What? Consoles and PC were completely separate universes back during gen 6, and both extremely healthy.
It's the X360 what almost killed the PC games market.

NTA but you clearly missed the point of his post. Bootlegs and romhacks aren't a factor at all because they aren't genuine games.
Shovelware on the other hand was considerably worse than any other generation, bordering on completely unplayable where previously they were just bad games. Not to mention games that were considered shovelware like the seas of sportsball entries were propelled to the forefront during gen 6.

Shovelware literally killed the gaming industry multiple times before the 6th and you are so underage to think the 6th Gen had it worst?

PS2 actually wasn't easy to develope for. Sony apparently provided very little documentation and libraries unlike for PS1. PS3 had the same problem. Devs had to figure out a lot of stuff by themselves, which is why both PS2 and PS3 have tons of technically lacking games.

for me I feel like this was the start of buying a Nintendo console is to solely buy it to play Nintendo exclusive games (with SOME being an exception, such as Rare).
Think about it. Name any good games that appeared on Nintendo consoles which were exclusive to that console only and weren't focused on Nintendo mascots. Over half of the people who owned it only remember the N64 because of Ocarina of Time or SM64. (or any other Mario based games). Every review site just keeps saying that the best games are Super Mario 64, Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time, Starfox 64. They're all Nintendo mascot games. If it weren't for Rare being the absolute golden era of this thing it would only exist for Nintendo exclusives.
Same goes for the GameCube/Wii/Switch. Nothing else on there was worth playing except obviously the Nintendo exclusives. The rest is either shovelware trash or ports from PC games.
You remember Nintendo consoles because of Nintendo mascots. The modern industry isn't shit, their assortment of consoles led to some kind of weird exclusivity that knocked out every other rivaling mascot because of all the vibrant colors they started to use for theirs. And it grew, like a tumor. If it's a good thing or a bad thing, you decide. But I've seen so many interesting games with fun mascots just die out because nobody bats an eye on them.
Nintendo has become the weird fever dream that damaged the industry countless times by just rehashing the same formula and pumping it out onto newer consoles. They know the fans will buy it. They don't care. Look at the "New Super Mario Bros.2/U/Luigi/Deluxe" for instance. If you want a better example, listen to the castle music of all those games. It's literally the same. They recycle everything. And they know people will just buy it. No other gaming company in the world comes close to their level of domination. They took over the world. And it all just bottles down to the same rehashed formula they've used for decades.

The Wii did. It fucked everyone over by bringing home consoles to the mainstream and heavily appealing to casuals. Both MS and Sony tried their own version of that and failed miserably. Sony was smart enough to realize they needed to go back to the core gaming audience since the casual crowd would just drop it to mobile after the craze was over but Nintendo and MS tried to keep it going a generation. The switch saved Nintendo but MS is just now getting over it.

Did you see people over 60 playing PS2 games and being marketed to? or games for toddlers being pushed forward on the PS2? The Wii brought gaming to the mainstream just as mobile gaming was becoming a thing because it was just waggling a stick around and that made it accessible to literally anyone, that's what made it mainstream.
PS2 sold more, sure, but it was sold to people that actually played games, not old farts and babies that liked to waggle a remote.

Ever notice these gripes of inferior ports on the gamecube are always followed up with low effort shovelware ports as the counter point? True Crime NY is clearly a visually ambitious game. It's pushing some impressive effects regardless of platform (well, it's impressive for the gamecube at least) but then comes in these mediocre shovelware titles like monkey ball adventure 2 as if anyone gives a fuck. Oh we need to get the cursory RE4 namedrop too but having played both, the PS2 port is fine. Unlike say:

Which one forced developers to halt production of 2D games because Sony wanted the optics of the console to be about its 3D power?
The idea that games had to be made in a way to advertise the box you play them on is definitely something that is unwelcome in the industry.

PS1, you basically had to do deals with them to publish any 2D games on the console in the US in the first year or two.
They extended that to the PSP where they forbade 2D ports from releasing in the US if they didn't have any new content so games like the Suikoden I&II compilation and the BoF3 port were denied.

There was no one nexus point amongst platforms for where shit went wrong.
    >Genesis/Mega Drive
SoA and SoE partnering with EA to capitalize on and nurture the yearly sportsball model that still persists today. (Most of the EA Sports were multiplat but SEGA had lots of exclusive marketing deals, alongside contributing significantly to funding.)
    >PS1
Sony made game development far too open and cheap, and opened the floodgates to cheap western game development (Nintendo went in the opposite direction with locking down their development material and still being restricted to carts).
    >PS2
Sony coasted on the goodwill from PS1 despite now having an extremely shitty architecture to work with, and further strongarming the industry with moneyhats to make shit exclusive or intentionally worse/equal on other platforms. Plus beginning to leverage non-gaming media as a major selling point in a platform.
    >Xbox
The proper origin point for paid online on consoles.
    >Wii
Killed Nintendo's attempt to keep up with competing hardware, and (alongside the DS to a slightly lesser extent) beginning their heavy pandering towards non-gamer types.
    >iPhone
Also played a part in chasing non-gamer types, and helping to set the ground for heavy microtransaction integration.
    >PS3
Opening the door for California to usurp Playstation, and popularizing shallow western cinematic game design.
    >Xbox 360
Giving Call of Duty and Battlefield huge boosts into nearly sportslike levels of lazy frequent releases.
    >Valve/Steam
Another major contributor to the horror of microtransactions, especially with popularizing lootboxes.

