2002 and 2022 are incomparable. Hell, the 90s feel like an alternate dimension by now. Once you gain another 10 years you will hopefully become aware of the world changing and twisting around you. Every good thing must be snuffed out, every pinch of innocence corrupted. Believe Nikola Tesla when he said that you will witness manmade horrors beyond your comprehension. Your only hope is to never give up on the last shreds of goodness and hopefully pass it on.

Bad writing is not new. What is new is how much emphasis is being placed on the writing in video games these days so how bad the writing is is becoming more and more obvious.

Although, there is the problem where millennials do seem to think being obnoxious and needlessly combative are admirable character traits. I can only assume it's because they themselves are obnoxious and needlessly combative and don't realize how unlikable that makes them.

GenX’s defining element of their existence was good vidya. Before them, the silent Gen invented them. Then Boomers did some hit and miss and created a niche nerd culture thing, then GenXers made video games into what we think of them and the AAA title, Halo 2, modern warfare, etc. Then Millennials have sunk it. Maybe zoomers will resurrect it. Obviously it’s more complicated than that with blackrock and everyone who’s in charge of society is trying their best to kill the culture and force it to hold status quo because if not it’ll turn into 24/7 Ye / Hitler Phonk edits and so on. But older millennials are too much like their parents, they’re train wreck of a generation. But older zoomers and young millennials largely have GenX parents so maybe we can replicate the magic, given the chance. Millennials are too interested in their own perception of how people see them and are rebelling constantly against a social order that has been nearly wiped out, thinking they’re sticking it to the man by going around “EXUSE ME SWEETY BUT WHAT THE FRICKING FRICK FRICK DO YOU FRICKING THINK YOU ARE FRICKING DOING???” Their constant absurd vulgarity shows a lot about them, there’s something so offensive when weak men and women curse and are vulgar, turns my stomach the same way seeing two gay homies kissing or maggots on a corpse.

homie, these are all Gen Xers picrel is one of them. They are trying to write a caricutre of an early 2010s Millennial but doing it sincerely. Reminder that out of touch Gen Xers are the ones who are rebooting, woking and shitting up franchises like Star Wars. Stuff that Boomers created.

Because they are positively reinforced for creating products for mass consumption. It's not a generational issue it's a normie issue. You can't fix the forces that keep rewarding James Cameron. The masses are incapable of manifesting transcendent art. Same shit applies to the broken system that is democracy. The only recipe for excellence are visionaries not sycophants or cultural climbers.

Rick and Morty and social media as a whole has really destroyed comedy.

          Anonymous

No, Joss Whedon destroyed comedy. It was relegated to either garbage LIKE Rick and Morty/Family guy, or quirky, quippy, sarcastic heroes raising their eyebrows and smirking in life-threatening situations. Pure comedy, classic comedy, is dead.

            Anonymous

Whedon was case zero, but the problem goes further than that; the issue is that people aped him without having the required wranglers that stop the writing from constantly murdering the tone.
There’s a reason why Buffy, on discovering her mother’s corpse, is clearly shattered rather than saying some inane shit like
            >well I guess she’s been stiffed this time!
And that reason is the five other people with veto power reeling him in before he had the chance.

I really feel that's just Justin Roiland and his teams specific type of humor much in the same way Family Guy/American Dad is mostly just Seth McFarlane's brand of humor. Don't just lump all millennials in one group because a thing got popular. Big Bang Theory was a successful sitcom and I've literally never heard anyone but boomers like it despite it definitely aimed towards younger audiences.

Gen x is by far the smallest generation numbers wise...even less than boomers. They were the first generation where a good portion of them were born unplanned due to the sexual revolution. Numbers wise, gen x pales in comparison to boomers, milennials, and zoomers.

There’s some kind of weird dividing line with GenXers. Maybe they’re when the culture officially began to shatter into a ton of subcultures, but all the GenXers are all either pretty good and reasonable or they’re just boomers who turn everything they touch to shit. Boomers are all carbon copies of each other, millennials are largely the same until you get into the younger ones, then zoomers are mostly unpredictable. maybe the distinction is in who raised them, some GenXers have boomer parents but most have Silent Gen ones. Some of the last normal people I know in life are GenXers and young millennials / zoomers. That line of totally zogged up people are total disasters. The Goyest Gen had the boomers, boomers had millennials, and millennials had late zoomers and are having Gen Alphas, but the zoomers with millennial parents are horrible. The best people I know are Silent Gen, GenX, and young millennial and older zoomers

Gen Xers are the ones who are mass producing all the 80s nostalgia slop like Wonder Woman 84 and the wokefied Star Wars sequels. Gen X creatives for the last decade are primarily known for taking stuff from their childhood that was created by Boomers and older and completely detroying it. Reminder that picrel is a Gen Xer reacting to slop made by Gen Xers.

The suits, CEOs, politicians etc who have been pushing for diversity and pozzing everything aren't Millennials, they are by far mostly Gen X. Gen X is also the first generation of parents to enmass mutilate their kids into trannies.

Gen x is by far the smallest generation numbers wise...even less than boomers. They were the first generation where a good portion of them were born unplanned due to the sexual revolution. Numbers wise, gen x pales in comparison to boomers, milennials, and zoomers.

There are 66 million Gen Xers compared to 70 million Boomers.

        https://www.statista.com/statistics/797321/us-population-by-generation/

Relatively, that difference is almost nothing. What your comment is regurgitaring is the common Gen X excuse to weasel out of the blame of what they've been doing for over a decade now. Listening to them, you'd think Gen X is some super secret club of a few chosen ones. In reality, they are a normal sized generation who have been at the forefront of pozzing up society for over a decade now and they will only get more powerful in future.

