Making games for a living is a very depressing experience.
have you tried not being a retard
Are you looking for help with your condition?
*living is a very depressing experience.
fixed that for you
Have you ever tried to be a wagie? At least game development (given the fact that you work only on AA or you are indie) is a creative job.
People who make games have no friends and don't go outside, so you can't expect much from them. The best kinds of video games are made by people who know how to appreciate the world around them
The best kinds of video games are made by overworked Japanese office drones, and autistic lunatics.
more than half of all AAA schlock is made by people who have plenty of friends and drink, so why is most of those kind of games utter shit?
Not normalfags, just people with capacity for joy. People who are able to appreciate a beautiful sunset or a field of flowers. I'm mostly talking about something like Yoshi's Island or Katamari Damacy. Whimsical shit.
Autistic lunatics can go both ways but I agree somewhat
No good media has ever been created by a normie.
>Always thought Todd Howard was way too normal of a dude to write TES lore, esp Morrowind
>Learn that much of the cool lore and a lion's share of MW's aesthetic was made by using a screeching mentally ill Giga Autist as a muse and contributor
>Cyrodil being a bland fantasy forest instead of fucked up sprawling jungle like in lore was Todd aping LOTR
It all makes sense
>a lion's share of MW's aesthetic was made by using a screeching mentally ill Giga Autist as a muse and contributor
No. People misattribute it to him but most of it was written by others who also stole most of it from Runequest.
I'm referring to this quote
>[The look of the game] came from Michael Kirkbride, and I would say that it’s not just the visual aesthetic; all of the narrative aesthetic of Morrowind also comes from Michael. I might’ve been the narrative lead, but Michael was the luminary — the man with spectacularly exotic and bad judgment that excited us so much.
...
>And he is a rare talent in that he’s a very good illustrator, not just in terms of making it readable, but making it mythically vibrant. He did the original map of Morrowind, which was the foundation of the different terrains and geographical experiences. He was absolutely essential. And also crazy as a rat in a drainpipe, which is necessary. Somebody had to be really, really, really crazy, and it’s better that your lead designer isn’t.
-Ken Rolston
I probably misphrased since I didn't mean that he was the crux of the lore and look but like a muse for those things that other creatives filtered to make something unique and substantial
And then you read Runequest and find 95% of the lore is just ripped off.
Rolston incidentally did some RQ splats.
This applies to most creative mediums. People who don't do anything else struggle to actually come up with something worth saying.
More important than go outside is to have at least some cultural background that goes beyond some trendy writer or Holywood. That is already too much to ask for most authors/devs.
Humanity has been writing about the issues that make us human for millennia, there is no shortage of ways to expand the view on these things, but the devs are stuck in this little world of theirs where everyone is considered mentally ill and is on medication.
>People who make games have no friends and don't go outside
I mean, yeah, you can't labour hard making good games and also have a social life and family and shit. That's why the best games have always been made by autistic weirdo virgins.
Mainly because you know your job is not useful for society. Only a millenitard would find enjoyment wage slaving just to produce shitty AA games.
Indie dev spotted!
>Making games for a living is a very depressing experience.
Not for me.
My job was 3 weeks in office and 1 week on construction site. The office parts were horrible, with the only positive being the espresso machine and some hot female employees who were good for the eyes. The construction site part was a little less bad for the intellect, but it was extremely tiring.
I dropped everything to work on my amateur erotic games thanks to the power of the dollar in my country. I don't even need to be successful to live well here, and now my life is simple and pleasant. Never again have I had to get up early to get on a dilapitaded train full of people who look like the missing link between man and monkey like I did before. I'm happy.
>as a turdworlder who lives 3 miles away from literal shithuts, 50 dollars i get on patreon let me live like a king
good for you, but for people living in actual countries you have to be the best of the best to do indiedev for a living
Probably, but I'm sometimes skeptical about this so called impossibility of having a cheap life in first world countries. I have this impression that an American can move to a small town where land is cheaper and live a simple life where he cooks his own food using natural and cheap ingredients that are probably abundantly available (if even in my shithole there is, I imagine that in the US where production and logistics are advanced it must be much better). Plus the guy won't have to worry about malaria, drug cartels and women with ulterior motives thinking he is rich just because he has white skin, so he should have a lot more opportunities to adopt a less expensive lifestyle and still have security and quality of life, plus access to the internet which is the only thing a developer needs besides a computer.
I know many devs complain but they live in expensive metropolises and spend in one espresso at some famous franchise what I spend in 2 months grinding my own coffee.
Show me your ways, it takes me 2 hours in the train to go to the office...
Why did you stop using the Buzz Lightyear image, OP?
This gif has always been fucking gay. How would you know this to be the case unless you actually browse video game commentary channels, some of the worst material on YouTube? There are maybe two that don't make me wish I was deaf. (MM and Nerrel)
You have to be a massive fucking gay to watch most of them long enough to know their broader tastes.
>How would you know this to be the case
is this your first day on the internet
>they watch Nintendo youtubers and pretend that someone who hasn't is underageb&
What's a "Nintendo youtuber", I'm too busy editing Vaati'd vidyas for him to keep up with what you children watch.
Hide “yea” in a corner in the next video to prove its you.
Oh but you won’t cause you’re lying. gay
You're actually serious, aren't you? Holy fucking shit.
>This gif has always been fucking gay.
This gif was made in the past year or so, my newguy.
>(MM and Nerrel)
Literally who? I have six nephews and I have never heard of either of these men.
By using the word "always", I'm not implying that something has always existed. I know it's no that old.
"Always" suggests it's been like that for a long time. A year isn't a long fucking time at all, newfag.
