Maruki is dogshit, he's completely alien to the narrative he's awkwardly slammed into. Zoomers only like him because he's a dindu.

            >villain
He literally just does what the phantom thieves are too scared to do themselves. The world he’s trying to create is what the phantom thieves have been doing the entire game on a macro scale. Forcefully removing the free will of people to “save” them without their consent. Sounds like the games message is free will = evil but then Maruki is also made out to be wrong. Incompetent writers.

I love how much P5 makes morons still seethe 7 years later. Reminder that your favorite JRPG won't ever be acclaimed as Persona.

What does that have anything to do with what I said? You’re right my favorite game won’t be as acclaimed as persona 5 but I don’t care. Do I need the validation of game reviewers and mainstream normies who don’t understand proper game design? I don’t think so. Even in its own series persona 4 golden is objectively better in every category.

Both Shido and Yaldy are much better villains for P5 than Maruki. They actually play into the game's core themes and aren't a dumb gotcha added in after the fact.

Not Sephiroth that's for sure. That's the reason he's shit in the remake and other compilation garbage. He works best when he has little screen time.

Sephiroth is a perfect villain for FF7. He captures both internal conflict over Cloud's mind and the macro struggle for the planet all the while projecting a larger than life menace that gets unraveled as you unravel Cloud's lost mind until the perfectly satisfying final omnislash. In the original game, he is a great example of a well written villain. A well written villain is not a villain with a sappy backstory about how he just wants to save his kids, a well written villain is one that functions in the narrative. Conversely every version of Sephiroth after the original game is an example of terrible writing that can't understand why the original worked.

I really like this guy. If you read between the lines on the information you're given about him he's essentially seething about what your (other) player character did to him 3 games ago and will go through the hoops of turning his own crew into extremists who want to nuke cities to end war forever just so he can show up the humiliation he received. Also he has fun dialogue.
Not just a fun, relatively short-lived villain with entertaining dialogue, but a decent commentary on how terrible people do exist and that they can abuse people around them if they're in positions of power. And sometimes their main aim is simply ruination. I also like the player parallel he has going on.
