Why are Devs scared of skeumorphic UIs? The answer is the same, minimalist garbage is easier to read and make.

      Anonymous

The answer is not the same. Skeumorphism relies on association with real world objects or actions. If this association fails because there is no real world representation or the end user does not know what the ui element represents, skeumorphism becomes a deterrence to user experience.

themed UIs require high resolution textures that can be read and scaled at different resolutions like 4K
material minimalist design is easier to scale

if they had good UI/UX designers we could still get good themed designs but you know how it is

      Anonymous

To be fair its only been 2 years since the Euro was adopted in spain apparently. By then Salazar already had his hooks in the place. Also I dont know how you Euros handle a currency shift but I assume theres a period of time where both are legal currency but all given money is in Euros before eventually the old currency is no longer accepted. Actually who prints the Euros and is in control of amount in circulation and what not? I guess I should do some reading.

        Anonymous

Well the shift was pretty quick even though it was voluntarily (but not really because the central bank changed to euro and it was clear that this will be the new currency). I mean, theoretically it wouldn’t have worked if in a country all people and stores didn’t change it themselves but there was just no reason for it.
So what I mean is that there was no cutoff point where the currency wasn’t valid anymore. In Germany for example there are still some stores that accept the old mark and some 12 billion euro worth of mark are still in circulation in Germany’s economy.
But practically most places to pay at wouldn’t accept the mark really quickly because it was just so easy and quick to exchange it to euro at the local bank. I’m talking like two months afterwards basically everyone, who didn’t live under a rock, had their cash in euro instead.

Btw the european central bank and the various national banks print the euro

          Anonymous

So my couple of envelopes with a few hundred francs and marks are still legal tender? Neat. So what happens if a nation decides to do a "little" printing to save their economy? Can a nation like italy just turn on the brr machines or does the EU central bank tell them no even if it would frickin kill that nations economy?

            Anonymous

Well it’s not that easy and I’m no expert on it but I can tell you that all the nations banks work pretty closely together within the eurozone under the central bank in frankfurt.
And since their economies are tied to the euro they can’t really fail that hard since the entire eurozone will take the hit and spread it out over the entire zone. Which is obviously an argument against the euro by countries with a strong economy and an argument for the euro by countries with a weaker economy. Famously greece was saved by the strong economies of Western Europe, otherwise things would’ve been much worse. Though that can also be seen as a negative example from for example Germany’s perspective as they sort of "dumped" billions upon billions into greece without really getting anything ever back but it was deemed necessary for european stability, cohesion and greece being the cradle for western civilization and democracy etc. (even though modern and ancient greece are completely different but whatever).
Anyway, so since the EU is nothing by itself but the collaboration of its members, saving an economy, especially one as important as italy, would be in the interest of the EU as well. Ideally of course they pursue economic strategies that would prevent a depression in the first place but if it came to that they would find some way to alleviate the recession with the economic power of the entire EU to lessen the effects. Of course an economic downturn in one country would affect all in the EU, even something as comparatively minuscule as greeces economy wasn’t just nothing.
And yeah, the marks officially still exists, but is de facto out of service almost anywhere. It’d be hard to find a place to pay with it but it would theoretically be possible. But you could still to this day just walk to any german bank and exchange your mark for euro if you wanted.

    >Why are modern devs scared of themed UIs?
    1) There's the issue of portability. Yeah, old game UIs were intricate and had soul, but they were typically designed around low-res 4:3 monitors and often end up looking blurry and stretched on modern monitors. Nowadays even console games need to take into account that UIs should be legible for both 1080p and 4K, which you can't just do using the old method of 2D textures because of the following.

    2) There's the issue of performance. As display resolutions get higher, 2D textures for the UI get exponentially larger and relatively more expensive to load into memory/render on screen than it was the average 00's game texture running on average 00s hardware, especially now that 2D textures must take 4K into account. Considering this, it's more performant and portable to use vector graphics for UI design (since vector graphics are essentially math equations that calculate shapes and colors rather than a huge list of pixel colors like most traditional image formats are), but one drawback of vector graphics is that they perform worse the more complex the shapes they have to render are.

    3) The fact remains that modern UIs do have a better user experience in terms of responsiveness, navigability and readability compared to your average stylized UI. Yeah, it's all "best practices", but those "best practices" are there for a reason. Take the OP's screenshot for example, in the original RE4 menu all the upper tabs are spread evenly across the top while the inventory itself (the main attraction) is 70% on the left and its description is all the way on the bottom. Your eyes have to move all over the place to get all information, and it's very intuitive. In the modern menu, every relevant element is aligned to the center and easily caught in one up-down motion. Tabs are compressed into intuitively understandable icons you can all see at once rather than labels that are spread across the entire width of the screen.

      >TL;DR: Portability, budget and better user experience
No offense but this is all bullshit. You can still have UI that scale up well, most AAA games spend their budget on meaningless shit, and only morons get filtered about UI. Look at pic related, it's still has a modern UI design in some ways but at least it's thematically appropriate to the game. If some kickstarter indieshit can do it, then all these AAA trash have no excuse.

      Anonymous

1 and 2 can both be solved somewhat with the same vectorized fonts we use all the time and don't explain why every UI is now in the starkest angular white typeface with zero theming or personality.

3 is a symptom of this absolute "accessibility" cancer that teaches that games must have absolutely zero friction at all times because, like

A lot of it also has to do with the fact that games aren't escapist anymore. They're something of a chore to grind through and exist largely for you to stream or play while you're on Discord.

says, you're just supposed to passively thumb through the game while you stream or watch YouTube or whatever.

I want my map to look like a map. I want my inventory space to look cluttered. I want there to be friction in the menu to emphasize the more important points of gameplay. I don't want something I'm doing for fun to be hyper optimized to the point that it's indistinguishable from productivity software.

Isn't that from a cutscene that was prerendered though...? Rendered cutscenes are gonna have 0 impact on performance of a game. Go back as far as warcraft 3 cutscenes and you'll see games always had pretty solid pre-rendered cutscenes that didn't take away from development of other features since its a totally different department that handles that.

funny you should say that, I had a video recommended to me on youtube about modern UIs and the guy was shitting on them for being side scrolly UIs (i think these are called linear lists?), not presenting enough information, taking longer than needed to find what you're looking for etc

he also shits on them for being soulless and not gelling with the themes of the games

It's a minor thing, but it's really a shame. Modern in-game inventory UIs, title screens, menus, etc all look sterile and soulless. Sure, thematically it made sense that the UI was based on their futuristic corporate memory machine thing. But the end result was still that you had a bland sterile UI in games taking place in historical themed settings. And I think this helped pave the way for an increase in boring UIs that didn't mesh with their games' settings.

They haven't shown or mentioned a laser as far as I'm aware. The thing with the RE4 UI is that even though they were clearly menus, they felt interactive and physical, and that extended to the laser. It really sucks they dropped it.

As for RE2/3, not to my knowledge, and certainly nothing that changes the actual in-game aiming display. I think some guns have red dot sights but that just increases the gun's stats, it doesn't change anything about how you aim.