But I guess we're supposed to not pay attention to that because Gen X are so grunge and rebelious and would never do that

Look up the writers for Forspoken. Every one of them looks like a liberal or a queer or british (redundant). That's the very obvious dividing line. It always has been, really, but it's only recently that liberal ideology has been twisted and subverted into a mockery of itself and been turned against western civilization and "whiteness" in general. And now they have no conservative shareholders or CEOs to tard wrangle them because all the original founders are retiring and everything is owned by israeliteRock now anyway.

Not to mention out of touch Japanese heads of Square probably made some obscure demands. Big producers like Square don't just let creative teams off the leash, it's all focus groups and trends mashed into what they hope is a perfect storm of ideas. >Why are millennials such terrible writers?

For the majority of millennial writers, most likely the only media they consume is other video games, anime and Hollywood movies and they have no real hobbies other than consuming cheap content and no work experience outside the mainstream media industry.

In order to become a good writer you need actual life experience and read lots books. The average book, doesn't even need to be a masterpiece, still has a more detailed and well structured story than even the best video games, anime or movies.

The fun part is that the all publicity is good publicity meme clearly isn't working anymore, people will only consume trashy modern shit if they don't have to pay for it (youtube, tiktok, music streaming in general), the second it becomes a business where you actively have to put your own money instead of your time nobody buys this crap and the lack of interest from a maintream audience is so blatant that is beyond me how in the world games like Callisto protocol had a budget of 100mil and that couldn't possibly be less reflected in the final product or in its marketing campaign that obviously failed.

Apparantly this hyperproduced crap is also meant to be taken seriously, like the woman that with no irony assumed that putting some black chick on the cover of an EA game was this act of rebellion, these people who work for the most mainstream shit imaginable actually see themselves as some kind of auteurs and they will never get how all their work is just the butt of a unsuccesful corporate joke

    >Why are millennials such terrible writers?

I don't know but they really are. I've been irritated by this since Mass Effect. The writers for ME1 and 2 were GenX. The writers for ME3 was nearly all GenX with only a couple of millennials. ME1 and 2 had such profoundly sober characters. These were serious and mature characters. You could feel the weight of these characters lives in the dialog. You could sense the difficult times these characters lived through as well as the scars from the struggle to make it through those tough times. This was great writing, just great. ME3 still had some of that writing but there didn't seem to be a need or a willingness to deliver more character development.

ME4 Andromeda was all millennial writers. The characters in ME4 are as if written by low-IQ high school girls who come from wealthy families and had everything handed to them and never faced any adversity in their lives ever. The characters in ME4 are such shallow, vapid, juvenile dingbats and the dialogue is so amateur and unimaginative. Millennial women are just as bad as millennial men.

Yes. I reiterate: the actual plot is formulaic and predictable. Cuff being the big bad was clear from the very first conversation you have with him about the Tantas turning him into a cuff.

Most modern writers don't set out to make great stories, they endeavor to find ways to affirm themselves, to build a monument to their own "enlightened" ideals and insights.

    >Sincerity is old hat, therefore everyone is irreverent and sarcastic
    >Characters are not people, simply vessels for specific ideas or archetypes
    >Societal related "issues" are shoehorned in not because the writer wants to bring change, but so they can communicate that they like the idea of bringing change, which secures them a favorable impression among certain social groups
    >Creative decisions like making the protagonist black are calculated, and not arrived at organically

These kind of writers don't care about writing a good story, they care about about constructing showcases for their wit and ideals.

I'd say it's women (and less capable minorities) hitting critical mass. For the past few decades new writers have been less competent and often genuinely stupid and tasteless, but the older generation were still active and able to apply some standard of taste and good execution.

Millennial and younger writers are also very unlikely to consume literature from earlier than 1990 or so, and the dominance of multicultural thinking leaves them without depth of knowledge in any culture at all.

I disagree with baldur's gate having a shit story, but it is very true that the story doesn't particularly matter if your gameplay is fun and you have attractive characters. I would prefer a game to have all three, but I ugly people--physically and ideologically-- injected in the game is probably the only actual deal breaker. most people play video games to escape a real world full of ugly women, minorities and fringelibs. we don't want to see them in games as well, and we aren't going to buy games with them in it.

I think it's more the gameplay's fault than the writers.
In a movie bullshit lines like "OH DID I JUST DO THAT" have a purpose, and while not exactly shakespeare you can get away with funny quips.

In a game the player has agency. So if the gameplay doesn't reflect the dialogue, it's an immediate disassociation and break in immersion.
Like you don't celebrate after pressing the signal button and crossing an empty street. What does get your heart pumping is crossing a 4 lane highway with hundreds of cars going 120mph.
So ideally you wouldn't even need dialogue like this. Ideally the player themselves would say "holy fricking shit that was awesome".

But that requires competent game devs. It requires thinking about level design and that "HL2 bridge feeling".

The ones who would become writers grew up in a time where everything Is a story but nothing are experiences.
They grew up in a time of mutually assured destruction, so no big wars, no actual danger to them, and no understanding of the concept. Everything has been safeguarded for them better than any generation before. This effects genZ just as much if not more.
Most conflicts lose their nuance and become character slates for the fanfiction writers

    >instead of 2 people from families of decades old war and conflict with eachother coming together amidst the families best wishes because of the strength of their love.
    It ends up being
    >2 people get together but the parents don't like it but they also seem to be ok with it at the end because they have been "changed"

Or it's like with conflict where
    >Britain decides to join the war to protect Belgium from Germany causing 40,000 more men to die, because pride (does our word mean nothing), fear (if we don't uphold our treaty, then nobody will take up seriously in the future), and self interest (if we win it will put us st the very top of the world stage)
    Instead it ends up being
    >we went to war to protect Belgium from the evil Germans because it's the right thing to do

Tldr. Almost all writers know stories, but don't understand the concept that causes it.
