The combat in this one just looks really boring. Turns take bloody forever. In Final Fantasy the battle is always keeping up the momentum so the concept of turn-based concept is never immersion breaking there, but here the combat very obviously looks out of place in the world. Why couldn't they have just made an action game? The PS1 graced us with Zero on MMX4 but I haven't seen a single PS1 game replicate that gamefeel in 3D
I love this game but what really messes up the combat is that you can bring up the item menu at any time in a fraction of a second and instantly use an item that heals you or gets rid of your risk, which makes the battles have no real risk at all lol
Also what the fuck were they thinking not putting in some kind of weapon quickswap
>Takes the bait
you are just a no-brain 5sec attention spam coomer, the combat is fast when you learn to combo over and over again before your enemy makes a move
>b-but I only make 1 hit damage with my attacks
when you keep the combo going your hit damage increases little by little with each attack failed or not.
that's what the risk system is about, the higher it goes the more damage you take AND MAKE
there are 2 or 3 combo abilities that let you do this making the game a lot faster than what it looks
the usual set up is 2 damage abilities to combo between them and 1 support ability depending on the situation (stun, poison, silence, HP recovery, DP recovery. PP recovery, etc)
>but what really messes up the combat is that you can bring up the item menu at any time in a fraction of a second and instantly use an item
that's actually one of the good things about the game, when enemies can one shot your whole HP at any time, having a fraction of a second to open the menu and react accordingly is very useful.
One example of this in one part of the undercity where the e-boi dolls and the face birds appear together sometimes
the fucking e-boi will silence you and the face bird will use his attack to deal massive damage to you, God forgive you if you entered the room with a high risk count because the bird will ONE PUNCH YOU to the next afterlife if you were not ready.
this one shot mechanic becomes noticeable after you exit the sanctum/catacombs (the easiest part of the game) when you start encountering stronger enemies, like the elementals or those obnoxious flying gargoyles that attacks you from afar.
and don't forget the final boss ultimate attack changes your view out of nowhere and if you don't hit him in the split of a second he CAN and WILL kill you right there if you are not prepared with magic ward. In that moment is when you say "thank God I could open the item menu in time to save myself"
Vagrant Story is pure KINO
this female bat character must be responsible invoking an incredibly big love for massive tits in me
No I think being a straight male did that to you
Retard alert!
morrigan did it for me, also vagrant story is great
Who doesnt love big milkers? :3
That was God
i thank him for granting me the joys of this passion
I also forgot one of my favorite exploits, when you use a defense chain ability that halves elemental damage they way it works is you take the whole damage then it heals you for half of what you took even if the damage would have killed you
So you just literally can't die to elemental attacks if your timing is good, and if your HP is low enough you'll wind up with more HP then before the attack, it's great
I barely touched the weapon crafting, just basic garden gnomeel setting. I still blew past the rest of the game.
this and Raging Ache pretty much carried me throughout the entire game.
If you're quick enough on the controls, you can abuse the shortcut menu to get three or four actions per one enemy action. It's like having permanent auto Haste, in a game that doesn't even have Haste.
>Why does Vagrant Story play like this when MMX4 exists?
Yeah Square was inspired by MMX4 when making this but halfway along development they accidentally the whole game
>graced us with Zero in X4
He feels like complete shit and sucks unless you abuse a glitch to do too much damage. They didn't "grace" us with anything other than shit.
What exactly feels shit? You jump up to a guy and hit him, it's awesome. The sabre combat is definitely more fleshed out in the MMZ games but X4 is still loads of fun
>You fell for the "not one person played it at launch but it's goated with the sauce" meme
Despite all the flaws, i replay this game yearly. It has good atmosphere and its feel hasn't been replicated. Combat is simple, but under the hood it quite complex. Weapons crafting is fun too.
Music is kino, sound design - genius, gets that catacomb feel, magic sounds like something out of this world.
Only big downside is menus are not ment for how often you need to open them to change gear.
I recommend stick with it at least until armor boss, its not that far
I didn't have issues with constant weapon swapping, but I was a dumbass who brute forced the entire game using the same 1H sword. Just spammed long combos and Break Arts. I didn't even know about Raging Ache or Phantom Pain until my third playthrough.

conversations playing in OP's head. who the fuck even talks that much about this game? you get far more people jerking to FF7-9, Xenogears and SMT these days
I love Vagrant Story and I don't give a shit what some retarded Ganker zoomer has to say about it
source?
I just adore this game, it's very pleasing that ashley controls the same in all situations even if it makes the same overly clunky. very consistent mechanics despite the learning curve
>being a german kid

>Vagrant Story was first place of the RPGs

the game was shit besides the artstyle.
>be American kid
>base my decision to buy games off of cover art and the publisher
>standing in Toys R Us debating between Vagrant Story and Legend of Mana for 20 minutes
>choose Vagrant Story
Very glad I did. One of my most memorable games of the Playstation gen and I still enjoy playing it to this day.
I read about it online before it was released and thought the weapon customization feature looked cool, and bought it basically solely for that reason
It's a shame you don't see any other characters in-game outside of cutscenes or as enemies.
What the fuck sort of JRPG is that then

Don't you get Magic Ward around the time Banish spells show up?
Watched a lets play on Youtube. Nice graphics but most of the game is loading into rooms in underground crypts that all look the same and only have two or three enemies per room. Looks boring. Also the character designs are queer.
- I hated the labyrinths in the snow forest and the iron maiden.
- The combat against most bosses feel slow and frustrating.
- Many puzzles(like the ones of the temple of kiltia) feel very annoying and difficult.
- Very few female enemies.
- No female fanservice in general.
- Every time the main character or a enemy uses a spell, it takes like 4 seconds to use it and usually evreything freezes during those 4 seconds(wich makes the combats slow and annoying).
It could have been a better videogame.
Turns out the actual game is average. People just jizz over screenshots and GIFs of how pretty the texture work looked
The game DOES look good though; I'm not sure if your point is that it doesn't play as well as… in the gifs?