I get accused more of being a newfag after a fucking decade on here than I did when I was actually new.
Maybe you should stop posting like a fucking newfag if it's been becoming increasingly worse over the past ten years for you, then?
only newfags care about shit like this and I don't listen to newfags
>only newfags care about shit like this
>I get accused more of being a newfag after a fucking decade
You've cared for over ten years, though?
“Always” can also mean something has been a certain way since its inception. Are you serious right now?
Common ESL mistake, but always in that context always means a long time.
The context you're thinking of is "has always" or "was always", which refers to the duration of existence.
>has always
Yeah that's what he said originally you fucking drooling retard.
Reading comprehension you need!
Oh no no no no.
Please response. I want to see your reply after getting BTFO
>not knowing /ourguy/ MatthewMatosis
newfag
me asf and proud, except not a ytfag and hate anime beyond normieshit like Cowboy Bebop
>this is me
>except it's not me at all
They're a reflection of you OP, pretty deep stuff.
Smash Bros has really buckbroken the Nintendo audience
Forced. Outside of maybe Smashgayry where the hate is understandable, most Ninties that weren't already weebs due to autism crossover became such after the proliferation of both social media and Nintendo's own increase in appeals to said market (Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, gachashit, etc.). I see coomers posting this more than I do examples of such.
t. tendie deflecting again
>Fire Emblem, Xenoblade
Ironic weebs fanbase who play with cringey eng dubs to compensate, they're still normalgays who hate anime
what the fuck is a nintendo youtuber and why would anyone want to watch that
Nintendo usually copyright strikes smaller youtubes who show their games, taking all the revenue for the video unless you follow their rules. So you'll usually find channels that either exclusively cover Nintendo games (and shill whatever latest product Nintendo has released) or they cover everything but Nintendo games.
you guys really don't see the irony in this huh?
Don't forget that they're "not a Metroid guy".
Me showing a retro game collector how to emulate
Wrong, the retro game collector would be pissed because they are physicalfags.
you can emulate physical and still get the best of both worlds 🙂
You really don’t understand retro game enthusiasts. They know they know emulation exists. They’re not normalfags though, they’re actual enthusiasts, so they’d prefer playing on original hardware
Retro game collectors don’t play games. They spend hundreds of dollars on old games just so they can put it on a shelf and look at it
this is true, I collect DVDs for the same reason, is to flex not to play, pretty much having it because is cool to have it
but I don't spend hundreds doing so, they are rather cheap in flea-markets and even Ebay when sold in packs
Emulatorfags don't play games. They spend hundreds of hours tinkering with emulator settings, romhacks, and shaders rather than playing the game. Why do you think all emulator screenshots are typically within the first hour of the game?
>Emulatorfags don't play games.
have a nice day, paypig
Damn, Sonic Frontiers for the Switch was shorter than I thought if this is still the intro
I finished more games via emulation than native versions
maybe you're too retarded to use an emulator, most games in most emulators require no tinkering, i think only citra and the ps2 emulator require some tinkering on some games, even then it takes 2 minutes to google the ideal settings and then use them. It's like console players complaining about pc requiring troubleshooting all the time despite that not being the case
NuCollectors do for their youtube vid back wall decorations. Anyone who actually cared got them when they were practically free or new releases.
You're full of shit too kid. I'm just a 30 year old boomer that thinks vidya hasn't improved in quality since the ps1 and n64 era. I emulate, play on original hardware, and play rom hacks on an old CRT I've owned for decades and an everdrive.
I don't know why everyone thinks we're just obese YouTubers that do nothing but buy old Vidya and let it sit to rot. Fucking hate this retarded Fortnite generation, all you gays do is see the world through a YouTube and reddit post lens.
this is kind of true. my ex was a collector and he would buy every game twice. one for the shelf and one for playing. he didnt play a lot because he said it was too exhausting.
you spend your kids college fund to buy plastics, I enjoy all that for free with just few clicks and 4k 200fps with CRT Royale.
I live off NEETbux, so technically, I spend YOUR college funds to buy plastic. Get to work, wagie.
So I am indirectly furthering your suicide, nice.
No u
FAT TITS HAiry pusy AWOOPOGA
The items I collect with my spare spending money will be worth three times as much in 20 years. What investments do you make?
lmao fuckin wolf of sesame street over here with his pokemon cards worth millions
She's so fucking flat haha
???
Literally not, at all
good for you, i enjoy my retro games in their original resolutions as god intended
Why is this zoomer bragging about being retarded and playing retro games in an uglier way than the original graphics on a CRT?
This thread sucks but I wanna fill tatsumaki with so much sperm it curdles like a thick porridge and drips out of her stupid little pussy in globs while she heaves and sighs from the rough sweaty fucking we just did.
Then I pick her up and take her again from the front with no resistance.
I'm so horny anons. So very horny please help me.
good taste I want to fuck her so bad too
True 'channer right there.
If you think oldfags with a big collection spent millions, you are an absolute underage and know nothing of what you speak.
retro game collector here, I thought it was funny, lmao at the other anons going ACKSCHEWALLY on an obvious joke
me showing PC players a 50 inch TV
You bros don't connect your PC to the big screen for gaming?
Why would I want a 50 inch TV for a 3 foot viewing distance? That would introduce tons of pointless input lag and lower graphical fidelity and make it more difficult to see my screen.
boob
no thanks, thats stupid
>me showing a console user an hdmi port on a gpu
>me showing a console user 4 hdmi ports on a gpu
me showing my 100 inch ram rod up your wife's ass
You just don't get it.
waste of money
I used to be one of those physicalfag collectors despite emulating since ye olden tymes of Nesticle.
Then Hurricane Harvey destroyed all my shit. Taught me an expensive lesson.
to not build houses out of cardboard?
Harvey dumped a fuck load of water by being a slow moving storm. Look at before and after pics of places in the Texas Gulf coast.
Not much you can do about the very ocean coming to say hi.
>be me
>decide to live in God's toilet bowl that gets shit on yearly

