How hyped were Warcraft fans for the announcement of WoW back in the day?

Depends who you were. There were people absolutely losing it over the idea of exploring big open areas of Warcraft 3 has a "unit" from the game and there were people like me who didn't give a shit and just wanted Warcraft 4 and had to slowly realise I was never getting one because they resolved the storyline in the MMO bullshit.

The overall industry? None of these. It would have to be Oblivion considering it had the horse armor DLC, which warped into all the extreme monetizations we have today.

However, Halo absolutely killed the FPS genre. Only 2 weapons allowed, regenerating shields, regenerating health, slow as fuck gameplay, etc.

      >Story is about a main character, his love interest and a villain who is somehow related to him
      >The rest of the characters don't matter and have little impact on the overall plot, and just serve as one note cliches / sterotypes
      >Heavy emphasis on romance and cinematics
I noticed that basically every JRPG after FF7 followed this exact template

World of Warcraft easily, because it set up the expectation that every game needed to have an online/social element and that was the death of singleplayer games.

But they weren't THE big thing, WoW warped the whole market around them and we're still experiencing the ripple effect. The rest of games on OP popukarized some mechanics, some didn't even have much effect outside their genre.

HL is responsible for the death of the classic FPS game and instead replacing them with cinematic shooters. GoldenEye resulted in objective based arcade shooters like No One Lives Forever, Timesplitters, Perfect Dark. But the majority of them were pseudo realistic narrative driven like Shit life

There's nothing groundbreaking or noteworthy of any of the souls games after Demon Souls which was genuinely impressive for a 2009 game. Souls has absolutely ruined modern video games now

        Anonymous

i'd argue there definitely is something ground-breaking (and undeniably there are thing that are noteworthy) about souls, particularly ds1. It's maybe the most unique style of story telling in a game to date, elden ring also does it exceptionally well. If you don't like them thats fine, but how on earth has souls ruined modern gaming? what mainstream games has it even influenced to such an extent?

          Anonymous

Your argument only proves how young you are because it's objectively incorrect. Nothing about dark souls is unique or new, the only thing special about it is that it merely held to older design philosophies in a time where casualfags like yourself were desprately trying to prove they weren't filthy casuals and thus latched on to any game that didn't tongue your ass clean.

You aren't gonna argue because you have nothing to dispute it, you know it's the truth. Hell, DS1 was just an iteration on tbh which itself was iterative on king's field. That's not even getting into shit from other studios.

    CSGO and TF2 normalized Microtransactions.
Sure games like Mapple Story had them but they were up front with the items you bought.

Tf2 and CSGO introduced "randomness" and loot crates to the masses.
Not even Fortnite makes paid items random.
