Why are arena shooters fricked right now?

>Quake sold out to Hero Shooters and still didn't get popular
>New unreal did for Fortnight
>Most indy AFPS are all superfluous Quake III clones
>Open Fortress constantly scaring off players with a new and unnecessary "convenient" launcher every few months
>Doom not even trying to have an Arena FPS mode
>Community full of either zoomers LARPing as arena shooter vets or old pros trying to relive old the eSports days
>morons trying to call shit like COD an arena shooter because they're butthurt about battle royal and want to be part of the cool old guard
I just wanna frag bros...

The genre ends up being to stomp-filled for mass popularity and too divided to keep players together.

They said that Linux users should just be "normal" and use windows (paraphrasing), so its clear they do not want me.
even though linux users have been around since ID released the linux version of DOOM2 and quake.

There are two breeds of shooter boomers
    1) played and loved arena fps like quake 3, ut99
    2) played slow, casual regenerating-shields dogshit like halo 1

They both consider themselves to be the origin of shooter fans and I shouldn't need to tell you which group is overwhelmingly larger than the other. Arena FPS isn't coming back, ever

i have never heard anyone consider halo 1 an arena shooter and if they have they are not using the term "arena shooter" in the same way as UT, Quake, etc. fans use it.

Reread the post anon, I didn't say or imply halo fans are arena shooter fans. That's group 1.

Halo players do for some reason. They think picking up guns from the map is all it takes to be an arena shooter.
Halo 1 came the closest. A lot of its maps are similar to small-scale Quake ones and the community has ported a bunch of Quake maps to that game.

    It`s really a fricking shame.
I`ll never forgive Epic for abandoning Unreal Tournament after the alpha i was really promising.
The only thing in recent memory that came close to delivering the good old days was Splitgate which was really fun for a while but they fricked it up with hordes of chinese cheaters.
why can`t we have nice things?

A lot of the advanced movement tech you would expect from an arena shooter is significantly harder with a gamepad.

lmao, quakebabies still seething that fricking console shooters of all things killed their niche genre while Half-Life and Counter-Strike were already massively more popular.

I think the problem with recent AFPS is there's nothing to do BUT play old competitive modes like duels or CTF. There's frick all party modes, and even those are generally just spawning with a random weapon or something stupid.
Not to mention that respawning FPS is on its way out in favor of battle royale shit.

one big reason why fast paced games with respawns don't exist anymore
the downtime of br & round based games is in fact the key
    >zoomers spend 90% of their time in the game in the menu opening cases and battle pass shit

  15. 1 year ago

people only want addictive battle pass games that dripfeed you gear and weapon upgrades nowadays
the only notable exception is fighters which are still around and reasonably popular but they stay afloat by selling character skins and shit as much as any other game
