The one which every controller copied for the next 30 years, of course.

But isnt having 6 buttons better than 4?

Wasnt 4 buttons chosen because it was easier to mass market appeal to the lowest common denominator?

Snes does have 6 buttons, two of them are on the shoulder. It also has an extra button, “select”.
Genesis is still the better of the two.

Nah, probably just because the SFC was way more popular in Japan.

      >except for Nintendo themselves
      lol

Genesis has the far superior and comfy d-pad and better ergonomics so it gets my vote.
Snes did popularize shoulder buttons though, and that is significant.
These days I use retrobit Genesis controller with shoulder buttons for 16 bits and will never touch a snes pad again for as long as I live.

Genesis hands down. SNES isn’t bad mind you, you just can’t beat the Genesis D-Pad and button layout.

It's much easier to press three buttons at the same time on SNES than the Genesis six button controller.

No it isn't. Having to press L1 + R and X would be more difficult than 3 of the Genesis face buttons.

        >bottom pic
This looks moronic. Holding the controller in the air while using your fingers without gripping the controller with them to press the buttons? Try that and see how "comfy" that is.
        >watermark at the bottom
        Explains everything.

You're supposed to place your controller in your lap when you hold it overhand. But I agree, it's still very awkward. Just get an arcade stick if you want to use your fingers, it's actually designed for that purpose.

People give the original genesis controller too much flack. Sure it only has the same amount of buttons as the NES, but the thing fits so well in my hands and smashing those fat ass buttons is very satisfying. SNES controller begins to cramp after a while due to it being so small and everything is just a little bit too mushy, but the convex/concave button layout on the NA version is probably my favorite diamond button layout on any controller period. I've never used a Genesis 6 button controller. I've been thinking about getting myself one but I don't really play fighters so...

They're real nice. I think the 3 button feels just a little higher quality, but the 6 button is great. It's practically just a Saturn controller without shoulder buttons.
I can't really fault you for not picking one up. The only non-fighting games I can think of off the top of my head that used six buttons are Comix Zone and 32X Doom.

        Zombies ate my Neighbors too.
Doesn’t require it but it might as well, because on three button you have to do button combos to change weapons and items which is a nightmare on the fly.

I need a 6 button controller for my Genesis; are the retro bit ones good?

      In a word: yes.
I haven’t checked legit genesis controller prices in a while but last I checked they were cheap, why not get an oem one?

They both seems to be the same price point from what I have seen.

The SNES controller because it had six buttons and came with the system on launch.

people sleep on the pc engine controllers, those are pretty comfy, especially the avenue pad 3

the d-pad is better than genesis and the buttons are better than snes

I think it's pretty on par with both of those controllers, personally. It is a fantastic controller, though. I picked up a PC Engine last year and have been consistently surprised with how comfortable and responsive the controller is. It runs laps around the NES controller.

Is PC Engine/ TurboGrafx comparable to the NES? i thought it was more powerful than a NES but less powerful than a SNES

That is correct, but it also has a CD add-on that brings it above SNES imo.

Castlevania Rondo of Blood is the "mandatory" one even if you end up not liking it, but there's also tons of great shmups like Sapphire, Cotton, Super Air Zonk, Gate of Thunder, and Lords of Thunder (also on SEGA CD). The Valis series may be worth checking out too.

Three button Genesis is the definitive shmup controller, rivaled only by the TG-16 controller I guess though I've never actually used that one to compare. The six button isn't bad but it really does feel excessive and cramped, outside of fighting games and Comix Zone there's zero reason to have that many face buttons. Very glad I finally made the upgrade after using it for over a year for Genesis emulation. The SNES controller is fine too for those games I guess, but the three button Genesis is probably still my favorite.

Genesis one, because of the popularity of fighting games in that era. Shoulder buttons don't feel like the right substitute to this day.

Why did they stop making controllers with concave buttons?

      Anonymous

Because it was too comfy, and you could actually press the buttons responsively. Thats why modern games jump for you, and never allow you to fail

No need to sound like a b***h. I'm not gonna approve of your post just because you're agreeing with me. I like plenty of new games.

they didn't, although that depends on if you consider the dpad a button

Ergonomics: Genesis 3 button > Genesis 6 button > Snes

Dpad: Both Genesis controllers > Snes

Button placement: Snes > Genesis 6 button > Genesis 3 button

Visual design: Snes purple > either Genesis

but that's just my autistic opinion

6 button controller is better, but back then it didn't really matter since only a small part of the genesis library supports the extra buttons.

I used to love the SNES control back in the day but I'm sold on the six button Megadrive now. The USB version has shoulder buttons too, pretty much perfect.
