      The first one.

      The first one.

      The first one.

      The first one.

well the first one OP, but failing that, RE2. It's the one that really got the series rolling big time and is made in such a way that you don't have to have played the first game at all, in fact that might give you the most authentic Leon and Claire experience you can get of two strangers making it into that hell city and having to uncover what is happening to the people of Raccoon City

the first one as in REmake or the actual first one?

first one as in PS1, you can play the REmake after if you want to see the differences. Probably will enjoy REmake more knowing what the changes are by playing the OG first

all of the changes in REmake were made as a nod to people who played the original if you play it first they'll fly right over your head

I think the Lisa Trevor shit was kinda dumb as well as that entire thing with the suspended coffin in the underground graveyard. (they just kept a zombie in there the entire time?) The house's puzzles were silly in the first, but REmake turns it into a funhouse haunted mansion. It was cool that it was just a mansion that had a lab accident. Not Dracula's haunted castle.

Just play the REmake, it's not like you have anything to prove not having grown up with the series.

        is correct.

I'd say play the remake, you are not missing out on anything by skipping the original.

          the atmosphere is totally different
the og is like a fricked up normal mansion, like a haunted museum
the remake is a more generic haunted house, complete with inexplicable candles

        To add to this

Just play the REmake, it's not like you have anything to prove not having grown up with the series.
        [...] is correct.

I'd suggest playing the original RE2/3 prior to their remakes since they're so different.

Of course you should play the original RE 2 and 3 since the remakes are inferior, especially 3

Yeah, 3's remake is a real letdown, but at least it's over quick.

what's there is good I think. It is more fun to play than RE2R, but less of a horror game. It's just way too short

        Anonymous

the first one, but play REmake too
I wouldn't recommend starting with REmake because you'll go back to 2 and 3 after that and they look and play worse
just follow the release order, people meme the first game because of its voice acting but it's a good game

Play the first one, hate it, then play the remake and love it
If you start the remake you're not getting the authentic experience

              CANON GUIDE:
Of the material referenced above, only Gaiden, Operation Raccoon City, and the Sherry/Ada Drama Albums are non-canonical. The rest are either firmly canon or lie in a grey canon. Wesker's Report is partially canon but much of its contents were retconned by The Umbrella Chronicles.
The games RE:2, RE:3, and RE:4 are non-canonical outside of additive character details given how their timelines don't line up with the fall of Raccoon City and RE:4 being labelled as a sequel to RE:2.
There exists two other "universes" in Biohazard as well. Those are the "Perryverse", which are the seven novels written by SD Perry, that adapt up to Code Veronica and have their own takes on the characters as well as different events (two of the novels being completely original).
The second is the infamous Andersonverse, which is comprised of the 6 film series. Resident Evil, Apocalypse, Extinction, Afterlife, Retribution, and The Final Chapter.

well the first one OP, but failing that, RE2. It's the one that really got the series rolling big time and is made in such a way that you don't have to have played the first game at all, in fact that might give you the most authentic Leon and Claire experience you can get of two strangers making it into that hell city and having to uncover what is happening to the people of Raccoon City

7 and 8 are great, also remake 2 on hardcore is harder than the original. Don't listen to boomers.

7 was mediocrity in a nutshell, i imagine 8 is the same. Still better than 5 and 6 at least, all of them don't really feel like Resident Evil games anyway.

5 is awful, maybe if you grew up plaing Gears of War and other slop then you think its way better than it actually is but for people with taste its just a very bad game

Both RE0 and CV are better than 4

          Anonymous

no way. They are different, sure, but RE4 is more competent in everything it tries to do, larger scale and the most acclaimed game in the series. CV was cheesy as frick and too hard and I've always hated it. I have not played Zero but I dont want to since I know it has no item boxes.

          5 is significantly better than 6, 7, and 8.

5 is not better than 7. Maybe better than 8 though
All the horror was removed in RE5 for the sake of coop. But other than that it was like RE4 in Africa with Chris, which was pretty cool

            >but RE4 is more competent in everything it tries to do

Its actually worse in pretty much everything it tries to do, the story, the OST, the locations, the events, the artstyle, the gameplay, everything it does is worse than 0 or CV. But zoomers really wanted RE to turn into Gears of War, it didn't matter if the game was mediocre.