And this doesn't even get much into purely third-party entities who further ruined the industry either.

      >iPhone
      >helping to set the ground for heavy microtransaction integration.
EA did this in 2008 with Fifa 09, long before the iphone micro-transaction hellfield really started to take hold.

Otherwise the rest sounds about right.

True. I guess I'd revise iPhone to discuss how it being the starting point of the modern smartphone doomed everything digitally accessible to ultra-simplified, braindead, consumer-disrespectful repetitive schlock in general, but that's well outside the scope of just a vidya thread.

The leap to true 3D in the previous generation was a far bigger deal. Games like Unreal were getting drooled over for their graphics years before the PS2 came out. Remember the old article that claimed SotN was automatically worse than Castlevania 64 just because it was 2D?
6th-gen graphics were just a refinement of what was already there, not a sea change. A huge refinement for sure, but still a refinement nonetheless.

The ps2 obviously, the ps1 isn't entirely free from fault either especially given many had to replace the faulty early units,(which is also a thing with the ps2) because of the defect but the ps2 came with its own host of issues
    >brought vidya not only into the mainstream but also introduced third worlders to gaming, an issue we still have to deal with today
    >started the media machine nonsense that holds consoles back
    >taught people to accept mediocrity when pressured as the ps2 versions of games were often the worst but also sold the most
    >prompted Sony to pander completely to the casual audiences, something they still rely on today
    >because of the difficulty making games for the system many developers and games died because they didn't recoup losses
    >despite having the worst versions of games that ran horrendously Sony marketing constantly pushed graphics
    >gave EA a genuine foothold in this industry as Fifa games began to skyrocket into popularity while also having less competition than ever.
It completely fucked the industry hard except for probably Nintendo since they never stopped catering to core audiences despite the failures like the GC.

        NTA but
was mainstream as hell way before the ps2
No not really. The ps1 sold a lot but the games weren't massive 20-30m sellers like they were on the ps2. In fact I think sm64 was the best selling game that gen with around 11m so that should tell you the difference.
        machine predated the ps2 tol
Also false, disc based systems at most could also play music which was understandable since some CD games also came packed with the OST like Sonic CD for instance. The ps2 is where it truly started to go out of control with it not only having audio compatibility but DVD compatibility which was a major selling point for the system.
        >>snes and 64 ports were inferior to their respective counterparts
Okay? Ignoring the fact that the SNES/Genesis games often weren't ports and were made by two different studios with the SNES versions being superior in most cases no one defended them or called them good like you would see for ps2 versions of games.
        >>Sony catered to the casual audience hard since the ps1. Everybody did.
Sony was the only company to laser focus on the casual audience from the start anon. Nintendo and Sega still very much appealed to the core because they had their own niches to fill and even when Microsoft came along they tried to appeal to them first and foremost even going so far as to give sega a platform after they were pushed out by Sony. This continued into the late 360 era where they were still getting niche games.

You Sony fans don't know a thing do you.

Where do you see this? Literally the only case I can think of is RE4, which had extra content that may pull someone towards. Nobody thought the ps2 had better hardware than the Xbox.

            >Super Mario world rest confortably at 20m. So yeah, always mainstream.
No, not at all. The SNES was about a 40m selling console? No one would consider that mainstream. What you're seeing is the power of bundles, the same tactic Sony employs now to get their games to sell similar numbers and world was bundled a lot.

            >Multimedia consoles predate the ps2, so yeah.
Yes as I previously stated due to some games containing the OST. The ps2 was the first with DVD playback making it a true media machine capable of playing at least 3 different forms of media.
            >Where do you see this?
Have you ever talked about multiplats for that generation with anyone before. It's rare to see people not praise the ps2 versions over xbox or even GC versions.
One specific one that comes to mind, and no, this isn't the only example just the first one I thought of, many thought the xbox version of Sonic Heroes was worse than the ps2 version for some odd reason when the ps2 version not only ran at horrendous framerates but also lacked effects and textures the other versions had.
            >Nobody thought the ps2 had better hardware than the Xbox.

No, no they weren't. They were all flashy yet simple games like Sly, Ratchet and Jak not to mention the copious amounts of shovelware they made like buzz, hit shots golf, the eyetoy games and so on.
These were the first party games Sony wanted to sell, if they had anything directed at the core it was immediately placed in the no hopers bin like the majority of JS games.

Sony fostered key relationships which saw joint development between SCE and partnered studios to help make the best games possible. Like it or not, Konami was a big part of this and pushed out some of their best games at the time and Sony didn't even require them to be exclusive for more than a year. If you were alive at the time you'd know this cuz they talked about it at E3.

Imagine the PS2 trying to play something as intense as F-Zero GX.

