i'm not talking about bugs, i've been playing bethesda games since 2006 so i don't have an issue dealing with them in that regard. i'm talking about content that was promised but is simply not going to be in the game.
historically speaking a game getting delayed is a massive red flag. most times its a case of "oh shit we arent as near completion as we thought" as opposed to them putting finishing touches on games. this is especially true in the age of frequent updates where devs can just patch in minor fixes with a quick update after release.
i think the only dev who delays their game and actually releases a finished product is rockstar, but i feel like that might just be a marketing strategy for them.

Bethesda isn't known for pulling a Spore or No Man's Sky and vastly misrepresenting what's in their game. Most of "Todd's lies" have been smaller cut content that we never got to see in the first place, only hear about. If they show off flying in the gameplay reveal, there's going to be flying. If they show off various planets and systems, we'll see them in game.
Shit that is easily on the chopping block is content only mentioned in passing, like being an undercover agent in the pirate faction.

Skyrim took 6 years of development and Fallout 4 took 7, it just seemed smaller cause other games were being released during each development - Fallout 3 during Skyrim and Skyrim during Fallout 4. Starfield was being worked on at the same time as Fallout 76, which feels like a side project so everyone looks back towards Fallout 4 instead. 5 years between 76 and the next game is average for how long it's taking them to make each game these days. I'd expect TES VI to take 8.5 years total and be released 6 years after Starfield at the rate they're going.

That's not true at all. The only overlap between fallout 3 and skyrim was preproduction and that's just hashing out the story and concept art. Production didn't actually start until after fallout 3 was released.

What's not true? Preproduction is working on the game and it becomes part of how long development from start to finish takes.

To be fair they implied in the advertising that the game wasn't going to be a complete disaster on launch. They knew the state the game was in and launched anyway.

Most of the issues were related to the netcode which was always a concern on my radar just knowing it was being hacked by another studio (formerly Battlecry rebranded into Bethesda Austin) into an engine that was never built to track more than a single player. It's also something that really can have invisible problems not manifest until beta/ship because that's when servers need to operate at scale. And I don't think Bethesda expected the reaction to be so hostile, because generally their audiences have been willing to tolerate a bit of bugginess because they love their games. I think people were kind of meh on the entire idea of FO76 which is why everyone was ready to pounce on it.

Starfield is the game I'm looking forward to most this year by a long shot but your premise is still correct. A game being delayed has consistently been a red flag that it's a fricking disaster. Total Warhammer 3, Darktide and Cyberpunk 2077 are all recent examples that come to mind.

Many of the big games of 2022 got delayed into 2023. Atomic Heart, Pragmata, Dead Island 2, Hogwarts Legacy, Skull & Bones, Forspoken, Avatar Frontiers of Pandora, Kerbal Space Program 2, STALKER 2, Redfall, Suicide Squad, BOTW2.
If they're all going to be shit - we already know half or more of them are guaranteed to be - then at least Starfield is in good company.

          Anonymous

When a game is delayed once it's usually fine, when it's delayed twice or more that's a sign that the development is in the shitter and they're scrambling to salvage it.

Starfield's only been delayed once so it's not a huge red flag yet, but if the rumours about it being delayed again past Q2 are real then it's probably a trainwreck in the making.

Obsidian is to creative literary genius what Bethesda is to hack pulp idiocy. They both so far surpass anyone else in their field that they will be remembered 1,000 years from now as a kind of yin and yang of fantasy, a Manichean duality of speculative letters. For every sublime, luminous beauty that Obsidian has gifted the world, Bethesda has cursed us with a tedious, banal ugliness. It is unfair to compare the two directly on any one point, because Bethesda is in every way the anti-Obsidian, patently sterile, parasitical, and inferior, but so much so that it becomes a monument in it's own right, and counterbalances Obsidian. Could one exist without the other?

Obsidian obviously could. But it is only by the contrast that Bethesda offers that we can truly appreciate the full depths and heights of Obsidian. Our understanding of RPGs would be incomplete if Bethesda had never set development to games. It is through only the abject failure and futility of Bethesda that we can approach an apprehension of the true scope and scale of Obsidian's hitherto inconceivable greatness. Perhaps this is what Avellone had in mind when he wrote about the Bear and the Bull. If Obsidian is a civilizing hope in the image of NCR, truly Bethesda is like unto Caesar. It is only reflected in the awfulness of the one that we can fully see the goodness of the other.

I blame CDPR. I blame them so fricking hard. They have always been an obnoxious marketing hype monster who emphasize graphics over everything else. They got lucky one fricking time, because apparently audiences have no standards for physics, AI, or dynamic systems when it comes to fantasy games. And man, they rode their newfound mass appeal for all it was worth. Branding themselves as the good guy studio, incessantly felating gamers, nonstop promotion, Keanu fricking Reaves. I don't even think their leadership even understands programming nor realized how far behind their technical capabilities were relative to the competition. But they kept drumming up the hype machine anyway. Manufactured the most anticipated title they were never going to live up to. And every gamer fricking fell for it because they're all a bunch of idiots who don't know what programming is either. And now everyone is angry and vindictive because they fell for a marketing company's unobtainable promises.
