People who make games have no friends and don't go outside, so you can't expect much from them. The best kinds of video games are made by people who know how to appreciate the world around them

No good media has ever been created by a normie.

Not normalgays, just people with capacity for joy. People who are able to appreciate a beautiful sunset or a field of flowers. I'm mostly talking about something like Yoshi's Island or Katamari Damacy. Whimsical shit.

No. People misattribute it to him but most of it was written by others who also stole most of it from Runequest.

              I'm referring to this quote
              >[The look of the game] came from Michael Kirkbride, and I would say that it’s not just the visual aesthetic; all of the narrative aesthetic of Morrowind also comes from Michael. I might’ve been the narrative lead, but Michael was the luminary — the man with spectacularly exotic and bad judgment that excited us so much.

              ...

              >And he is a rare talent in that he’s a very good illustrator, not just in terms of making it readable, but making it mythically vibrant. He did the original map of Morrowind, which was the foundation of the different terrains and geographical experiences. He was absolutely essential. And also crazy as a rat in a drainpipe, which is necessary. Somebody had to be really, really, really crazy, and it’s better that your lead designer isn’t.
              -Ken Rolston

I probably misphrased since I didn't mean that he was the crux of the lore and look but like a muse for those things that other creatives filtered to make something unique and substantial

                Anonymous

And then you read Runequest and find 95% of the lore is just ripped off.

More important than go outside is to have at least some cultural background that goes beyond some trendy writer or Holywood. That is already too much to ask for most authors/devs.
Humanity has been writing about the issues that make us human for millennia, there is no shortage of ways to expand the view on these things, but the devs are stuck in this little world of theirs where everyone is considered mentally ill and is on medication.

      >Making games for a living is a very depressing experience.
      Not for me.
My job was 3 weeks in office and 1 week on construction site. The office parts were horrible, with the only positive being the espresso machine and some hot female employees who were good for the eyes. The construction site part was a little less bad for the intellect, but it was extremely tiring.
I dropped everything to work on my amateur erotic games thanks to the power of the dollar in my country. I don't even need to be successful to live well here, and now my life is simple and pleasant. Never again have I had to get up early to get on a dilapitaded train full of people who look like the missing link between man and monkey like I did before. I'm happy.

Probably, but I'm sometimes skeptical about this so called impossibility of having a cheap life in first world countries. I have this impression that an American can move to a small town where land is cheaper and live a simple life where he cooks his own food using natural and cheap ingredients that are probably abundantly available (if even in my shithole there is, I imagine that in the US where production and logistics are advanced it must be much better). Plus the guy won't have to worry about malaria, drug cartels and women with ulterior motives thinking he is rich just because he has white skin, so he should have a lot more opportunities to adopt a less expensive lifestyle and still have security and quality of life, plus access to the internet which is the only thing a developer needs besides a computer.
I know many devs complain but they live in expensive metropolises and spend in one espresso at some famous franchise what I spend in 2 months grinding my own coffee.

Nintendo usually copyright strikes smaller youtubes who show their games, taking all the revenue for the video unless you follow their rules. So you'll usually find channels that either exclusively cover Nintendo games (and shill whatever latest product Nintendo has released) or they cover everything but Nintendo games.

And when you are dealing with arcade ports or adaptations, there's a reasonable chance the console version is better, because it came later. Pocky and Rocky is a more sophisticated game than Kiki Kaikai, to name another example.

Some thoughts can’t be controlled, but it can be harmful to say that without including the context that any thought can be intentionally overridden or disregarded given enough time, practice, or external aid. Even if you are not responsible for your thoughts, you benefit from being responsible for how you respond to them.

          >Some thoughts can’t be controlled
No, no thought can be controlled. Because consciousness does not generate thought. Consciousness reads and interprets thoughts.
          >Even if you are not responsible for your thoughts, you benefit from being responsible for how you respond to them.
This is true, but depends entirely upon a person's access to regulatory methods like meditation. If someone never learns about meditation, they cannot benefit from it. Especially not if they are a person predisposed to being stubborn.

this is an idea perpetuated by people who want to sell you antidepressants

No, this is an idea perpetuated by monks who can enter deep states of meditation and doing so recognize that their thoughts are not generated by their will, and only by entering a certain state do thoughts stop.

