also play Tactics if you like that style of gameplay.
Don't bother with any of the games after that.

The most newcomer friendly FF games are FFX, FFVII and FFIX. Start there.

I don't get all the hate for 2. I'm playing it rn and it seems fine. I'm finding the "make each character whatever class or hybrid you want them to be" thing quite enjoyable. My main complaint is the constantly rotating 4th character. But the story & everything is fine and perfectly enjoyable if you like all the other retro JRPGs.

I mean, C isnt bad. When i played it i thought it was ok, but it has tremendous problems with the story events not connecting and the balance in general.

Start with Mystic Quest. Frick what everyone else says. They're not true FF OG's like me. MQ is literally the only right answer.

Alright, fine. It's probably just my nostalgia. It's basically baby's first intro to RPGs, mash the A button to win every fight. But the music is literally still unmatched to this day. The weapons, characters and world/lore/dungeons are still pretty cool imo, albeit generic.

Otherwise, if you choose to be an uncultured pleb like the rest of these normies, then start with 6>7>9>10.

Samegayging to add that the main cool things about MQ that distinguish it from the others is that you actually interact with the world with bombs, grappling hooks, etc. It's not just walk around and play a visual novel. And visible enemies instead of random encounters is also nice.

    Essential: IV, VI, VII, X

    Very Good: V, IX, XII

Good but flawed: I, III, VIII, X-2, XIII-2, Lightning Returns

    Not Good: II, XIII, XV

Only if you like MMO: XI, XIV

FFX No doubt, its the complete package yet accesible.
If you want to try retro start with FF IV or V.
Just dont start with VII Remake... save that for later.
Try the og VII first, then CC then the remake.

5's story was more lighthearted and better though
and the job system is probably where FF combat peaked outside FFX/X-2 and 7R

Stop being a pussy and start with 1. There's literally nothing wrong with it. The pixel remasters dumb the difficulty down so you can get the gist of the experience without it being unnecessarily tedious.

Is Final fantasy 7 remake a remake of the entire game or not? Or does it only remake the original story half way or something?

The remake only covers up until leaving Midgard

            So did everyone else
Imagine the surprise when you get partway through the game and some flaming homosexual on a motorcycle starts doing anime flips
Or the part where the main party are no longer morally grey because Shinra performs a false flag attack on themselves, but are also attacked by a different cell of AVALANCHE that's never mentioned before and are never mentioned again

I think I'll play the original and skip this one i play these games for the story and don't want to get blue balled by an incomplete picture.

It's not a remake, it's Final Fantasy VII: Remake
It's another compilation entry, the alternate-universe sequel to Crisis Core.

It's not a real remake. It's an alternate timeline type of thing and no it doesn't even cover 1/3 of the original plot.

Oh I thought it was a remake with updated graphics/ visuals.
        How strange.

Are the pixel remasters any good? They seem to be the most feature complete releases but are clearly based off the GBA ports if the blindingly bright colors are anything to go off of. Also is the FF3 3D remake worth picking up over the pixel remaster? I like the chibi models quite a bit.
