PS3 was their last good console and ever since they moved their HQ to Cali all they've been doing is pandering to the demographic you've mentioned. Ironic.
Anyway, OP, if you can afford both of them, that would be ideal. Wii for most of your emulating needs, PS3 for whatever the Wii cannot handle and on top of that you get some decent fricking PS3 games to enjoy too.
>to a CRT
you know that shit is pointless right now? just save up enough money to get a decent tv already instead of grasping onto lost tech that won't be of any use to anyone but collectors and autists studying how they worked
Plus why pay out the nose for a high end modern display when you can use a cheap as free CRT that has had the traits you want in a good gaming display the whole time?
>Plus why pay out the nose for a high end modern display when you can use a cheap as free CRT that has had the traits you want in a good gaming display the whole time?
At this point, LCDs are cheaper and more common than CRTs. I literally got a 42 inch for free. I haven't seen a CRT in years in the wild.
This. Retro video games are pointless. Why are you people holding onto outdated games from your childhood that literally nobody is going to care about 100 years from now? Go play more polished modern games. Or better yet, get married and have kids.
I hate to admit it, but I bought a few ports for the switch recently (Ghouls n Ghosts and Thinder Force 4) and they have really REALLY good CRT+smoothing filters. I have a CRT (in storage, takes up too much room to have out all the time now) and considered myself a bit of a snob about it but I honestly think those filters are close enough to the real thing that it doesn't tickle my autism
Why do I keep seeing people here saying that the Wii + PS3 is the perfect combo to do everything?
The Wii is very good at a lot of things, I’ll simp for it all day. But it can’t even handle PS1 at a decent framerate and 90% of the N64 library thats not already on virtual console just cant play at all. MAME is a fricking mess with titles either playing perfectly or not at all. Saturn is experimental, unplayable and not going anywhere from here. Same with DS.
I know all PS3s can do PS1 natively but I thought only the 80gb fats can do PS2? Do the slims do it too? Am I missing something there?
What other systems does PS3 do? Saturn? DS? PSP? Jaguar? OG Xbox? I’m trying to figure out why people say it’s such a good combo with wii.
Even the PS1 on PS3 has its drawbacks, namely not being compatible with certain ripping standards popular now, like multi track ISO's, I'd honest reccomend people wanting to go this route just get a PS1 with a modchip or tonyhax or something and save themselves the headache.
You can but joining them has mixed results on the PS3, oftentimes it'll play tracks out of order and stuff like that. I know there used to be PC software that could package pkg files to create PSN style games that I think solved it ssometimes. But chd's are obviously a no-go.
PS3 can run more games naturally
(PS2,PS1 and some PSP games)
Wii can Run GC discs natively and VC ports of retro titles, also its extremely compatible with many types of retro controllers.
I prefer the Wii tbh.
I don't keep up with PS3 softmodding, are there better alternatives to it's native PS1/2 emulation yet? I love my triple but the built in emulation isn't anywhere as good as a lot of the alternatives on PC
Why, when people want to get a piece of hardware to emulate old consoles, do people think they should buy a Wii, let alone a PS3?
Get a Retroid Pocket 2+ or equivalent.
Pay $100 (more than Wii, less than PS3).
Plug into your TV via HDMI (unlike Wii).
Attach any controller you want via Bluetooth or USB (unlike Wii or PS3).
Emulate literally any console through Dreamcast and PSP because you're using Android (unlike Wii or PS3, which have far fewer emulators and shit compatibility).
Take it on the go and play it as a handheld (unlike Wii or PS3).
>Plug into your TV via HDMI (unlike Wii)
figure it out yet
yes, a cheap chinese Wii2HDMI converter with noise is just as good as a native HDMI interface in any modern device.

How easy is it to mod a PS3? Can it be softmodded? Can you play PS3 backups on it? Is there a point to modding one if you already have a dedicated emulation machine? Someone on Marketplace is selling one for cheap and I'm wondering if I should get it.
Basically it depends on how old it is and whether it can downgrade to system version 3.55 or earlier or not. They have a working downgrader but can't install custom firmware on anything higher than that still. I haven't looked super close at it because I have two fats, but I think that rules out super slims and late slim models that ship with 3.61 or higher.
I got a Fat PS3 from Japan and it was super easy. The games you just load them to the hard drive via ethernet. Can load PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. However, some maintenance is needed from the user's part since PS2 games make the PS3 melt. For longevity's sake, I found someone selling a PS2 for $30.
>for longevity's sake
I've always babied all my consoles and the only two I ever had die on me were my ps1 and ps2. Almost everyone's PS2 shit the bed by the late 2000s from usind them as a dvd player
OP here, sorry for the lack of detail but I was mainly asking about 4th gen emulation and below, I already own most of the more modern console.
I also already own a PS3, a Wii and a CRT, so it is not about money but about which one should I invest time in to transform into an emulation machine
Wii being a standard arm based cpu with a bigger homebrew scene makes it the obvious choice if you don't need ps3's native ps1 emulation and raw horsepower for 5th gen.
I just wish the PS3 didn't add lag to PS1 and PS2 games because of the wireless controller. Some people don't mind it but for me it's unplayable. Back to the Pi for me since Wii can't even do PS1.
Wii because it can actually do 240p

Who the frick doesn't have a computer that can't run 5th gen games and earlier by now?
ps3 and wii have one use, they don't need a converter to hookup to a crt. if they're hooked up to an lcd like any computer yes it's stupid.
>to a CRT

We ARE the collectors and autists though.

Welcome to /vr/, you little homosexual.
The advantage of a Wii is that it's super cheap, usually only $30 or so.
Yeah, any cheap laptop out now can do it. Wtf
The PS3 can't even emulate n64
It probably could if someone wrote a decent emulator for it.
Ps3 would've been great for ps1 emulation if it could output 240p. Oh well.
Why do I keep seeing people here saying that the Wii + PS3 is the perfect combo to do everything?

Wii is 16 years old.
Last time I touched a girls boob the Wii was the latest console.
And people say the Wii isn't retro.
On CRT, the Wii. On HDTV, the PS3.
PS3 can run more games naturally
(PS2,PS1 and some PSP games)

I mean this with the most genuine of intention.

these
>pay 2 emulate
No thank u.
You can grab emulators through retail mode for free.
see picrel and then cope and seethe

I even forgot one...
NO MODDING REQUIRED
>Wii2HDMI
He still doesn't get it.
Alright, now do Gamecube on your android chink garbage. Show me lightgun support too.
OP asked about a machine for emulation, not playing GameCube games. Clearly a Wii is the best machine for that.

Wii isn't ARM.
I don't care about the homebrew scene I just want to play Genesis games, is the PS3 a better system if it have more horsepower than the Wii ?
Wii can do 240p natively and has the best genesis emulator, runs all titles flawlessly
PS3 can't do 240p natively
Shame that recent Pis have dreadful analog video support. Last one worth using on a CRT is the 3b.
I just wish the PS3 didn't add lag to PS1 and PS2 games because of the wireless controller. Some people don't mind it but for me it's unplayable. Back to the Pi for me since Wii can't even do PS1.
is Wii any good as a web server?
