Sonic CD still has PCM tracks for the 'past stages'. I think the 8-channel PCM APU in the Sega-CD was also used for sound effects. But it could also be used for streaming audio samples, like voices and music samples.

This Past track uses the Yamaha chip as well as the PSG and the Sega CD audio chip.

Snatches uses a lot of chip tunes too. There are a few music tracks stored as redbook, but those generally also contain voice acting. But most of the game music is chiptune.

i really like how the past stages use midi tracks, it actually makes them feel older, i wonder if that was intentional or not

The cotton 2 engine had a great sounding electric guitar.

    ?t=120
Meant to start at the 2min mark if it does not start there. Basically from the 2:00 mark to the end of the song. Another great one is Vapor Trail on Genesis which doesn't have lots of music but has some really choice licks and extremely tight composition.

Both tracks there for Vapor Trail I feel are extremely inspired. The deliberation in both songs progression is tangible, distinct and well paced.

Very cool, the lead guitar sound they use reminds me of a not-crushed Sonic Battle guitar tone lol
Also they got the intro to Paranoid slightly wrong, but pretty much everyone has.

Also this is the winner for me too, but I think it's composition rather than realistic guitar sounds.

F-Zero X stands head and shoulders above the rest but I'm guessing they used a huge chunk of the cart just for the samples.

It also gets to a point where if you have enough space it's not impressive at all to have realistic sounding sequenced music, because you can just use samples for everything.

Except soundfonts are an actual thing, moron. The word applies to sequenced audio formats that use sampled PCM audio (ie, MIDI, Super NES, some PS1 soundtracks, etc). Not all audio formats do this. The word exists to describe the ones that do.

      >established term
It's not established. Only a few isolated people are using the term. If we band together we can prevent it from becoming established.

      >Only a few isolated people are using the term.
In other words you're not a musician and don't know what you're talking about.

        >how fricking new are you, soundfonts have been a thing in music for what, thirty years now?
Yeah, well in the era of Retro Games, particularly with 16-bit consoles such as the SNES, "sound fonts" were not a thing. Sound font came from Creative Labs and the Sound Blaster on PC, not on SNES, and it was originally specific to midi, not SNES music, which, despite what zoomers may have suffered to believe, did not use midi. When talking about SNES music it's more accurate to use the general term "sample" rather the inaccurate despite newly trendy term "soundfont".

        Anonymous

        >The word applies to sequenced audio formats that use sampled PCM audio (ie, MIDI, Super NES)
MIDI doesn't have anything to do with PCM audio. It's a digital protocal for sequencing notes and does not contain any sample or instrument data.

SNES music also does not use MIDI in any significant capacity. It uses the SPC format which is more similar to "tracker" music (MODs, S3Ms) popularized on the Amiga computers.

Soundfont is a neologism popular with Zoomers. It's not the worst term to use to describe the overall timbre of a game's soundtrack without getting into the specifics of how a game's music is generated, e.g. does the console have onboard dedicated oscillators (chiptunes, the FM synthesis on Sega Genesis)? Is it using short sequenced PCM samples (SNES)? Is it using streaming PCM CD audio (Playstation)?

Regardless, due to your factual inaccuracy and r*ddit speaking style ("actual thing"), you are in fact the moron in this situation. My condolences.

          >It uses the SPC format which is more similar to "tracker" music (MODs, S3Ms) popularized on the Amiga computers.
I must correct you, the SPC format was created by people who ripped music from old games, it represents the low level instructions that run on the SPC700 chip. Composers of SNES music would have written using sound tools provided by Nintendo or using their own internally developed tools. Nobody would have written in SPC format because didn't appear until the late 90s when SNES emulation became wide spread.

          >MIDI doesn't have anything to do with PCM audio. It's a digital protocal for sequencing notes and does not contain any sample or instrument data.
MIDI doesn't have any official sounds for output but MIDI playback on modern devices uses sampled PCM for the most part. This is why MIDI soundfonts exist in the first place. Try unpacking one sometime.
I don't get why you're so set on minimizing the English language. Words exist to describe stuff. If you want to differentiate between sounds created from true synthesized audio and sounds that are just sampled, the word has a use.