>mfw
NTA but usually when God decides to piss on the rim he doesn't spend 3 days doing it causing it to flood like 30+ miles inland.
Retro games are about playing on original hardware. Flash carts are fine if they are accurate which they usually are.
When you connect a nice CRT to an old console its like fucking magic. Emulation can't replicate that feel.
>Retro games are about playing on original hardware.
The vast majority of what are known as "retro games" are ports of arcade games, you were never playing on original hardware. You can stop larping as someone born the 80s, now. You don't want to be in your 30s right now, trust me.
>The vast majority of what are known as "retro games"
Nah, not really.
Some "arcade ports" are better on consoles too. Contra arcade is mediocre. Many such cases.
>no they're not and even if they are they're better as ports anyway
Too early in the day to be dealing with coping children, don't you still have class or something today?
You literally don't know what you're talking about. The majority of retro games are not arcade ports. Where's the arcade Zelda, or Sonic, or Doom, or Worms, or Final Fantasy? Literally not a thing.
And when you are dealing with arcade ports or adaptations, there's a reasonable chance the console version is better, because it came later. Pocky and Rocky is a more sophisticated game than Kiki Kaikai, to name another example.
I'd like to take a drink from her milk cans if you know what I mean
Holy fuck you have aids.
>When you connect a nice CRT to an old console its like fucking magic. Emulation can't replicate that feel.
a pitiful 14 inch meme TV for "original hardware" setup... lol...
i have multiple tube televisions including those meme video monitors. the small ones are perfect to sell for suckers like you.
bro nothing beats playing mario rpg on my phone during long flights
My go-to is Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday for Sega Genesis.
I'll give it a go, thanks for the recommendation
>alright bro but now I don't OWN it
>I don't got no street cred for having this rom on my drives
>I can't resell this to some other desperate ass collector bro for 20x the price it launched at
>this ain't even the right type of screen to appreciate what CRT does to them pixels
>this ain't even the right type of screen to appreciate what CRT does to them pixels
This is true tho
This.
Where are your other consoles? You really ONLY play on a Dreamcast? No fucking way
nice chud hive, wheres the bong
you understand it looks better at the actual size you would see it in a game?
which is the size of the thumbnail, where it looks better
crt's don't look better, they are just lower resolution