I think these memes (16 bit games about depression/quirky earthbound inspired rpg, with any overlap they may have) only exists because of omori and celeste, which came out fairly recently and are very popular. That said, if you browse the steam reccomender you'd be surprised of how many unknown earthbound-inspired indie rpgs exist. Don't really know about the depression part.

        Anonymous

Neither of those games are even really about depression, though. Celeste is about anxiety attacks or transgenderism or whatever the frick, and Omori's about guilt.

              >is mostly about the responsibility that an immortal time traveling being would take on by merely existing

It's not, Undertale is basically a commentary on the conflict between player agency vs. developer intent in video games as well as immersion. Deltarune is kind of dealing with the same thing but it hasn't evolved yet; do you let yourself be taken in by the fun story Ralsei wants to tell you, or do you fight against the story?

              >It's not, Undertale is basically a commentary on the conflict between player agency vs. developer intent in video games as well as immersion.
On a meta level, yeah, but on a more in-universe level the question is ultimately about the responsibility someone with the kind of abilities a player would have might take on merely by having those abilities at all. Flowey abuses the frick out of that power because he's a sociopath, and the player/player character is chastised for doing the same.
Either way it's still not about depression.

The thing about Omori is that the content warning is kind of a bait and switch
You THINK that the person that died in the game suffered from anxiety and depression and killed themselves, but you later find out that she was mostly fine, and actually died from accidentally being killed by the main character which re-contextualizes his own depression and veers into being a game about dealing with massive guilt instead
So you see the content warning and go "oh okay it's obvious what's going to happen/has happened" then you get hit with what actually happened
not saying omori is a flawless game but it was definitely more impactful than a lot of generic indie depression simulators

My own game’s plot is a deliberate allegory for my own struggles with mental health, since part of the reason I started to work on the game in the first place was to give me something to do when I was in the midst of a complete mental breakdown, but it’s deliberatey written so the allegory isn’t really obvious unless you know how my own personal struggles relate to the game plot. Plus, it’s a gameplay focused game anyway, so alot of the plot isn’t forced on you.

It’s good writing advice to write what you know. In fact, I think a reason that a lot of games about depression don’t work is because the dev has never been depressed in their lives.

This new "common core" education has done nothing but emotionally and mentally stunt your entire generation and you're actually too stupid by design to understand. Same shit happened to kids who lived in the 1950s when they tried to do away with the concept of childhood entirely; You were just a "little person" who should be ashamed that you're not an adult yet and were treated as such. I want it done fricking WELL. Same with Indy games, I don't give a frick about "well you need to reinvent the wheel here dude", I'm coming to you for you to make a great fricking wheel.

I'm all for indy games because they're not dicking around trying to be Mr. Clever dick and figure out a new secret design that nobody's ever thought of before, I buy indie games because they have PASSION for those kinds of games and will generally make types of games that AAA devs have tossed to the wayside because they can't be infinitely monetized with microtransactions and other bullshit.

Because they are all from the same clique and most of them are mentally unstable leftists active in what's probably the most demand-driven (i.e. capitalist) economy possible (high-tech entertainment = no fun no buy).

Their problem with "gamer culture" is not that it's "toxic" but that people actually have very specific requirements about the products they get.

It isn't just some corner coffee shop where people will pick up stuff on their way to work. You actually have to lean heavily into marketing and make something that people actually go out of their way to purchase.

This is something a lot of them simply can't stomach. Especially the ones that sunk years into a hobby project just to realize they have to finish up something marketable.

Most of these homies don't even have an accountant.

That's because people who say this shit don't play games, and barely have an interest in games. They're addicted to heckling things on Ganker. You're talking to people whose conception of what an indie game is comes from memes about Phil Fish.

Most indie games are "game I played as a kid, but new" or "survival game made in unity", or in some cases "furry passion project", and the really good ones like Hollow Knight or Cuphead get some attention, while most slip by the wayside.

Personal journey stories that revolve around emotions like depression are easier and safer to write cause it's something that's universally relatable and already has set path the story will follow (depression -> overcoming depression).

Everyone can agree that depression = bad. Once you step outside of that safe zone all you can really write about are societal issues which are political and involve you needing to make a statement about society. Making that statement involves you setting up the premise, introducing the issue to the audience, making it relatable to people who may not be familiar with it and finally making a statement which not all the audience will agree with and also involves you actually needing to understand what is it you're trying to say because a political statement can be picked about more easily.

