Who gets the weapon upgrade

I doubt there's a "correct" option, as it would depend on the game. But I think its interesting to see the priorities of players and how they approach party building

        >I know it doesn't make much sense for most videogames, but again, its just to make the decision more difficult/interesting
It makes the question fundamentally flawed though, the question is weighted toward picking the average character.
Obviously at that point i'd have to see the actual stats to determine how stupid it would be to give it to the strong character. If it only boosts his attack a couple points while doubling the other guy then it would be pointless.
But at it's core the implication of this question is whether you'd prefer a party to be more balanced or one that is max/min. Max/min is usually the way to break most games.

Ideally I want to go all in on the strong character because then i can stack different buffs and focus on them being my primary damage dealer. They should spend the whole fight just hitting with their strongest attack and if possible having buffs cast on them.
The weak character should of course just be my healer since I need a healer anyway and i'm not losing anything from them.
The average character is basically dps and cannon fodder, but can also be a backup healer. They're entirely a supporting role for the other two.
If we're ignoring things like magic and damage types, ultimately the only two characters that matter in my party are my healer and my strongest damage dealer. I can win any fight eventually as long as those two don't go down.

          Anonymous

          >It makes the question fundamentally flawed though, the question is weighted toward picking the average character.
I disagree, I think that even with that hypothetical there's a strong argument to be made for the weakest character rather than the 2 or 3. Although, as you say, that's because I much prefer balanced parties rather than min maxing, reason being that I prefer to have each turn with each character to be meaningful rather than twiddling my thumbs waiting only for the turns of the strong character. Again, it depends on the game

I think you made a mistake assuming "the weak one must be the healer", since it seems you are only thinking about "weak means dealing little damage". I would never consider a crucial healer a "weak character that struggles", so in this regard it must be understood that the character is not a "healer/buffbot" but "this character is struggling and can't contribute to the party except with the boost from the magic item"

For example they could all be healers, and the item/weapon could be a new spell that enhances their healing/buffs

In no circumstance should you give it to the weak character. For the strong vs average character, it depends on the game. If giving the strongest weapon to the strongest character can allow you to cross damage threshold breakpoints (eg oneshotting as opposed to two shotting a creature), then you stack it all on one character. If it doesn't do that, then it makes more sense to give it to the average character so you have two strong characters. The latter is especially true in tactics games, where positioning matters and having more strong units > a single strong unit.

      Anonymous

      >there isn't one that can use it better
that's the issue, what does it mean "can use it better"?
You could argue that the weak character uses it better by getting the biggest upgrade and equalizing it with the rest so this character is finally useful, and the strongest uses it better because it min maxes even further and reaches a potential that the third character isn't capable of reaching

        Anonymous

        >that's the issue, what does it mean "can use it better"?
I meant it could have some bonus that stacks with another item, skill, etc.

        >You could argue that the weak character uses it better by getting the biggest upgrade and equalizing it with the rest so this character is finally useful, and the strongest uses it better because it min maxes even further and reaches a potential that the third character isn't capable of reaching
        Let's say we start with: 3/10, 8/10 and 5/10
With the item we can get:
        >5/10, 8/10, 5/10
        >3/10, 10/10, 5/10
        >3/10, 8/10, 7/10
In the first two cases we only have one particularly strong character, if he dies we are screwed. In the third case we have two characters with high DPS and a third one who could be used for kiting strong enemies. If one high DPS char dies we have another one so we are more likely to win.

Here's how the options would play out
    >Weakest character
You now have two meh units and one strong one, but you made little to no progress otherwise. If the enemies scale at all, you're fricked.
    >Strongest character
You now have one good character and two shitters. This is fine as long as your one good character can carry on her own until your shitters can catch up, but you do run the risk of not reaching any important thresholds or even being in a overkill scenario with your good character, effectively making the upgradd less useful.
    >Average character
You now have two average characters and one cannon fodder. As long as your average is strong enough to keep up with enemy scaling, you should be fine due to the average characters covering one another's weakness. However, it can still be a lot less efficient than making one super strong character, and you're going to struggle if your new average can't deal with very strong enemies that a single powerhouse could potentially deal with.

    Generally I'd say 2>3≥>>1

      Anonymous

Not a bad take, but I envisioned it differently. I'm assuming that there are many other party members that the power level of those three in the options are gauged against, so it would go like this:

      >weakest

I give it to the strong character because making the strong even stronger will expand our potential. Expending resources on the Untermensch is a waste.