>look guys I can emulate this game wrong!
Just look at some of the emulation related Digitalfoundry videos where they as splitting hair over the tiniest inconsistencies.
It's not the same

Idk how I fucked up that badly
general system that benefits what appeals to the lowest common denominator, remember that indie merchants are stil merchants
"depression" is an excuse not to take responsibility for your own thoughts
the hell does it even mean
"I can't control the fact that I constantly think about shit that makes me miserable an unmotivated"
spoiler: you can, people just blame it on their "depression" disease instead
its less about thinking and more about being in contexts that put them in that state
these people will stay on twitter 24/7 talking about how much of a perfect human being they are then go to sleep and wonder why do they feel like shit
That's not how depression works though.
>being on a shitty context with shitty people doesnt make you demotivated
sure. all you need is cut your cock off and the depression goes alway right
>mentions trannies unprompted
i thought the npc theory was just a meme
Keep convincing yourself of that
>no you don't understand dr shekelberg told me my brain doesn't make the good chemicals
if you think depression is real you should have a nice day sooner rather than later
Depression isn't actually about being depressed. It's a weird misnomer that has made tons of fucking retards who think they are depressed because they are sad most of the time.
Depression is quite literally just the void of emotion. You don't feel anything for anything.
But not feeling anything sounds pretty chill, what is the disease if it doesn't hurt?
>you WILL feel nothing and you will be happy
This unironically. Imagine being an ape who lets your brain control you lmao
Self control is a lie.
Ego is an illusion.
We are powerless before the hidden masters within and without.
The puppet that does not see its strings will perform the best.
The puppet that does will know inner peace and harmony without harmony.
based
Nothing wrong with any of that. Lazy millennials and zoomers deserve poverty
He himself actually has never worked a hard day in his entire life. You can make some kind of declaration to your workers who actually slave away at their dogshit jobs, but Mike Rowe literally went directly into one of the cushiest industries imaginable after never having worked a dogshit job between getting his degree which was paid for by his two educator parents.
Good. You can't expect a stage hand to direct a film, or a footsoldier to command an army.
>goyslop pledge
What a dumbass.
>Implying he's blue collar
dude, just get born into a stable middle class white family with 2 teachers for parents, go to community college, choose literally the easiest degree they offer, then get spotted for being born w/a voice fit for TV and start your own cable show. It's just that easy.
Worked for me.
Willingly taking part in crunch at your job to impress your higher ups is more pathetic than anything else on the list
there is no bad job, what is bad is having to work.
I would go down that list and write why almost every single one of those statements is fundamentally wrong in one or more ways but that would be pointless since anyone with more than 80 iq can already tell, and those that can't or that refuse to wouldn't anyhow.
The older I get the more this looks like slave brainwashing.
because it is, staged as postironic humor
>HAHA IT'S HILARIOUS BECAUSE IT'S LIKE SOME SORT OF CANON OF WORKING... IT'S PLAYING WITH FORM WHILE SAYING... Y'KNOW... IT DOES MAKE SOME PRETTY GOOD POINTS... HMMMMMMM
baby boomers would at least get something for their slavery, zoomers were born in a pool of shit, will never buy their own flat and have shit prospects for basically everything
Shit, i'm an elder millennial and i've given up hope on owning property. I own an old car that's used and falling apart. Least it runs I guess.
Doesn't it just make you want to take a hammer to his stupid gay boomer face
5 is actually good advice but he should be tarred and feathered for everything else
Not really.
Consumer debt is bad.
Taking on debt to invest it later can be beneficial.
The problem is that for most people there aren't many proper investment opportunities that would require taking on debt like a factory would buy a new machine. But this "debt = bad" brainwashing is just another sign that this pledge was made for literal retards.
For me, it's the scare quotes around "compliance."
Why? It's about workplace safety and how being within compliance of safety standards doesn't guarantee safety.
Now that's one well bred piece of cattle
You can tell his buck was broken
He's a lifelong actor that's never had to actually work a blue-collar job that wasn't on camera. He now gets paid by millionaires to produce anti-union propaganda
I agree with 1, 2, 5, 6, 9 and 11.
You have to admire how they put some good stuff in there to make it more believable. For instance point 11 is fine, and then you have slave shit like 7.
>1. I have won the greatest lottery of all time. I live in America
>10. I believe that I am a product of my choices - not my circumstances
>"cancer" is an excuse not to take responsibility for your own cell division
You can't control your own thoughts though. So you cannot take responsibility for thoughts that aren't yours to begin with.
Some thoughts can’t be controlled, but it can be harmful to say that without including the context that any thought can be intentionally overridden or disregarded given enough time, practice, or external aid. Even if you are not responsible for your thoughts, you benefit from being responsible for how you respond to them.
>Some thoughts can’t be controlled
No, no thought can be controlled. Because consciousness does not generate thought. Consciousness reads and interprets thoughts.
>Even if you are not responsible for your thoughts, you benefit from being responsible for how you respond to them.
This is true, but depends entirely upon a person's access to regulatory methods like meditation. If someone never learns about meditation, they cannot benefit from it. Especially not if they are a person predisposed to being stubborn.
No, this is an idea perpetuated by monks who can enter deep states of meditation and doing so recognize that their thoughts are not generated by their will, and only by entering a certain state do thoughts stop.
I just controlled the thought that made me write this sentence, bitch
get good
that's an illusion bud
this is an idea perpetuated by people who want to sell you antidepressants
>you can't control your own thoughts
Are you an actual infant? Yes you can. Learn some basic meditation skill and quite being such a doomer gay
If you actually practiced meditation you would know that you don't control those thoughts. There's a reason why you touch the thoughts and let them go. The thoughts come on their own. You do not control them.
>but i'm controlling them by meditating
No, your body is being basically put to sleep.
How about concentration

Not forgettable enough to stop bitching about apparently.
I'll give you two. Depression Quest. That Dragon, Cancer.

