Fricken great, same. I don't coomlect but if I did this would 100% be the first PS1 game I'd get

It's cool how they made the rerelease cover different, almost like they knew some collectors would buy it. Silent Hill also has several official strategy guides, back in the 2000s I was collecting some of them for whatever reason. Don't think I finished though

I think the only game I have more than one copy of is JP Donkey Kong Country (and maybe JP Street Fighter II WW?). Anything else that I have multiple copies of is either different regions or different format (like arcade can The House of the Dead and Saturn THotD).
The only reason I have multiples of DKC would be due to lot buying and I haven't bothered to sell the dupe.

How far can you get in the trial disc?

Curious as to how you ended up with two full game copies lol

I’ve beaten the full game a couple of times, I don’t know Japanese so I got a lot of help from many guides and videos, the trial disc I never tried getting very far in so I don’t know where it ends. Really hope someone makes a translation patch for this game soon, it’s obviously an amazing game but I’d like to play it as intended without having to reference shit on my computer all the time

I'm in love with the horror genre so the first copy I just bought because I wanted to play the game.
The second copy, I just happened to see being sold at a Book Off very cheaply (well, cheaply as Yuuyami Doori goes) with a 30% discount for having scratches on the disc imperceptible to the naked eye and couldn't resist.

I've played a lot of games over the years and honestly Yuuyami Doori is probably the best one. I can understand Japanese, but I wish it got a translation so more people could play it.
The circumstances of its release I find very saddening- coming out too late in the PS1's life-cycle, with gameplay seen as antiquated and the horror boom already at its end and so receiving an unfairly negative reception.

The gameplay is never going to have a universal appeal, but in a different world it could've been something like Japan's Planescape Torment; a game acclaimed for its brilliant writing and story. As it is, it's just largely forgotten.

Yeah it really is something unique in the PS1 catalogue. It has all the qualities of what I enjoy in video games, the mystery, the exploration, the story, the atmosphere. The game is massive too. It's like Twilight Syndrome + Mizzurna Falls, the latter obviously being one of the best games ever as well.

              Anonymous

Some of the same staff as Twilight Syndrome so it's natural they'd be comparable, but it's amazing how much content they managed to fit in Yuuyami compared to Twilight Syndrome.

Was there a rumour you liked in particular?

Even though it's an early one and one of the few that are mandatory, I thought the one about Hanako-san's grave set the tone of the game masterfully. Normally, in Japanese horror, destroying a sacred forest and building a car park on it would elicit all sorts of ghostly vengeance, but here it's just a further erosion of the links to the spiritual the land once had. It struck me as very poignant to portray the ghosts as being victims of urban decay and the post-bubble economy as much as the unfortunate teenage protagonists.

願いがかなう楠の噂 (the wish-granting kusunoki) also stuck with me for the impactful portrayal of Sango and Kurumi's relationship.

That's another thing about the game- the realism with which the characters are presented. In most Japanese anime/games/manga, a character with the intellectual disabilities Kurumi has would be portrayed as cute or endearing, 'moe' if you will, but here we have her being made fun of at school and her parents in constant contact with a doctor fretting about her future prospects or lack thereof.

I don't mean to go on so much- but it's rare to be afforded a chance to talk about the game.

I haven't played Mizzurna Falls, but it's been on my list of games to look out for. I'll pick up a copy as soon as possible if you say it's that good.

I liked every rumour that I got to play, the ones that stuck with me a lot were the ones related to ghosts of aborted babies of which I guess there were a couple, extremely bleak topics for a PS1 era game to tackle. One with the lady near the river talking about revenge against her boyfriend was a good one. I liked one rumour that was about shouting near some train tracks to conjure something. The cat temple one was pretty cute, and it took me a few playthroughs to realize you have to interrupt the elder cat while he is speaking, in order to progress the storyline (not understanding japanese here was very detrimental, so thank frick for the guide that told me).

I know at least a couple of people have shown proof-of-concept of actual translation projects, showing actual text insertion with proper fonts. Hopefully any of those projects will eventually see completion. I imagine Yuuyami is a b***h to get working, considering the amount of text, but I have no idea really

Mizzurna Falls has a different tone compared to Yuuyami, as you can imagine it would, being a Japanese take on an American setting. Not as sombre as Yuuyami, but it does revolve around a murder mystery and other mature themes. It is by far the most ambitious game I have ever played on PS1, and you will be amazed by the vastness of the whole experience. The technological imperfections of the game are a side effect of how massive the scope of the playable world is. Huge open map to explore, both by foot and driving, with many detailed room interiors from buildings you can actually enter. Many NPC's with set schedules and interactions, telling you clues to solving the central question. It will probably take either multiple playthroughs, or a lot of notes and saving/loading to achieve the best ending, but it is entirely doable.

… to elaborate, is the story of Mizzurna Falls as emotionally deep as Yuuyami? Absolutely not, but it’s fleshed out and very immersive. It’s also not horror, contrary to it being included in a lot of PS1 horror lists. Any PS1 horror fan should enjoy it though. If you’re a true PS1 fanatic in general, Mizzurna Falls is an absolute 100% must play title

                > it took me a few playthroughs to realize you have to interrupt the elder cat while he is speaking
That wasn't obvious to me either and I can understand Japanese.
I think a lot of things about the game and the requirements for starting some of the rumours are pretty arcane. I was using the official strategy guide and I still managed to miss a rumour or two (something for the next playthrough).

                >I liked one rumour that was about shouting near some train tracks to conjure something
That was an interesting one, since the premise of a vengeful spirit who had all his limbs cut off by a train seems quite cliched and ridiculous and seems to have characteristics of a misunderstanding based on word play (like the Dogura Magura story) making Sango naturally assume it's total nonsense... and then her foot actually does get caught in the train tracks.
It's an interesting one to analyse. Kurumi didn't react badly to the train tracks as she normally does in the presence of ghosts, so I think the implication is it was just a coincidence and Sango's bad luck in play.

Mizzurna Falls sounds great. I will definitely buy it if I see it at a good price (another expensive game, unfortunately).

Back when Metal Gear Solid first game out that was the game I waned more than anything. So when any relative asked what I wanted for christmas that was the only thing I said. I got five copies of MGS that year. Which was a relief for Nan because she didn't manage to find a copy and was worried about letting me down. She ended up getting me Spyro incidentally.

I remember my christmas campaign to get ff3/6, i began that battle early and well past thanksgiving that year. I was renting it and restarting every once and awhile. I eventually did get that very expensive game and i got my mom to like the intro song and i think the ending theme.

      Gotta have all the variants
Some differences are bigger, like artwork, packaging or actual software revisions, some are just catalogue numbers or different logos
