The Dreamcast/Xbox layout fights against muscle memory developed from Nintendo layout controllers. It gets fricky if a game only has the letter as a prompt. Funnily enough Switch era Nintendo games tend to be extra accessible since a lot of the time the button prompts don't even show the letter, just the button's position on the diamond (due to sideways joycons being a control method in some games) which is very intuitive.
The PS symbols carry none of these problems since they're an entirely different system, even the cross button symbol is easily distinguishable from an 'X'. Though PS games do occasionally have some frickery unique to them as and

i unironically change my settings to circle as confirm and X as cancel

point out, changing control schemes for the west was always a mistake.

Funny you should say that, because I developed "A on bottom" muscle memory from a Nintendo layout controller.

I'm not sure why they thought upwards angled B and A was so good it needed to be backported to NES, that's not the angle your thumb is likely to align on.

furthermore metal gear solid will often be like
            >press the action button to enter the dipshit mode, then while in dipshit mode hold the crankle button with good timing (whatever that timing is lmao) to destroy metal gear, by the way did I tell you about my paraplegic brother who died in nyasaland twenty years ago, he was researching anal sex and blah blah blah (twenty minutes of this)
by which time you don't even remember what they said, never mind the translation into real buttons, never mind have the actual execution of the thing down
I don't know if another game did the Paper Mario system first where you are required to execute the action with the button prompts on screen as you do it before you can move on, but it's the best way to do this sort of thing

It's physically the same but the circle is confirming and X is for canceling. They reversed it in the west for whatever reason.

egonomics. the confirm button is the most used face button, so moving it closer to the thumbstick is just better design. playstations biggest issue is they won't risk a new design, remember when they gave away trigger grips for their own controller rather than fix it. nintendo is the other direction where they have a completely different design each time but always weirds hamper them

Real question: when you emulate a Switch game what do you bind your buttons to on your Xbox/PS5 controller?

Do you make A Circle, and B Cross, or do you function swap and have B as Circle and A as Cross?

Also if using an Xbox Controller do you keep the original input locations (Y is X, B is A) or just run 1:1

the resting position of holding a controller is at the sides. the most used button is the confirm button. so the most easy place for your right thumb to move to is the circle button.
whenever you want to cancel something it's done with intent which goes in-line with making an effort to move the thumb down to the X button, exiting out of something like moving your thumb down to X is like moving your mouse to the top right of a window to close it.
using X as your confirm button is like using your right click on your mouse as your primary button.

You don't understand. You don't realize what you're missing because you never had it. Having to undergo a readjustment period when switching controllers is the price we pay for having access to superior, intuitive control mastery in the first place.

There is something bad about it: When they released the first XBox, they could have kept the same damn button configuration already in use, and everything would be the same now except there wouldn't be any confusion across control schemes. It would be a superior position to the one we have now.

worst part is that to this very day shitdows STILL has no way to map controller ports, or to remap buttons. instead you have to rely on filter drivers or abstractions like x360ce. it's simply astounding how one company can be so malicious and negligent

The only reason XBox controllers became the PC standard is Windows. Plain and simple. It has nothing to do with the majority of people choosing it over anything else, Microsoft just pushed their product on the OS itself so people would double dip on XBox.

It’s funny because Japanese firmware on PlayStations make them act like a Switch anyways with O as confirm and X as cancel. I always frick it up when switching from my US to Japanese Vita.

That's because a O is the japanese equivalent to a checkmark, while a X means "wrong". It used to be the case that all Playstation controls followed this convention (with the same confirm/cancel button positions as Nintendo), but it was later swapped to match Xbox. I think this was around the same time that Playstation HQ moved from Japan to California.

The color doesn't matter because you're never looking at the controller. GC was the best design ever because you could tell by the shapes of the buttons where they fit on the layout intuitively. The Wii controller was moronic with the remote form, but at least it still tried to shape most of the buttons. Everything after is a step back.

Doesn't help that the Y button is where the X button used to be and the X button is where the A button used to be (on SNES)

GC did it right. A is the main action button, B is for cancel, X and Y fit their axes. Nintendo just went full moron on SNES for some reason and made A the right button rather than bottom, which ripples in the industry to this day, even though they themselves knew it's not the best placement judging from the launch games.

Yes. The Gamecube is actually closer to the Xbox with Y on top and A on the bottom, and A and B even match color wise, but B and X are reversed left to right in comparison. As someone who mostly owned a Gamecube for Nintendo stuff I'm still constantly fricked when an Xbox game says to hit X.

      A = Jump/Conrfirm.

that's how it's meant to be.

then with wii u they turned into fricking morons. and put the A button to the right instead of the center.
      A = Action/Confim
      B = Jump/Cancel

genuinely works better than the traditional layout for some games. A lot worse for some games too. I think it mostly depends on how often you need to press x and y and if you need to hold them down while pressing other buttons. Windows has native support for xbox gamepad because both are owned by Microsoft

        Anonymous

And how does that affect game developers all of a sudden making it the default?
There were plenty of gamepads for PC before Xbox. During Xbox. And with or without official support, people were using competitor controllers anyway.
Also Playstation has had official PC drivers for a full decade already.