Of course the only thing they can think of is "i'm le depressed because my dad didnt want to buy another mustang for me"
>me showing payfags that indie games are the only ones worth pirating
depression is not a emotion, you retard
it's just the natural state of men under gnomish overlords
>no indie dev game about having a stable/happy life but inevitably having the human craving of chaos, and either the struggle or acceptance of the various chaotic vices that you try to blend into your life
fucking unoriginal gays
isn't that Hotline Miami?
Like
said, that's basically Hotline Miami.
they were told in school that stories are metaphors for personal struggle
Me posting my passion project indie game on Ganker and being called a moron and told to go back to r*ddit.
sounds better than posting it and everyone going "WOW THIS IS PERFECT!!! RELEASE IT RIGHT NOW!! YOU ARE VALID!!" and the game looks like this
that looks SOUL af what are you talking about?
fuck, i forgot about this. what was it called again?
young redditor, you should know the opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference
I wonder how badly this poor dog was beaten.
Fuck off, serb. Souls clones aren't passion projects
stay dry pupper
I know that feel bro
What game?
"B-But depression is like, deep, and stuff!" cries the indie developer. "You wouldn't understand!"
why are (You) so unoriginal making this thread every day? why not go play one of the many indie games that’s about GAMEPLAY and not muh emotions
what is the itch that you wish the indie market would scratch?
for me I just want a game that plays like the PS2 Era Battlefront and that one Lord of The Rings game, also Mike Tyson Punchout like combat fleshed out
I SIGHED AS THE ELEVATOR BEGAN TO SHAKE, VIBRATING WITH MOTION.
Please tell me that's not an actual line
>he is unfamiliar with yiik
YIIK (Pronounced Why-two-kay) is my favorite Yiiklike
wait really? I thought it was like ick but with a y
Please stop mispronouncing YIIK as "yick", it hurts the dev's feelings to have his game be calling yicky. Makes him think of "icky hicks" because... they all use the letters i c and k I guess?
maybe he should have made the title y2(II)k
Can I pronounce it like "yikes" instead?
Reading anons post, I felt a twinge of embarrassment roll down my spine, like a bedeviled egg forced to face judgement as it ascended toward the heavens. "Yick". The word echoed in my head, like the incessant beating of a Newton's cradle, perpetual in its motions. With such a lack of culture, in this void of knowledge, no game could ever truly be considered art.
Personally, I always read it as 'yeek'.
It do really be like that.
give me ten examples
https://arch.b4k.co/v/search/image/Tb02_qZ-P7ikzOCVITRYuA/
Would've made more sense to say something along the lines of "quirky Earthbound inspired RPGs" or "survival horror games that are secretly about mental illness".
>"survival horror games that are secretly about mental illness"
name 3 that aren't Silent Hill
Amnesia: The Dark Decent
Dementium: The Ward
The Suffering
Name 6 more
Why should I?
I don't even play horror games, those were three off the top of my head just from thinking of horror games I know of that specifically include mental illness in their titles. For all I know, every horror game could be about mental illness.
>horror about mental illness
full soi
>horror about man made evil and science gone wrong
moderate soi
>horror about witches and the devil
based
Silent Hill isn't about mental illness, it's about a cult. Silent Hill has mental illness as a narrative device.
Silent Hill 2 is
what mental illness is Silent Hill 2 about
depression
I think it's more about guilt, resentment and remorse. Never really saw James as depressed.

what's the next thread gonna be, crying about indie games in general?
Super Meat Boy was indie, right? That was good. As was Cortex Command and Osmos.
there are hundreds of indie games that are not about depression. even cup head is considered and indie title along with among us. 16 year olds on Ganker do not know what they are talking about.

whats the joke?

No OP, it's not. It's just the already lame buzzword "goyslop" but with indie swapped in.
>everyone who uses "indieslop" is me

Not that anon, but jokes should be funny, dipshit
You don't get a participation trophy just for opening your mouth
Ganker makes fun of people with depression but spends 18 hours a day masturbating. pot calling the kettle black if you ask me.
I only masturbate for 10 hours a day retard
having depression and whining about it is way worse than taking it on the chin
what exactly do you take on the chin? most likely a dick because you are a gay.
anything life throws at me. Also depressed whiner shouldn't talk about being gay, lmao
enjoy the rest of highschool
my depression is better than their depression
umm actually sweaty I only masturbate 2 hours a day
Ganker is making fun of indie games about depression not people with depression though.
How many of these games even exist? I feel like it's just some twitter meme that people parrot.
>"indie game about depression" fags when you ask them to list indie games about depression
why do you want the list?
Because if "indie games about depression" are such a widespread issue surely you have a list ready rather than just make blanket statements about nothing in particular
Surely you have a list of all the times you didnt have sex fucking gay
>sealioning this hard
Unironically drink a gallon of bleach
I think these memes (16 bit games about depression/quirky earthbound inspired rpg, with any overlap they may have) only exists because of omori and celeste, which came out fairly recently and are very popular. That said, if you browse the steam reccomender you'd be surprised of how many unknown earthbound-inspired indie rpgs exist. Don't really know about the depression part.
Neither of those games are even really about depression, though. Celeste is about anxiety attacks or transgenderism or whatever the fuck, and Omori's about guilt.
yeah of course, the depression part is the overgeneralization common in every prejudice
Omori
Undertale

There's tons of these games.

>Undertale
Not really "about" anything aside from maybe pacifism.
>Yume Nikki
Not about anything either.
>YIIkes
Not about depression.
>Doki Doki Lit Club
I guess you could claim this one to be "about depression" in the sense of "AI realizes it isn't real and gets unhappy", but that's about it.

I think Trigger Warning are fucking retarded too, anon, but come on now.
>It's not, Undertale is basically a commentary on the conflict between player agency vs. developer intent in video games as well as immersion.
On a meta level, yeah, but on a more in-universe level the question is ultimately about the responsibility someone with the kind of abilities a player would have might take on merely by having those abilities at all. Flowey abuses the fuck out of that power because he's a sociopath, and the player/player character is chastised for doing the same.
Either way it's still not about depression.
Undertale's in-universe actual plot is just an excuse to tell the meta plot
>this means it's ABOUT those things, guys!!!!
yes, among other things. How the fuck can anybody deny this
The thing about Omori is that the content warning is kind of a bait and switch
You THINK that the person that died in the game suffered from anxiety and depression and killed themselves, but you later find out that she was mostly fine, and actually died from accidentally being killed by the main character which re-contextualizes his own depression and veers into being a game about dealing with massive guilt instead
So you see the content warning and go "oh okay it's obvious what's going to happen/has happened" then you get hit with what actually happened
not saying omori is a flawless game but it was definitely more impactful than a lot of generic indie depression simulators
>yume nikki
>not about depression

Of these only Doki Doki could really be construed to be about depression.
Only Doki Doki Literature Club kinda fits
Everything else isn’t about depression. I mean Undertale? Really? The game that ends with the generic “friendship conquers all” ending??