              Anonymous

the story in CV felt like an off-topic anime sidestory in Antarctica about trannies, no. And frick the cheesy Matrix-ripoff shit especially. RE4 managed to do the kind of same thing in a way that looked cool.
I dont remember the OST in either of them tbh, neither was memorable. The gameplay was the same shit as the PSX games just extra hard and tedious. RE4 is better in every way, and I grew up playing PSX RE1-3. You just have to accept that it plays completely differently to previous entries

                Anonymous

RE4's story is even more cringe than Code Veronica but again zoomers that wanted Gears of War horror edition will keep making shit up.

                >I dont remember the OST in either of them tbh

CV easily has the best music in the series. They really went in a JRPG inspired direction with the soundtrack. It's over the top, cheesy and you gotta love it.

I agree it's my favourite save theme. I prefer the themes that are peaceful like 0,1 and CV. I like the bell sounds as well, like I was saying, I like the JRPG type sound they were going for here too.

Yes. Especially since I had to include 5, seemed only fair
        >re 7 optional
Pov shift and mold men are not Resident Evil, only included it because they have the name and are decent as generic horror. Same as 8, just because it has big titty vampire you jerk off to doesnt make it a good Resident Evil. These 2 games are the furthest thing from what you could call Resident Evil

          >These 2 games are the furthest thing from what you could call Resident Evil
7 and 8, despite their issues with pacing, are much closer to the survival horror gameplay from 1-3 than the action shit from 4-6. The change to first-person perspective is actually closer to effect to tank controls than over-the-shoulder third-person shooting, since you have to deal with low speed, small ammo pools, and a small FOV and don't have access to sick kicks and flips to mindlessly decimate hordes of zombies.

Want my opinion? I started with 4. Played 5. Never touched 6 as it was cursed as all hell. It had that vile want to become an action game instead of survival horror. 7 and 8 you can play on their own. You really don't need to know anything aside from them. Remake 2 is excellent. Remake 3 is... Okay. Made by the B team so it's quite sub par. OG RE 1 and 2 never played but people love RE 1 HD. My opinion is do RE 1 HD, remake 2, RE 4 and end it at 5. do 7 and 8 whenever.

I recently started playing the first one (remake) for the first time, I've never played a RE before so si'm going blind.
I'm really liking the atmosphere and the design of the mansion.
But the límited inventory systen and the long door ooening animations make It kinda of a drag when you dont know what you have to do.

Resident Evil 1 remake, since it's the peak of the original RE style.
Then Resident Evil 4, since it's the peak of the action-focused RE games.
Anywhere you want from there. Save 5 for when you have a friend to co-op the game with.

Still going with the RE0 and CV are bad so you can make RE4 look better than it actually is? RE4 remake is about to come out and finally you can stop pretending RE4 was anything but a mediocre game whose rise to fame was a different camera angle.

        Anonymous

I don't care about "making RE4 look better than it actually is" when everyone already sucks it's metaphorical dick constantly and preteneds it's a completly perfect game when it's really not. Every other game in the must play tier(besides re3) it's better than re4. But that is unrelated to RE0 and CV being complete an utter garbage.

The revelation games suck! Try to be horror, try to be action, fail at both.

0 and code veronica aren't as good as the other mainline entries but should not be disrespected by being placed below the rev games.

      Anonymous

CV is just straight up not a bad game, it's by far the most misrepresented game in the series. 0 is also not "bad" but it is almost killed by it's batshit way of handling storage (which is unbelievably bad). If you can somehow look past it though everything else there is solid, I would say it's mid (the story and retcons is objectively shit though).

If you want to be fully acquainted with RE in all its glory, just do release order including all classic games.

Honestly don't listen to the gays telling you to play the first one / REmake, it's really not that good and did NOT age well at all. Like sure it looks nice but I guarantee you're not gonna have fun. Feel free to skip directly to Remake 2, you're really not missing much storywise anyway plus you can come back to it later. REmake for a new fan will seriously just put you off the games as a whole.

Either Resident Evil: Director's Cut or RE2. Ideally, play the original trilogy first, then go for the remakes. After that is either 4-6 or 7-8, and beyond that is Code Veronica and 0

It took me over a decade to get into the OG because muh tank control and whatnot, but one day it clicked (I discovered it was like an rpg to some extent) and I got hooked, its also nice to see the jump to remakes after playing them. If you are an idiot that still can't get into the old games, just play REmake 2