I didn't even mention any third party developers anon. Also that's debatable, even with MGS only 3 was the stand out title while 2 was always extremely divisive amongst fans.

How the fuck are these 3 games any different from spyro, crash or ape escape? You know these were ps1 first party core games right?
                >also bringing up party games as if party games weren't more relevant in every other console sans xbox

                >You know these were ps1 first party core games right?
                No, I don't because they aren't.
You've listed exactly one first party ps game, Ape escape. Crash and Spyro were not only made by Naughty Dog and Insomniac before Sony bought them making them third party games but they were also owned by Universal.
Ape Escape also didn't have particularly spectacular sales either.
                >bringing up party games as if party games weren't more relevant in every other console sans xbox
No, no they weren't. Buzz alone had twelve entries on the ps2, thirteen including the multiplat.
Hell, even on Nintendo systems you'd have to get multiple series together to rival that number.

PS1 saved us from an even worse fate of the movie games. CD-ROM = MOVIE
PS2 was quite bad with how it was terrible to program for

But it's the PS360 that ruined gaming, and mostly not even on purpose.
With achivements, developers were able to track exactly what the gamers were doing, and they grossly misinterpreted everything they saw and fucked with the games in the process.
The big one was the fact only 15-20% of the consumers actually play games to completion.
They understood that this means the games were not being appreciated and ruined everything to try to force people into completing the games.
They never understood that most people just like to enjoy the gameplay as it is instead of autistically going on a 20 hour journey to the end.

PS2 is by far the best console ever made, and I'm saying that as a PC master race that never owned a console. Y'all bros probably don't even realize that the PS2 quickly became 1 of the cheapest DVD players you could buy, AND it could play the latest games AND it was backwards compatible AND you could play online for free.

ps2 started the idea that a video game console should do more than play video games, since they heavily marketed ps2 as a cheaper DVD player. note that I am not calling the PS2 a bad console, but they were the jumping off point for consoles becoming the shitboxes they are today.

FF7's appeal was that it had a large budget with flashy cinematics. It is the reason why gaming is in the state that it is in today, it's the first big "AAA" game where the advertising budget alone was more than most other titles entire budget. Sony even leveraged the hype of the game to try to fuck Sega by releasing Final Fantasy 8 on the exact same day as the Dreamcast in America.

The AAA war started right then and there, where Sega made Panzer Dragoon Saga to try to compete. Then Shenmue followed.

The gameplay itself barely changed between 6 and 7 meaning the only appeal lies in aesthetics. That said, they were much worse than the previous SNES games in that regard due to the fact that it was a fairly early ps1 game.

This is about Final Fantasy 7 being the first big AAA movie game. An industry defining game that changed the shape of gaming forever because the marketing worked. Ocarina of Time isn't in this discussion, stop trying to shoehorn it in.

                >This is about Final Fantasy 7 being the first big AAA movie game.
Which it wasn't. PC had already been overrun by literal movie games with bloated budgets since the early '90s thanks to hacks like Chris Roberts.

            >Except that Yakuza was also on PS2, which is basically the same game.
Not really. Yakuza is actually good.

          >Shenmue was more of a cinematic experience than FFX
I love a good shitpost anon. Keep it up with your groundbreaking contrarianism

Shenmue 2 had TWO FUCKING HOURS of Naughty Dog/Half-Life style walk-and-talk in a boring forest.

And FFX had 11 hours of cutscenes, what's your point?

The best time in gaming was the Holy War

Nintendo DS vs PSP, to this day nobody can certainly say who won other than the customers.

Shovelware is not an argument for any console being good or bad.
All that matters is how many good games a console has.
98% of any consoles library is crap. You dont have to play the crap

    >popular = BAD
    Both were good consoles.
PS1 also has a bunch weird, experimental games.

Neither did. Great systems that actually went against Nintendo's outdated standards.

Even though the PS1 could play music, the PS2 really solidified the "console as a media center and not just a gaming device" phenomenon that persists to this day.

PS1-5 are still the best consoles of their generation. I may let 360 tie with PS3 though, they were both equally good.

PS2 because Sony lied about its specs and other things to damage the Dreamcast with retailers.

Microsoft screwed Sega with the usual "embrace, extend, extinguish" maneuver.
Of course, it's partially Sega's fault for letting in such an obvious snake in the grass.

          >Microsoft screwed Sega with the usual "embrace, extend, extinguish" maneuver.
Didn't really work out too well considering they still exist.

They don't make consoles anymore and are a shell of what they once were, while Microsoft was able to slither into Sega's spot and subvert the game industry into the current westernized nightmare.

No that was sega fucking sega over.
segaUSA were the ones hell bent on getting Microsoft involved.
They convinced segaJP to let Microsoft in the door. Then once they saw the DC blueprints they up and ran leaving sega in the shit.

The dc got its cheapo modems but its online which Microsoft were meant to have handled got dropped and sega had to make the shitty dream key very quickly.

segaUSA got Microsoft involved. They must have know what would happen getting into bed with them.

            Sega screwed sega

Yes, like I said, Sega deserves blame too for letting in an obvious snake in the grass. Doesn't change the fact that Microsoft is one of the worst corporations on the planet.