I blame OP for being a fag. Plenty of non depressing indie games out there. Go play some Dead Cells, some Stardew Valley, some Factorio. You are attracted to depressing games perhaps.
How many games do you know that are about depression? I can only think about depression quest and omori
Yes why can't they be rich fonts of originality like current AAA games?
Me making the same thread for the 100th time today
You're looking for the popular indies. The stuff that tries to have a moral for illiterates who can only get a story though a game. Just get some stupid shit from some dank corner and roll with it.

You're not even trying to have an argument and as such I won't even bother replying.

There are all sorts of indie games, and the ones you know reflect your taste, which means you are unoriginal.

Play different games? Steam has 10000 games each year, maybe a few of them are about depression.
My own game’s plot is a deliberate allegory for my own struggles with mental health, since part of the reason I started to work on the game in the first place was to give me something to do when I was in the midst of a complete mental breakdown, but it’s deliberatey written so the allegory isn’t really obvious unless you know how my own personal struggles relate to the game plot. Plus, it’s a gameplay focused game anyway, so alot of the plot isn’t forced on you.
It’s good writing advice to write what you know. In fact, I think a reason that a lot of games about depression don’t work is because the dev has never been depressed in their lives.
>Doesn't understand
The entire point of this thread is to call out indy devs claiming to have depression when in reality they're just tired from having to actually work for the first time in their lives. Developing your own video game isn't a fucking sign of depression.
>The entire point of this thread is to

Holy fuck, I made my own Geocities website by html code when I was literally 11 years old just because I was curious and looked up how. This new "common core" education has done nothing but emotionally and mentally stunt your entire generation and you're actually too stupid by design to understand. Same shit happened to kids who lived in the 1950s when they tried to do away with the concept of childhood entirely; You were just a "little person" who should be ashamed that you're not an adult yet and were treated as such. It was so Orwellian that so much as being male with hair longer than two inches made you some anarchist outcast of society.

Yes. The education system has been shit since the last millennium, arguably it's better now than it was. Zoomers are just all brainrotten and don't even know how to navigate their file folders or save things as different file types. It is that bad
Depression and most other mental illnesses are pharmaceutical company conspiracies to get people hooked on expensive drugs.

What
So, what Indies are you playing, chaps?
I'm playing Sonic Adventure if he a good game.
What would a indie game about slight annoyance be like?
terraria
Look, when I go into a resteraunt, I'm not looking for a chef to reinvent a burger or make a completely new "Meat that's cooked with Hispanices" dish.
I want it done fucking WELL. Same with Indy games, I don't give a fuck about "well you need to reinvent the wheel here dude", I'm coming to you for you to make a great fucking wheel.
I'm all for indy games because they're not dicking around trying to be Mr. Clever dick and figure out a new secret design that nobody's ever thought of before, I buy indie games because they have PASSION for those kinds of games and will generally make types of games that AAA devs have tossed to the wayside because they can't be infinitely monetized with microtransactions and other bullshit.
Because they are all from the same clique and most of them are mentally unstable leftists active in what's probably the most demand-driven (i.e. capitalist) economy possible (high-tech entertainment = no fun no buy).
Their problem with "gamer culture" is not that it's "toxic" but that people actually have very specific requirements about the products they get.
It isn't just some corner coffee shop where people will pick up stuff on their way to work. You actually have to lean heavily into marketing and make something that people actually go out of their way to purchase.
This is something a lot of them simply can't stomach. Especially the ones that sunk years into a hobby project just to realize they have to finish up something marketable.
Most of these bros don't even have an accountant.
>.t independent developer
Sounds like you make shit games.
did you get molested by an indie game with themes of depression? there are like a million indie games. if it weren't for old games and the occasional indie I don't even think I would play games anymore, I can't comprehend why some people get triggered by their very existence
anon, OP is just mad because nu indies are all forcibly artsy about current issues.
tldr op is being a gay
>nu indies are all forcibly artsy about current issues.
I can't even think of any genuinely recent ones aside from pseudo-VN shit like that one about indian immigrants.
See
See
Oh wow, like six games.
Now go and search some buzzword like "metroidvania" or "boomer shooter" on Steam. and see how many results you get.
Which of those are about current issues you dumb gay?
That's because people who say this shit don't play games, and barely have an interest in games. They're addicted to heckling things on Ganker. You're talking to people whose conception of what an indie game is comes from memes about Phil Fish.
Most indie games are "game I played as a kid, but new" or "survival game made in unity", or in some cases "furry passion project", and the really good ones like Hollow Knight or Cuphead get some attention, while most slip by the wayside.
>Most indie games are "game I played as a kid, but new" or "survival game made in unity", or in some cases "furry passion project",
Don't forget "french/finnish autism project". Those are important too.
I did.
But, I like sad games
Personal journey stories that revolve around emotions like depression are easier and safer to write cause it's something that's universally relatable and already has set path the story will follow (depression -> overcoming depression).
Everyone can agree that depression = bad. Once you step outside of that safe zone all you can really write about are societal issues which are political and involve you needing to make a statement about society. Making that statement involves you setting up the premise, introducing the issue to the audience, making it relatable to people who may not be familiar with it and finally making a statement which not all the audience will agree with and also involves you actually needing to understand what is it you're trying to say because a political statement can be picked about more easily.
Why not write a nice story, about a man who lost his ham sandwich?
Because by making it about ham, you've already alienated Muslim players because they aren't allowed to eat pork. You're already excluding players from what's otherwise a hecking relatable story-driven indie title.
Good. Goat shaggers back to the desert, I say.
These games don't even properly delve into depression. Like you said most of them are just about "depression = bad." They don't delve into less comfortable territory about the nature of depression, what it drives people to do and whether people are responsible for doing those things or not, the less comfortable ways people learn to cope with depression, how society's view of depression can affect people, or even less comfortable aspects like asking if depression can be a force for good ultimately and the ramifications of accepting that if it's true.
Instead they're all just about one guy being depressed and then overcoming it. Rather than actually examining depression as a topic as something trying to be "artsy" should.
Getting that balls deep requires a real tight focused cast and narrative. 'Games' don't have time to do that because it's a fucking game.
They probably come off as half baked because that's just how the medium is.
Gameplay will only obfuscate and interrupt your narrative. Clear lines for 'pay attention im trying to tell you something deep' and 'lol get me the potion to open the door'
If im writing a story that really wants to examine character it would probably best to make a VN or CRPG.
Interactivity can absolutely be an aspect of this and many good narrative games make your choices matter somewhat, and the best can integrate its themes into your decisions.
But lets be honest that's not the cast most of the time. Even something hailed for it's storytelling like Red Dead 2 has Arthur behave like a psychomaniac during gameplay. Heckin dissonance is a meme if course, but it does take you out of the experience and if you take the story seriously you HAVE to divorce the gameplay from the narrative
VNs don't have that problem most of the time but too bad they're often just stupid writing with meme characters
If you want something raw, best stick to film and books I guess
>Gameplay will only obfuscate and interrupt your narrative
It's harder to use gameplay for the narrative but that is not at all the case that it will interrupt or obfuscate it.
If you really want to tell a specific narrative you design the gameplay around it and use it to recreate the emotions of the characters in the player.
The issue is most games botch it because they don't know what they are designing for.
Ghost of Tsushima got close in regards to its treatment of honor in the narrative.
It created player expectations to go into the game playing as an honorable samurai and built the tools needed to facilitate a downfall to 'dishonorable' tactics.
But they failed to realize players would follow the main character's progression and try to ignore those tools to stay honorable while they could
The reason I give it as an example is that for me who played on lethal I felt the same progression the main character felt when he realized he wasn't strong enough to just fight honorably and needed other things as the difficulty mode kept me dying when I tried to play honorably and ended up resorting to the ghost tools.
I had an experience where the gameplay directly reinforced the narrative themes more strongly than the story could.
It was something that could have worked in theory for all players but instead, they relied on standard game traditions and missed the crucial point of turning players from wanna-be samurais to reluctant ninjas.
Of course, this particular topic isn't deep but it exemplifies that is very much is possible to not have the gameplay conflict with the core story and instead contribute to it in a way other mediums couldn't that can allow for deep exploration.
what are some VN and CRPG examples that you know?
I'm always looking forward to checking out games that go that mile
please feel free to name the games you're talking about 🙂
Are you asking for a game that does properly delve into the topic or one that doesn't?