  48. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

The weak character, because the question states that they will result in the greatest increase in performance overall. Or the average character if this is supposed to emulate the original question, because obviously I am going to select the optimal increase. The question doesn't really explain if the difference in overall performance between the two, it just depends on what strengthens the party most. I would also say there is a benefit to spreading out potential, in case someone goes down or something.

  49. 2 weeks ago

Marginal upgrades are only worth shit when only minmaxing is left so giving the weapon to strong character is only worth it if it enables some breakpoints
Wasting a good gear on some loser just so it performs barely on par with mediocrities is a big ass waste of gear, stick to spamming healing items and being a punching bag
So only one logical choice is left (mid character)

calculate dps for each, see who benefits the most simple as

      Anonymous

what does it mean to benefit the most?
because in this case the one that gets the biggest increase is character 1, who goes from dealing the least to dealing as much as 3

or maybe its 2, because it allows them to break the damage cap

or maybe its 3, because it allows them to reach the damage cap with 2

The weakest character is just a vending machine in battle anyway and will get benched by another character you get later on.

  52. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Depends on the party size. If I can bench the weak character I'd give it to the average character to increase dps output. Weak if I'm forced to use them and they aren't a heal / buff bot. If the strong character is getting huge crits though buffing their dps might be the best.

  53. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

There's an argument to be made for all three.

    >weak character
If you need to do a specific amount of damage before a time limit, IE against Odin in FF4 or 5, then you want all your characters hitting for max damage, and the weak character should be able to do some damage if your strongest is indisposed.

    >strong character
If an enemy counters with a strong attack after so many player hits, then you want as much power as possible behind each hit. Also works if you need a high amount of damage to penetrate enemy defense.

    >average character
Same concept behind the weak character. You give it to this guy if the weak character is filling another role, like he's the designated healer or the revival guy.

I would send the other units to camp unless their presence was required for buffs or synergies, which is likely.

3 because the image says he specializes in that type of item. This image is challenging because you don't know the archetypes of each character. For example, there would be no point in giving a strong melee weapon to 1 if she is the healer/caster, and 2 and 3 are melee fighters.

Without any information about what the different characters do or what kind of game it is the most generic answer would be to give it to the weakest character if that improves the average damage of the party the most. Giving it to the second character would win out if their unique use of it is useful, like if they have an AoE attack and nobody else does.

because "I choose an option that isn't there" is done by smartasses that don't want to engage with the dilemma because they believe to be above it

Its a dilemma because there isn't a definitive answer. Its good if you don't like any of the options given, and the interesting part is what decision you would make when none is fully satisfactory. Jumping with "My solution is that I remake the entire question" or "the question is fricking moronic because I can't win with a correct solution" is peak brainlet, severe moronation, as there isn't supposed to be a "solution" and you are too dumb to understand the point of sharing opinions

Saying "I'm unable to choose because I lack info" does the opposite of what you think: it makes you look fricking dumb, because you can see hundreds of replies of people perfectly capable of making a choice, some of which said "if it was like this I would choose A, if it wasn't like this I would choose B"

So if I have this right:

#1 gets to be more than just the guy that spams potions on the actually useful party members

#2 gets boosted to the absolute pinnacle, leaving the others in the dust

#3 gets access to a unique ability or trait that the weapon only grants to them, and it's useful enough to put them on par with #2

I'm actually somewhat torn between #1 and #3. I generally don't like having a useless member in the party because over time it also makes me like the character less. But the unique quality granted to #3 is apparently broadly useful and probably can't be obtained elsewhere. #2 just feels like a trap because if they die or get hard countered in a fight you're stuck struggling with the other two with gimped equipment.

I think I'd choose #1 unless the unique skill granted to #3 has some kind of out-of-combat use that can be helpful in the overworld.

The weakest gets the most net benefit for the party as a whole so them. Maybe C if the special was worth it but it says directly that A gains the most, even more than C+special.
But the part about this being a rare weapon that B has very limited upgrades for is interesting. It might be worth taking the short term loss of giving the weapon to B immediately but have a stronger late game party overall.