          >Also Playstation has had official PC drivers for a full decade already

Completely wrong. Dualshock support didn't come to Windows until the later half of PS4 lifespan, and the controllers are still unusable to this day if you're outside Steam or that Playstation streaming app. You can connect it to the PC, make it recognize the device and install drivers, but it won't work on anything without third party software.

DS3 (from the same generation as X360 controllers) was never supported by any Windows version.

            Anonymous

            >Completely wrong. Dualshock support didn't come to Windows until the later half of PS4 lifespan
Didn't the drivers release alongside Playstation Now? Which was 2014. Or did Playstation Now launch without PC drivers at first? I'll admit that I never used Playstation Now at launch.

              Anonymous

That's my point, the drivers were always there because it's a plug-and-play device, but they didn't allow Windows to recognize the controller as an input device for anything. PS Now was basically third-party software just like the Steam API that makes the games work with your DS4. If you went to any game, emulator or application outside these storefronts, it wouldn't work. So "official drivers" is pushing a bit far, you still need DS4Windows to this day to use the controller on a Windows environment.

                Anonymous

                >PS Now was basically third-party software
Third Party in the sense that it wasn't a Microsoft product. Sure.
But PS Now is Playstation. The PC drivers were an official Playstation product. Thus first party.

                >If you went to any game, emulator or application outside these storefronts, it wouldn't work. So "official drivers" is pushing a bit far, you still need DS4Windows to this day to use the controller on a Windows environment.
                What? No.
You can downright uninstall PSNow after you've installed the driver. And still use your Playstation controllers just fine.
Just a shame that Sony pushed for planned obsolescence by removing their official DS3 drivers from PSNow. So if you want the DS3 drivers in particular you need to hunt for an older version of PSNow. But for Playstation controllers after the PS3 that shouldn't be necessary.

      >I almost unironically miss when PC games just had numbered notations for PC games.
that didn't fix anything. each controller numbered its inputs differently.
all things could have been solved by microshit providing a tool to assign controller ports and buttons

Though PS games do occasionally have some frickery unique to them as and [...] point out, changing control schemes for the west was always a mistake.

      >just the button's position on the diamond
that makes it hard to make out for strings of inputs in fightan

        >that makes it hard to make out for strings of inputs in fightan
Fighters hardly factor into the topic of Sega vs. Nintendo layout at all considering pretty much all of them are made with arcade sensibilities in mind where cramming a vastly different button layout onto a console controller meant the developers had to include a robust custom binds system anyway, and thus in-game tend to refer to the buttons by their resulting action (light, heavy, medium, punch, kick, etc.) rather than their label on the controller itself.

yes, and thats completely fine to leave the button prompt for the actual controller in there.
but also displaying the physical location relative to the other face buttons ie, up, down, left or right, makes way more sense as you dont have to search by looking or even memorize them at all. you see which one to press in terms of direction and you just feel around with your thumb and press it. this should take less than a split second because you likely already have your thumb on the face buttons to begin with.
with how many accessibility features get crammed into each and every AAA game nowadays, its really surprising how such a simple yet effective addition hasnt become industry standard.
you want to widen your audience by making it easier for casual gamers to get into your games? instead of 100 different settings for handicapped people, maybe add something that gets someone not used to using controllers up to speed faster.

Why are you saying that like you've ever really looked at your controller for anything beside placement or fixing their default fricked up control scheme?

I have played thousands of hours of Minecraft and I cannot tell you what buttons do what if I don't look at my hands while playing. And that's a game I had to de-shit the controller layout for meaning I had to look at them to know what to fix at some point.

        >press the jump button
        >game never tells you what button is assigned to jumping

That's what trial and error is for. Why are you reading tutorial garbage, dipshits?

And no, unlocking stuff doesn't count either. If the game doesn't let you figure it out by pressing buttons from the first second then you shouldn't be using it and should judge the game based entirely on that.

Doesn't matter what they write on the screen later. Unlocks are for cosmetics and new game modes entirely, not how you are intended to defeat the final boss.

Maybe different brains just prioritize different things. The colors and shapes/letters contributed to my memorization just as much as placement did.

Yeah, that's great for one-button actions.
Good luck when you start getting into the multi-button combinations and context-specific actions like some games do.

Using shapes is fricking moronic and makes talking about games with your friends a huge pain in the ass. Instead of telling your friend the cheat code or cool combo is axyaby or whatever, now you have to say triangle, square, circle triangle or whatever the frick. Typing this shit out is even worse.

Is it really so hard to understand circles squares and triangles? They're arguably more universal than Latin letters.
The O being cancel and the X being confirm is moronic though, not sure why they changed it for the Western market after the PS1.

I get they wanted to be unique and have "their own" thing but was it really necessary of Nintendo to copy the Xbox controller and just jumble the buttons? It's needlessly confusing. Just use some of the 22 other letters?