There are barely any indie games actually about depression. This is a meme
me telling alchemists that the emerald tablet is simply an allegory for the development of the soul
Every time this thread gets posted people either list a handful of examples that aren’t actually about depression at all or can’t list any examples of indie games about depression in the first place and will just keep pretending that it’s a trend
Depression Quest. Literally one game, that no one likes in the first place.
Celeste is about anxiety, not depression.
It's funny, because among all of OP's bitching and whinging I haven't seen him name one of the few games I've seen that could actually be a hacky depression metaphor. Damn shame, too, because the first one had a really interesting postgame with the way it encouraged you to fuck around out of bounds.
This thread keeps getting reposted yet no one can actually name any games that are about depression
it's because they don't play games. they are just addicted to anger.
Millenials and zoomers are just obsessed with depression and never talk about anything else
can you name any games about depression
This. Made up/self diagnosed mental health issues and/or gender identity shit is the closest thing millenials and zoomers have to a personality. I'm scared that they're old enough to vote.
>still can't name any games about depression or gender identity

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
That game's just a reskin of a /mlp/ game called "Super Lesbian Horse RPG", anon. It's not about "gender identity", it's a game about yurifag furries made for fapbait that would have been a horsefucker fangame if not for the fact they'd get sued.
The main character is literally a trans lesbian. Sneed.
>anon struggles to understand the concept of fapbait
>The main character is literally a trans lesbian
Probably because the main character is the reskin of the yellow horse, and it was a meme on /mlp/ for a long while that she was a futa.
Don't yuricucks typically get really butthurt about that kind of shit?
/mlp/ and that fanbase in general were an unreal amount of cancer, anon. There's a reason they're one of two fanbases on the history of the site to get completely 100% permabanned from everywhere other than containment boards.
Anon, if I make a horror game where some dude kills himself to avoid becoming a zombie and I put a content warning at the start about that, that doesn't mean the game is about suicide.
To be fair, nowadays everything needs to have a content warning even for the most mundane shit. Shows and movies on netflix have content warnings for smoking of all fucking things. People are too afraid of anything slightly outside their comfort zone
I know, that's my point. Just because OMORI has depictions of or themes relating to depression doesn't mean the game is about depression. Likewise, just because Undertale has a joke about a guy who really fucking hates his job (
) doesn't mean Undertale is about depression or the abuse of fast food workers or some shit like that either. Sometimes a joke about a guy hating his job is just a joke about a guy hating his job.
>Sometimes a joke about a guy hating his job is just a joke about a guy hating his job.
The people who believe Toby was trying to be deep and not just making a joke satirizing the wagey hell are the same people who think Freddy Got Fingered is a surrealist masterpiece that is misunderstood.
Intentional or not, Freddy got Fingered is basically some dork with too much money taking the blueprint of one of those 90's Hollywood romantic comedies, and wiping his ass with it, and that's hilarious.
The modern equivalent would be if someone like Sam Hyde blagged some studio out of a load of money to make his own Marvel movie equivalent, and it was just scene after scene of nonsense, all with a vague sense of aggressive hostility toward the audience. It's conceptually hilarious.
why am I not surprised a bnhatard is up to date on /mlp/ garbage
I don't even know what bnha is, I just have that saved because it's a good .gif
It's like the world has just gone from bad to worse over the past 20 years, and everyone is mentally ill now.
Celeste, Omori, Undertale
>celeste
About Anxiety disorders, not depression
>Omori
About Guilt specifically relating to manslaughter not depression
>Undertale
Really doesn't tackle any form of mental issue in the slightest, is mostly about the responsibility that an immortal time traveling being would take on by merely existing
>is mostly about the responsibility that an immortal time traveling being would take on by merely existing
It's not, Undertale is basically a commentary on the conflict between player agency vs. developer intent in video games as well as immersion. Deltarune is kind of dealing with the same thing but it hasn't evolved yet; do you let yourself be taken in by the fun story Ralsei wants to tell you, or do you fight against the story?
>player agency vs. developer intent
It's more about dissecting the inherent morality of the mentality of a videogame player. Frankly I always thought the themes of Undertale were pretty pretentious when held up to scrutiny, or at least were given too much weight by the fanbase as if "you kill in videogame" is meant to be some profound ontological statement that applies to real life. It really works better when you just take it as a one off experiment about what would happen if player actions had moral ripercussions.
>Frankly I always thought the themes of Undertale were pretty pretentious when held up to scrutiny, or at least were given too much weight by the fanbase as if "you kill in videogame" is meant to be some profound ontological statement that applies to real life
To be fair, Toby seems to have realized this, because if you go back to talk to the goat kid after getting the pacifist ending you basically get a lecture that can be summed up as "most of this probably doesn't apply to real life retard".
"Morality" has nothing to do with the story, the developer knows all these characters are fake there is no true value to their lives. If you embrace that and don't let yourself get invested then you're on the Genocide route and you become "soulless" because your heart isn't in the game. If you're on the Pacifist route then you surrender your player agency to the actual story that they want to tell to you, and thus your player character is given a name independent of (You)
Nice, that's an interesting way to look into it. Good to use this retarded bait thread for some actual discussion.
>kill monsters that attack you first, and you're a bad person
Yeah, I don't really care for that as a narrative. It's dumb.
Anxiety and guilt are linked to feelings of depression, yes. They can be both symptoms and root causes you literally cannot separate these aspects when talking about depression.
>is mostly about the responsibility that an immortal time traveling being would take on by merely existing
Yes, most fictional stories will never flat out state what it's about. That's a gradeschool level skill most people should learn when interpreting stories for meaning. That's like saying Moby Dick was just about somebody really angry at a whale. When bits of the same message keep getting repeated over and over in different ways in the story you should pick up on what the author is trying to say.
>Anxiety and guilt are linked to feelings of depression, yes. They can be both symptoms and root causes you literally cannot separate these aspects when talking about depression.
>anon is unaware of the existences of anxiety disorders
you've made no point, explain.
>almost all popular discussion about Omori revolves around depression
>the creator said literally said Omori was based on their original webcomic they used to deal with they're mental health issues including depression
>Just because OMORI has depictions of or themes relating to depression doesn't mean the game is about depression
It literally means exactly that. When there's a major element and theme that keeps running throughout the story. No long form story has just one central theme.
what is moby dick about?
wasn't part of the curriculum because third world country
>despite being a gay transgender zoomer it's still you ;DDDD
>having been thoroughly BTFO, OP now resorts to posting random screenshots and adding buzzwords picked out of a hat
I don't think anyone's saying that there are NO games about depression, just that of the sheer volume of indie games, it seems kind of obsessive and arbitrary to harp on the handful that are about mental illness. in any other case, I feel like the specific game or games would be made fun of, not the highly broad industry category to which they belong
>Iv played exactly 2 indie games
You know Ganker at least used to pretend to play game
Indie game developers are no different than AAA developers, something works and they all just copy it.
Alright, what would the underlying theme be in YOUR hit indie game, Ganker?
The power of friendship, while gay and overdone, is an important thing because being lonely sucks ass and finding a sense of community and belonging is just a natural thing that we need and want.
I've been drawing up concepts for a golf game and the only "theme" there'd be is about how toon boys are fucking hot