  77. 2 weeks ago

    The weak character
A strong character getting marginally stronger isn't a significant benefit, but a weak character can go from being a waste of a party slot to actually contributing. You're functionally giving yourself a new party member by upgrading their gear, that's worth a lot more than 5% extra damage or defense on one character

      Anonymous

      I generally agree with you.
There are games that its not worth it tho, like in Fire emblem, where you can just bench the weak shitter and never have to worry about them, and thus it helps more to further improve the broken units to breeze through the game

  78. 2 weeks ago

The weakest because a stronger party is better. If there are 100 enemies to kill, the strong character can only kill 1 per turn. Making him stronger still only kills 1 per turn. It's over kill. If all 3 were "strong enough" then you could get 3 kills per turn.

What if the weakest party member is a buff or healbawd, they don't need more damage to fulfil their role. Its a weapon not armor, if they aren't going to attack half the time then there is no need to upgrade

2 is the best choice because it maximizes damage and frees the weak character up to focus on support skills instead of trying to be just average dps.

If I had super powerful armor I would put it on the weak character and make them spec into defense options for the party, so that the strong and average can focus on attacking. The average character would get a mix of damage and healing so that they can dps with the strong but also drop back and toss out the occasional heal if needed

          >I can't think of a game that does this
Imagine its not a weapon, but a learnable skill or spell, in that situation it has to be given to a character and it doesn't replace their current equipment that can be transfered to the other weaker characters

Or just a situation that all characters are actually using the same weapons and equipment and they only differ in personal stats, do you give the brave axe to the weak fighter, the average fighter or the strong fighter?

    >option 1. Weak (W) becomes Average (A). Party (P) = A+Strong (S)+A
    >option 2. S becomes Strongest (St). P = WStA

no, the question is well written. Don't know why you were the only one to not understand that the "improves the most" means that the character receives their biggest possible personal upgrade

    1) is the worst option. Almost never do you want another average party member. The only thing I can think of is if the game imposes some kind of minimum power level requirement for every party member, but I've never seen a game do that.

    2) is situationally useful. Normally it will just be a "win harder" option, but if you are going up against a super boss then its better to have very super characters supported by everyone else, than to spread the stats around.

    3) is all round best option, having 2 reliable chars can open a lot more options for the game, plus you are not stuck if the game forces split party anytime.

This doesn't work in game theory because there is a reason why the loser is a loser to begin with.
It could be the skill, kit, stats, etc.
Giving them a good weapon won't change that.
Or in real games, if you are losing a territory, lane, army, or character, then you do not do things to build that up.
You either sacrifice it or use it as bait, in order for you to play around winners, which become your win con.

then you do not do things to build that up at the expense of building something else up*

Objectively, picking a loser to win is a losing strategy.

But it doesn't say that. It just says it makes them on par, with no indication that they will continually be on par.
If this is anything like real games then there is a reason why they are the weakest member.
Giving them the weapon do not change that.
Again, in game theory, this never works.
It is a far better solution to make your winners win harder.

In every game I play where this is an option, giving it to the strongest character is the best because it results in less moves to kill an enemy. If you have two middling guys have to take a turn to kill something vs one uber chad who one shots, the one shot is better. End game Tactics Ogre was like this with the lord class that could become an autobattle machine. You'd get as many white knights to buff his turn speed as much as possible and the rest of the team would just assist.

      Anonymous

But what if you are already one shotting enemies with him?

If he can one shot bosses then the game is GG at that point anyway. It's also an unrealistic hypothetical because what you do is you equip your best equipment on the best guy and then give hand-me-downs to the rest of the team.

The only time this is questionable is if there's limited exp that's split, like old Fire Emblem or Dungeon Siege 1. I don't play these types of games often though because I think it's a stupid system and everyone should have at least some baseline EXP. Like I was playing a Front Mission game and one of my guys didn't get a lot of exp because I left him to cover a flank instead of being the vanguard. I thought that was dumb.

It depends on the system, but in systems where using skills increases the skill then it is almost always better to repeatedly kill and res you.
In systems with experience, it depends on how much experience you get vs how easy it is to grind out mobs.

That's a fair point. Lets assume that it's more efficient than grinding mobs, but I can't be rez.

Is the level boost better than the additional attacks and more narrow distribution of enemy attacks? You'll be able to do more damage, but you'll also take more attacks.

