of the two, heavily modded Rimworld is the best. But heavily modded Rimworld is also a pain in the ass and if you mod it heavily enough you're looking at 30 minute load times, so it's a game where you plan out that you want to play it about an hour from now and you want to play it for a few hours.

Dorf Fort if you want to drawgay shit that happens, play out a story, print out maps and spend hours pouring over npc family trees in LegendsViewer
ONI if you want to build cool machines and frick with pressure/vacuum, melting or freezing things, gas & liquids

it literally tells you all options available on the current menu you're on, and they're hotkey
90% of the time you're using [d]esignate > [d]ig or [b]uild > [w]orkshop anyway.
mouse-based right click menu trees are moronic, slow and inefficient
it's a 50/50 for me.
I can understand z levels added another level of potentially unnecessary complexity to base design. But it solved the problems of resource depletion and resource location like rarer minerals and lava being deeper.
Still, I think I remember my favorite minecraft mod that allowed you to import dwarf fortress builds into it and I had a blast with both games.
Has the cave system FPS nuke been fixed yet?
Has the broken intensely confusing soldier menu and horrible korean grinding-level training XP been fixed yet?

Rimworld wins. I played so much DF, but I just can't go back to moronic dorf combat. All I want is a force move and stand ground command for squads, so my melee dorfs don't run into their deaths. I just can't stand the lack of control anymore.
Playing df as an extremely risk averse person is so boring. I wish I could love that game but letting a fortress be destroyed by a giant insectoid demon with the head of a zebra because a dwarf didn't fill in one tile on the bottom floor is gutting even if it makes for a cool legend. Much easier to just make some shops and farm plump helmets for a few hours with 0 risk.
DF is boring because if you know how to play and are actually trying not to die it's basically impossible for your fortress to fail, leading to the slow inevitability of fps death because the game is a poorly coded unoptimised kitchen sink mess.
Closest you can get is limit your population, periodically destroy all items of clothing and run dfhack cleanup scripts, choose a small embark and cross your fingers.

Extreme levels of detail, a much larger scale, and way more ways to flex autism? Dwarf Fortress, hands down.
But I'll always enjoy staring at my small, comfy Rimworld colony for hours on end.