The fickle nature of normalfag morality and its compete dependance on status quo.
At the end of his journey my protagonist, in a moment of subversion, refuses to change solely to appease the masses (something that was set up to be his goal up until this point) and realises that trying to please those with no real values of their own is pointless, which brings him a degree of comfort.

Tactical fantasy RPG that uses 5 man parties that plays in the style of X-Com, but with a higher focus on vertically.
Basically attempt to make a Final Fantasy Tactics style game, but with actual RPG exploration involved (climb things, unlock doors, traps, etc), and you don't just jp from combat maps (so overworld travel, shops etc).
Nostalgia and general obsession with the past probably
Mending the "generational trauma" is up there with muh depression in terms of indie game themes.
Not really, if i make a indie game it will have the history complexity of dragon ball... so.... higher power good?
Fuck themes, fag shit. My theme would be fighting against the idea something needs a theme.
That a human society can be good.
It'd have a a well-organised, democratic, prosperous society that cares for its less fortunate, but only in the background. The game is set outside that society, and the player interracts with it through its expats, which are mostly idealists fighting abroad for some cause they consider noble, or thrillseekers who find their home too boring.
I also want to have space necromancers, but that's unrelated to any themes, I just really want to have skeleton soldiers in my game.
Extremely lewd megaman clone where the succubus protagonist fucks the bosses to steal their powers with more explicit scenes as a reward for no damage runs or using the weapon they're weak to.
Spirituality as a remedy to eternal recurrence.
Depression, of course!
But not just any depression. The Great Depression.
It's about two bros, a German who fled to America to escape the nazis and a Russian who fled to America to escape the soviets, hopping from job to job in New York City during the great depression while also having to stop an evil Canadian Mad Scientist Wizard from taking over New York with his goose powered magi-tech
The actual underlying themes are patriotism and blatent anti-canadian propaganda
How cynical and misanthropic views can be correct outlooks on life.
>feeling powerless in a society that doesn't care and feeling like the only methods that can cause real change are violent methods and the repercussions that actions caused by that mindset has
>feelings of being a failed father and reflecting/regretting what they could have done better to raise their child and vice versa, what a son could do to empathize more with their father despite the natural differences in outlook caused by age and life events
>recognizing that even when you are very flawed and far from perfect, it is the continual attempt to improve and change that defines who you are as a person
>connecting to others around you and trying to develop a sense of community and brotherhood in a setting where people tend to isolate and keep to themselves
>this one is gay but: even if you consider yourself worthless and incapable, it is still worth treading the path ahead of you because other people you care for believe that you are capable of it and it wouldn't be right to let them down and just not try at all
getting old and feeling left behind all alone while still in a child like mind reminiscing about the past. your friends not wanting to do things with you anymore due to this. overcoming the resulting sadness by growing up. it is relatable for some. on the other hand its also not good to be to strict with yourself. both examples stop living in a way. (flips over the paper) and furry sex and something about garden gnomes.
"all indie games are about depression" is just another way of saying that you only play shit. And that's liek... ok... but crying about it is no.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1353230/Bomb_Rush_Cyberfunk/
and
Everything else on that list is out and confirmed good.
>Worlds
Please, don't show this gem to 4ch retards
Hey anons what indie games have you been playing recently and do you enjoy them?
I've been playing Summum Aeterna, a 2d hack n slash roguelite in the same universe as Aeterna Noctis. It's still in early access but supposedly should be released soon.
I'm honestly amazed, the combat was the part I hated the most in Noctis and they really stepped it up here, it's far more fluid and fun and less of a visual clusterfuck like the mothership areas.
I've yet to play it but Clash Artifacts of Chaos looks pretty fucking cool. It's supposed to be set in the same universe as Xeno Clash 1 and 2 but this one's a third person brawler with stances and whatnot. It also supposedly has co-op so I can't wait to love the shit out of it and then fail to convince any of my gay friends to play it coop with me.
>Patrick's Parabox
You are my moron. Such a fun game.
Im veru drunk i hate my lofreeerr
Make a quirky indie game about it
I'm more partial to melancholy anyway. Few people understand the subtle differences.
>oh so deep indie
>it's actually just terrible YA shit written by middle-aged wannabe californians
I fucking hate what happened to the RPGMaker scene after the 2000s and the To The Moon shysters got ahold of it.
>to the moon shysters
qrd?
nothing, it's just a shit "serious" game that got praised to hell and back by gamejournos and spawned endless copycats.
Millenial here.
I love RPG's, but only ones that have a max of 10 player levels, and progression is largely horizontal with some verticality sprinkled on.
I once thought about making a game that wasn't going to be a metaphor or allegory for depression, it was going to simulate what it was like. It would be a normal game, like a platformer or puzzle game or something, but then randomly the colors would fade out and the game would either intentionally run at a very low framerate or run in slow motion. And sometimes, it would just crash to desktop and you wouldn't be able to launch the game again for an indeterminate period of time. Occasionally, you'd get pop-up windows, like the ads we used to get in the early 2000s, but the more you closed the windows, the more windows that would pop up. And they'd pop up faster and faster until the game crashed.
I never bothered doing anything with that, because obviously, it's a stupid fucking idea.
Are these threads automated?
Upvote! c:
Because zoomers and trannies need constant validation of their feelings, even in their virtual toys
people meme about this all the time, but any horrorfag here knows how true this is to horror. not only to games but every media related to horror always end up with the monster being a metaphor for abuse or some shit
Do you get off to making the same thread multiple times a day with a different gif to evade filters.
I've been working on an indie game for a very long time and it's indeed a grueling experience. And that's just part-time.
Maybe working full time on it is better? Since perhaps you have time for a life. Wouldn't know.
>Me showing op that depression isn't an emotion
good
Me teaching Tyrone he can fuck my wife because I'm obviously a white man
>Why are indie games so unoriginal?
Because 99% of indie devs see themselves as "auteur". They think that they can do artshit with video games.
Depression isn't an emotion. You retard. You're looking for "sadness"
Oh man, either way I have manic sadness. It's been hitting me back and forth like a boxer all week. My grandma made me cancel my rpg night with my group this weekend and I feel worse now.
>Here's your indie protagonist bro
As long as they're white, I don't mind
People in general are unoriginal
>2 seconds in google
>hindi
also, Fran Bow and Stardew Valley aren't about depression
Neither is Hellblade, and I'm pretty sure Firewatch
depression is not an emotion it's a disease
afaik
Cos it's too hard to make something wildly original, most just wanna, like, mage game.
In the future, almost now, indie games will be even more original when we can perfectly describe them to an AI... The reason you see all those depression game is because of artcel. AI art will make everything good
piss weak b8 m8
Tick tock artcel, AI pixel art looks better than what you posted
now make the pixel art animated scenes
then I will buy your game
ai will empower people who are proficient at networking (so, lefty cattle) at best or put the media bubbles problem into an unimaginable overdrive at worst
everyone excited for it is shortsighted
Don't bother trying to explain basic shit like that to him. He thinks left wing artists are the reason why games suck and not the people who hired those left wing artists, the same people who will be making the most use of the AI
>No, it's not the thief's fault, it's society's fault for making him to steal from others
No, chud. You're the reason why games suck.
>wealthy leftists specifically hiring people on the basis of politics rather than talent has nothing to do with the drop in quality vidya
incoherent, try again
>In the future, almost now, indie games will be even more original when we can perfectly describe them to an AI
Your hands and dick should be mangled in a blender.
all those earthbound-inspired games about depression are masterpieces btw
Using reductionist language to trivialise good games is... le good!
My experience is that there are a few real gems to be found, but most have an interesting idea that a mediocre game is built around. Whether it's a story idea or a pretty interesting gameplay mechanic, most indie developers don't know how to craft a full game around it. After a while the game gets stale as a result. Then you add in the fact most don't have great graphics or sound and I don't find them very enjoyable.
Midwits make midwit indie games popular. Omori and Undertale are prime examples of this.
>depression
>emotion
Depression is a lack of emotion. I hate all the attentionwhoring women and feminine men that turned a mental sickness into another pretentious homogay buzzword.
Back when I was a kid I played this game on Newgrounds called Every Day the Same Dream. It was this artsy game with minimalistic graphics, slow gameplay and a story about the evils of capitalism and how much it sucks to be a salaryman blah blah blah. Even when I was young I couldn't help but think how pretentious and stuck up its own ass the whole experience was, even if I didn't know to phrase it like that. It wasn't the only artsy game on Newgrounds by a long shot, but it was the shittiest one I tried by far so it always kinda stuck with me.
Years later when I got into indie game development I suggested a game idea to a friend of mine, who makes games sometimes, as a joke. He absolutely loved the concept though so we actually ended up making it. Only shortly before release did I realize that I pretty much stole the concept from Every Day the Same Dream - a depressed salaryman goes to work for a few days, realizes his life is shit and kills himself. The biggest difference is that instead of being gloomy and artsy, it's silly and gamey and plays the whole thing for laughs. It made me wonder why indie devs don't try to do that. I think it'd be a breath of fresh air if they simply played around with people's expectations more. Not like there's a huge financial risk considering how low budget most indie games are, anyway.
Thanks for reading my novel.
It's funny how even after 8 years (10 if you count the demo), Undertale keeps being the biggest filter of dumb morons trying to fit in way too hard
>GayFaGs tourists
>r/Ganker redditors
>election tourists
>wojakcancer
>falseflag discord trannies
>-oomer posters/Monster energy drink shills
>twitter morons
all instantly pop a blood vessel when they even hear of anything Undertale related.
Undertale is the great filter.
Can't believe so many dumb morons would get filtered by such a relatively simple game.
Indie games deserve infinitely more respect than the AAA industry at this point. Cry of Fear is easily one of my favorite games ever. What indies should I play that I dont know about? Its mostly horror games that interest me (and 3d games) but im not opposed to masterpieces in other genres like subnautica. Off the top of my head ive played the two mentioned above, Darkwood, Tormented Souls, Ghostrunner and Getting over it. Got super meatboy for free and left it unfinished on PS4 years ago as well and just started hotline miami yesterday since I own it and the sequel
>talking to that one female relative who has made depression her personality
hmmmmmm
As long as it doesn’t pander to trannies then it’s okay
Indie games are disappointing because on paper they seem like the perfect way to get games that have a strong artistic vision behind them, but they’re often really derivative and cover the same themes over and over. And then there’s ones that drift too far into being more of an art piece than a fun video game, like that one that takes months to beat where you play as a little black goblin thing. I think Japanese games still strike the best balance. Even when given creative freedom they tend to try and make an actual game that has the artsy parts woven into it.