    >whoa, I found the perfect weapon for Rolf! His build is set up to make this weapon really shine! He'll get +350 to his attack? Oh man that's great. Then again, I could give it to Leanne who would get +300 and actually be able to deal some physical damage...
    >Nah I think I'll give it to Mark, he gains +2 attack from it. He already has the best stuff anyway lol

I keep trying to give upgrades to weak units instead of strong ones in Fire Emblem and it's a sure-fire way to lose

      Anonymous

Have you tried EXP feeding them until they are strong units as well? Try to keep all your units at the same level. It's annoying to do but the results aren't bad.

Fire emblem is a lot like (old)pokemon in that respect. You could stomp the game with one character or you can bust your ass and make the whole party good... just because alright!

        Anonymous

        >Try to keep all your units at the same level
I suppose I haven't tried that but I did just feed weak units exp until they get to level 15+ and they tend to have 'one str/spd too low syndrome' whereas the good units overkill often and are incapable of leaving enemies alive for the weak units to feed off of.

fire emblem games are all easy as shit
you can perfectly beat any game by playing normal and feeding/leveling whatever units you want

Or what, do you think you need a guide to beat any of the games?

No guides, but trying to win without anyone losing, because everyone is either unique, or a weaker version of someone else, and they don't come back (except in Shadow Dragon)

Healers in fire emblem are the hardest to keep going. At least the dps can eventually get to a level where they can fend for themselves. Healers are suffering.

i mean, "i" clearly built average for the purpose of using the weapon.

Honestly a very good point. Let's say I had the idea of making a big strength-focused character wielding two-handed swords and for the entire playthrough I'm only finding small one handed swords.
And then I finally find a good two-hander after 20 hours of playtime. I wouldn't think twice about it and give it to that character right away.
At that point fulfilling the goal I set for my playthrough becomes way more important than having an optimized party.

The op question might be more digestible if you changed the weapon into a stat boosting item.

do you give it to the main character that will always be at the head of the party or another character, who actually uses that stat?

      Anonymous

well in that case you always just use it on the main character unless you have a damn good reason not to (e.g. it's a speed buff and your healer is really goddamn slow, or another character has a unique use for the stat like jeff in earthbound inventing stuff based on his IQ, etc.)

If each character can use the same weapons and it's 2's only chance to upgrade, then this must be the best item in the game and so also the final chance for 1 and 3 to upgrade.

2 is that strong with the second best item in the game, they'll be fine.

if his unique ability is garbage and not really interesting (or story/optional content related)

I think modern "item level" "rpgs" have fried a lot of peoples brains, but I greatly prefer horizontal progression options and if 3 has that then I'm taking it. Like, maybe he is still weaker than 2, but now he can do an AoE slash or some shit. The utility massively outweighs just another number boost.

Its context dependant on the game and mechanics. 2/3 of those members might be able to one shot a mook, so upgradingnthe weakest one to do the same might make grinding so much easier. Maybe the strongest has a stupidly powerful attack that shreds bosses, and you'd be foolish not to take advantage of that to one shot or make them eaiser.
Diminishing returns are a thing, at some point getting stronger than you are is pointless, meanwhile any boost to weaker member is a significant help to them. But does this matter if that weakest member is a healer or specialist who doesn't use blunt attack damage?
It all depends on the game.

Giving it to 3 sounds like it gives the party the greatest overall power increase.
Depending on how the weapon system works, giving it to 2 and then giving 2's weapon to 3 or 1 might also be viable, although it would also depend on the damage formula and how much of an increase they actually get from the new weapon.
Frick giving it to 1. Unless it makes 1 as strong as 2, I'd rather have 2 strong characters and 1 weak support than 1 strong character and 2 average ones.

-Get really strong sword that the whole party can all use
-Strongest guy on your team already has a really strong weapon, but that strong weapon they already have is character-specific to them
-You COULD give the Strongest guy an upgrade with the strong sword, but then he can't give his specific sword to any other party member.

In that case, I give the strong sword to the 2nd strongest attacker. "Weak characters" are weak for a reason, they're mages/healers

It depends on the gameplay and/or type of RPG. If we're talking turn-based strategy with a somewhat limited squad, e.g. Fire Emblem, then the weak character as it rounds out my contingent. If there is a single playable character and the rest are AI-controlled, I will take it as the protagonist and strongest character as I will make the best use of it. The case for the Average character would be determined by how interesting the unique usage is and how helpful a second strong character is to completing the game.