Because by making it about ham, you've already alienated Muslim players because they aren't allowed to eat pork. You're already excluding players from what's otherwise a hecking relatable story-driven indie title.

These games don't even properly delve into depression. Like you said most of them are just about "depression = bad." They don't delve into less comfortable territory about the nature of depression, what it drives people to do and whether people are responsible for doing those things or not, the less comfortable ways people learn to cope with depression, how society's view of depression can affect people, or even less comfortable aspects like asking if depression can be a force for good ultimately and the ramifications of accepting that if it's true.
Instead they're all just about one guy being depressed and then overcoming it. Rather than actually examining depression as a topic as something trying to be "artsy" should.

Getting that balls deep requires a real tight focused cast and narrative. 'Games' don't have time to do that because it's a fricking game.
They probably come off as half baked because that's just how the medium is.
Gameplay will only obfuscate and interrupt your narrative. Clear lines for 'pay attention im trying to tell you something deep' and 'lol get me the potion to open the door'
If im writing a story that really wants to examine character it would probably best to make a VN or CRPG.
Interactivity can absolutely be an aspect of this and many good narrative games make your choices matter somewhat, and the best can integrate its themes into your decisions.
But lets be honest that's not the cast most of the time. Even something hailed for it's storytelling like Red Dead 2 has Arthur behave like a psychomaniac during gameplay. Heckin dissonance is a meme if course, but it does take you out of the experience and if you take the story seriously you HAVE to divorce the gameplay from the narrative
VNs don't have that problem most of the time but too bad they're often just stupid writing with meme characters

If you want something raw, best stick to film and books I guess

          >Gameplay will only obfuscate and interrupt your narrative
It's harder to use gameplay for the narrative but that is not at all the case that it will interrupt or obfuscate it.
If you really want to tell a specific narrative you design the gameplay around it and use it to recreate the emotions of the characters in the player.
The issue is most games botch it because they don't know what they are designing for.

Ghost of Tsushima got close in regards to its treatment of honor in the narrative.
It created player expectations to go into the game playing as an honorable samurai and built the tools needed to facilitate a downfall to 'dishonorable' tactics.
But they failed to realize players would follow the main character's progression and try to ignore those tools to stay honorable while they could
The reason I give it as an example is that for me who played on lethal I felt the same progression the main character felt when he realized he wasn't strong enough to just fight honorably and needed other things as the difficulty mode kept me dying when I tried to play honorably and ended up resorting to the ghost tools.
I had an experience where the gameplay directly reinforced the narrative themes more strongly than the story could.

It was something that could have worked in theory for all players but instead, they relied on standard game traditions and missed the crucial point of turning players from wanna-be samurais to reluctant ninjas.

Of course, this particular topic isn't deep but it exemplifies that is very much is possible to not have the gameplay conflict with the core story and instead contribute to it in a way other mediums couldn't that can allow for deep exploration.

          Anonymous

          >player agency vs. developer intent
It's more about dissecting the inherent morality of the mentality of a videogame player. Frankly I always thought the themes of Undertale were pretty pretentious when held up to scrutiny, or at least were given too much weight by the fanbase as if "you kill in videogame" is meant to be some profound ontological statement that applies to real life. It really works better when you just take it as a one off experiment about what would happen if player actions had moral ripercussions.

To be fair, Toby seems to have realized this, because if you go back to talk to the goat kid after getting the pacifist ending you basically get a lecture that can be summed up as "most of this probably doesn't apply to real life moron".

