Why are handhelds getting bigger?

the switch 2 is stated to have an 8 inch screen. and the claw 8 ai is supposed to have an 8 inch screen too. The Legion Go has an even bigger 8.8 inch screen.

Handhelds used to have tiny screens.I'm not complaining though, even 7 inches is a bit too small imo. It doesn't need to be 10-11 inches, but it needs to at least be 8 anything under 8 is just too small.

Though I'd say the switch is better mainly just because it is lighter, I've felt my brothers switch and it feels liek you are holding air.

70% of the space inside the Switch is taken up by the battery. Does that also apply to the Deck too?

Nobody knows what the Switch 2 will look like, but according to that firmware datamine leak, there's a small chance they might go back to dual screens. This could solve the issue with the case by combining the Wii U, DS, and Switch features. It would also explain why they might use an LCD screen again, to cut costs.

Nomad was a neat idea that was unfortunately ahead of its time, and in some ways the Turbo Express already did the same idea but more effectively due to the small Hu Cards. Sega kind of pitched the Nomad as the next-gen Game Gear but Genesis carts were way to bulky to take more than a couple on the go. And Sega never showed the back of the nomad in the adds because of that giant battery butt sticking out.

Ugly screen, horrible buttons and insanely bad battery life. I never used the TV feature anyways so I should have gotten a lite. It probably has way better battery life than the launch 2017 Switch LMAO

He was trying to burn it in by leaving a static image on on sdr, 600 nits. The switch oled lasted longer a lot longer before signs of burn in was found. Some say it is due to the lower brightness of the switch oled.

The biggest issue is leaving the steamdeck overnight to download games, you can't switch the screen off to download games it always has to be on and ui elements especially if you only play one game for hours on end. The 1500 hour test he did is equivelent to 1 hour every day using the steam deck oled for 2 years. It will burn in like a phone really. As in 2 years burn in is noticable on oled screens, I have an s20 fe wich had noticavle burn in by the 2 year mark and I can see the burn in right now.

The important part for Switch 2 is it's packing LPDDR5X RAM, and Nintendo is pretty good at RAM management on their consoles. That and it still has more RAM than a Series S.

        Anonymous

        >is it's packing LPDDR5X RAM
RAM speed is not more important than the amount. The Deck also has LPDDR5 and that leak got revised to remove that X, and even if it still was X, there is no meaningful improvement in that slight bit of RAM speed. It's like saying a slightly faster SSD is better for games. It isn't because the rest of the hardware cannot make use of how blazing fast a decent SSD already is.

The ram speed makes a difference in games, it is done for the memeory bandwith. These handhelds need as much meemory bandwith as possible as they are quite bandwith starved.

            Anonymous

VRAM makes a difference for games. For regular RAM there's barely even a quantifiable difference between DDR4 and DDR5, let alone any variations of DDR5.

              Anonymous

              >there's barely even a quantifiable difference between DDR4 and DDR5, let alone any variations of DDR5
To be fair you'll get about a 10fps boost from ddr5 over ddr4 if the rest of the hardware is really good and your fps is 100-300+. But that's obviously not going to be the case for the switch 2. There's barely any difference at a 60 fps cap, let alone 30. Getting faster ram over more ram is literally just wasted money for something like this and they clearly care about keeping the cost low when they're going 12gb and lcd so I can only imagine they just got a good deal on that specific bit of ram regardless of its speed.

                Anonymous

Faster ram is more noticable on apus, the performance increase is quite good. If you compare lpddr4 to lpddr5. The first switch was really bandwith limited in games, that is why they went all out now, to say that it makes no difference is gigacope

                Anonymous

Seriously just upping the ram speed on the normal switch makes games like totk playable at a locked 30 fps on a switch.

steam deck and rog ally games are pc games, they don't get games specifically made for them and as far as I'm aware that's the same with the series s, I can't think of a single exclusive they're all multiplat with pc. The difference is not textures, it's resolution.

My dad always complains about big phones and how they take so much space in his pocket. I guess they will keep getting bigger since people play on them and use them for media consumption.