            Anonymous

"Morality" has nothing to do with the story, the developer knows all these characters are fake there is no true value to their lives. If you embrace that and don't let yourself get invested then you're on the Genocide route and you become "soulless" because your heart isn't in the game. If you're on the Pacifist route then you surrender your player agency to the actual story that they want to tell to you, and thus your player character is given a name independent of (You)

It's about two bros, a German who fled to America to escape the nazis and a Russian who fled to America to escape the soviets, hopping from job to job in New York City during the great depression while also having to stop an evil Canadian Mad Scientist Wizard from taking over New York with his goose powered magi-tech
The actual underlying themes are patriotism and blatent anti-canadian propaganda

getting old and feeling left behind all alone while still in a child like mind reminiscing about the past. your friends not wanting to do things with you anymore due to this. overcoming the resulting sadness by growing up. it is relatable for some. on the other hand its also not good to be to strict with yourself. both examples stop living in a way. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1353230/Bomb_Rush_Cyberfunk/

Hey anons what indie games have you been playing recently and do you enjoy them?
I've been playing Summum Aeterna, a 2d hack n slash roguelite in the same universe as Aeterna Noctis. It's still in early access but supposedly should be released soon.
I'm honestly amazed, the combat was the part I hated the most in Noctis and they really stepped it up here, it's far more fluid and fun and less of a visual clusterfrick like the mothership areas.

I've yet to play it but Clash Artifacts of Chaos looks pretty fricking cool. It's supposed to be set in the same universe as Xeno Clash 1 and 2 but this one's a third person brawler with stances and whatnot. It also supposedly has co-op so I can't wait to love the shit out of it and then fail to convince any of my homosexual friends to play it coop with me.

I once thought about making a game that wasn't going to be a metaphor or allegory for depression, it was going to simulate what it was like. It would be a normal game, like a platformer or puzzle game or something, but then randomly the colors would fade out and the game would either intentionally run at a very low framerate or run in slow motion. And sometimes, it would just crash to desktop and you wouldn't be able to launch the game again for an indeterminate period of time. Occasionally, you'd get pop-up windows, like the ads we used to get in the early 2000s, but the more you closed the windows, the more windows that would pop up. And they'd pop up faster and faster until the game crashed.

I never bothered doing anything with that, because obviously, it's a stupid fricking idea.

My experience is that there are a few real gems to be found, but most have an interesting idea that a mediocre game is built around. Whether it's a story idea or a pretty interesting gameplay mechanic, most indie developers don't know how to craft a full game around it. After a while the game gets stale as a result. Then you add in the fact most don't have great graphics or sound and I don't find them very enjoyable.

Back when I was a kid I played this game on Newgrounds called Every Day the Same Dream. It was this artsy game with minimalistic graphics, slow gameplay and a story about the evils of capitalism and how much it sucks to be a salaryman blah blah blah. Even when I was young I couldn't help but think how pretentious and stuck up its own ass the whole experience was, even if I didn't know to phrase it like that. It wasn't the only artsy game on Newgrounds by a long shot, but it was the shittiest one I tried by far so it always kinda stuck with me.

Years later when I got into indie game development I suggested a game idea to a friend of mine, who makes games sometimes, as a joke. He absolutely loved the concept though so we actually ended up making it. Only shortly before release did I realize that I pretty much stole the concept from Every Day the Same Dream - a depressed salaryman goes to work for a few days, realizes his life is shit and kills himself. The biggest difference is that instead of being gloomy and artsy, it's silly and gamey and plays the whole thing for laughs. It made me wonder why indie devs don't try to do that. I think it'd be a breath of fresh air if they simply played around with people's expectations more. Not like there's a huge financial risk considering how low budget most indie games are, anyway.

    Thanks for reading my novel.

It's funny how even after 8 years (10 if you count the demo), Undertale keeps being the biggest filter of dumb Black folk trying to fit in way too hard

all instantly pop a blood vessel when they even hear of anything Undertale related.
    Undertale is the great filter.

Indie games deserve infinitely more respect than the AAA industry at this point. Cry of Fear is easily one of my favorite games ever. What indies should I play that I dont know about? Its mostly horror games that interest me (and 3d games) but im not opposed to masterpieces in other genres like subnautica. Off the top of my head ive played the two mentioned above, Darkwood, Tormented Souls, Ghostrunner and Getting over it. Got super meatboy for free and left it unfinished on PS4 years ago as well and just started hotline miami yesterday since I own it and the sequel

Indie games are disappointing because on paper they seem like the perfect way to get games that have a strong artistic vision behind them, but they’re often really derivative and cover the same themes over and over. And then there’s ones that drift too far into being more of an art piece than a fun video game, like that one that takes months to beat where you play as a little black goblin thing. I think Japanese games still strike the best balance. Even when given creative freedom they tend to try and make an actual game that has the artsy parts woven into it.
